As a retired steam floor cleaner of 25 years, I strongly disagree that this carpet was cleaned in a way that reflects what the cost was. Potential customers who are researching what service to use for cleaning their floors; PAY ATTENTION. TLDR: VLM is not as good as steam cleaning and you need to ask certain questions about the cleaning method when you call to book the service. This channel is, after all, marketing for the cleaning company so I doubt they’ll leave my comment up - but I would prefer they reply instead and we can debate via the comments section. I think that would be better for your business - showing potential customers that you back your services and you can explain your justification. I am going to be as nice as I possibly can with this comment, and it may have more words than people are willing to read, but here we go. This is the truth: this video is a perfect illustration of why you customers looking to have your floors cleaned are being scammed by companies nationwide. To the untrained eye, this video depicts a job well done, and the reaction from viewers in the comments reflects that as well. VLM is absolutely a valid cleaning method, and in this video, the tech is doing the cleaning correctly in a way the industry would give a thumbs up. Fine, no issues there. I'm sure this company and this tech are not bad people trying to scam anyone. The problem is that for $300 this carpet should have been cleaned using hot water extraction from a company that uses a truck-mounted machine. I’m quite certain there is a hot water extraction service in the area of this business that would have been willing to do that job for $300 or less. So let’s not say availability is an issue. Never once in this video does the tech take a white terrycloth towel and "test" the soil removal of what he's doing. The closest we get of that is him flipping the bonnet at 11:35 which proves that he's getting soil out of the carpet, but it doesn't indicate how much of the soil he’s removing. We can not tell if he’s removed 100% or 5% of the removable soil. Any time I’m cleaning and there is a customer standing nearby, I ask them to come over and check this out. I take a small white towel and rub it against the carpet that I just cleaned. I show the customer what it looks like. Then I rub an area that has been pre-sprayed, but not cleaned yet. I show them the difference. They say “HOLY SHIT”. And I say, “that’s what you are paying for today. I am physically removing the soil from this floor and driving away with it in my truck.” This really is as simple as what you see is what you get. Now, in the video he decides VLM is the proper method of cleaning to use for this job. Why? Because it’s commercial glue down carpet without a pad, unlike residential carpet. Great, that’s actually an appropriate observation. Now, does that mean steam cleaning (hot water extraction) is not appropriate for this carpet? No, not at all. Both methods of cleaning are considered proper for this type of carpet, however, one method is FAR superior to the other - and for VLM to match steam cleaning it would require 10 bonnets and about 10x more time than this tech spent there. So, one might assume that if he chose to clean the floor with an inferior cleaning method that he should charge less than what a steam cleaning would cost. Nope, again that’s not the case. To be frank, we charge the customer based on the time and cost of performing the service. I think he charged a reasonable fee for the time, labor, and chemicals he used. The fee is never based on the results of the cleaning. In other words, if a company spends 2 hours at your house and properly goes through all the cleaning steps, but your floor still looks like shit at the end, you still have to pay them in full. It’s your floor, it’s your risk, it’s your problem, and just because you hired an expert to do the job, it doesn’t magically transfer the responsibility to the company. The company is merely an extension of you doing it yourself. Now, if the tech in this video actually did tests of the areas before and after, and changed the bonnet a dozen times then I would say he is removing quite a bit of soil, maybe even as much as a steam cleaner. But you see him go over it and he couldn’t care less about how much soil is coming up. It “looks better” is not a valid way of determining the effectiveness of your cleaning. So now, the tech in this video is not cheating anyone. So why did I mention the word scam earlier? Well, like I said, I cleaned for MANY moons. Advertising to get more customers starting around 2006 has become entirely internet based, with maybe flyers, brochures, newspaper ads done very seldom. If you look for floor cleaning in your area right now using Google, you’ll notice the “action chem dry” or the “oxy cleaner” professional floor care experts at the top of every search, every paid ad, every facebook promoted post, etc. You’ll see the oxy clean guy with 500 5-star reviews. THIS IS ALL A SCAM. Those reviews are NOT from customers in your area. The information on their sites usually promote “green cleaning” and “dry cleaning” and might even show fake articles about the “bad side of steam cleaning” such as the myth that steam cleaning will ruin the glue under your carpet. VLM is a method meant to be used on the 3rd floor of a building where hoses and tools are difficult to get to, making it harder to use a truckmount to steam clean it. I’m certain the carpets in this video are still pretty dirty. Did he get some dirt out? Yes he did. Compared to a proper steam cleaning, though, he maybe did 10% as good of a job AT BEST. So you future customers, when you search for a floor cleaner in your area, skip the “oxy, dry-chem” scams and look for your local steam cleaner. When you call them, say “do you use a truckmounted machine? Do you use steam cleaning or hot water extraction as opposed to spinning bonnet cleaning?” If they say no, we only use a spinning floor tool with a bonnet - hang up and try the next one. If you have no way of getting a steam cleaner, then offer to pay much less than what they quote. If they say no, rent a floor cleaner machine from walmart and pay a high school kid to do the place for $100. It will come out better than this shit. Knowledge is power.

Hello, I just wanted to say I was really interested in everything you stated here and was wondering if there was a way I can contact you and maybe gleam maybe some useful information. I'm starting up my own carpet cleaning business and would really appreciate any tips or advice you may have to give. I've been enjoying a variety of videos, but it does help getting some direct feedback. Thank you!

You said a bunch of nothing. If you were a travel agency and you sold vacations to the Bahamas. You don't tell them about all the details of the airplane or the security process or the airport. You focus on the Bahamas and the end result. The end result is that the carpet is better than what it previously was before. Otherwise, everyone can clean their own carpets. People don't want to know? Because they rather pay someone else to do it. Just as you would for your car cleaning.
