Not sure if I missed him saying it but also make sure to wrap your line in a figure of 8 around the wrapping sticks, I learned the hard way years ago just wrapping around the outsides resulted in me cutting off half my line

Why can’t u just measure wraps from the end of the rod to the reel?

Because different rods will have different reel positions however a 12ft rod is 12ft., and conveniently 4 yards.
