CARPology's Joe Wooltorton meets up with Shimano's Ian Smith and Mike Dagnall to put their new reels to the test and find out if oscillation and line diameter really make a difference to distance.

Terry Edmonds longest cast is with a standard old style Windcast at 254 yards. This is a man that has been sponsored for years by Shimano. You would think that if slow oscillation is so good he would have broken his record. Big Danny Moeskopps holds several world records using a standard Daiwa 6000t reel. A reel that is nearly 40 years old in design. The taper of a spool is much more important.

Seen some good casting vids with Terry Edmonds, Mark Hutchinson and Mark Bartlett and one thing that all 3 say is to cast a long way the most important things are technique then the right rod (not necessarily an expensive one but one that you can compress properly) and then the reel. I can do around 160 yards on a good day with a freespirt ctx su 3.5tc rod and a daiwa crosscast reel.

My only gripe with Shimano is the line clips are crap.

How is this a fair test when you're casting in different directions. Change in direction changes the conditions- not least influence of wind and elevation. I'm expecting you guys can cast accurately to a marker, so why splay the casts in a 30degree or so radius? And from opposite directions?? Also is the spool of a similar size? Is the spool lip of the same angle/material? Thanks for sharing your findings, I assume you got the results you were aiming to show - but to those of us that have ever really done any kind of 'scientific tests' your conclusion is a summing up opinion so is simply unreliable due to your inclusion of error in test design. I would posit that the change in direction of line leaving the spool- from line uncoiling into the cast from bottom to top, and top to bottom of the spool itself creates a change in tension on the 'flying' line. More frequent tension changes introduce both slack and drag, slack and drag etc - it seems only congruent to reason that fewer direction changes may minimise disruption to flying line forces. Sure, many anglers wouldn't notice a spelling mistake in the angling times and as such would merely value your opinion on cast per oscillation rate as being better-or-worse....but to be frank your poor test design, and hence poor display of results to visual comparison - actually gives the watcher nothing more than the impression that they can ''go longer with good line-lay, than with poorer line-lay''...yet doesn't actually Evidence this under similar conditions. You guys may be very adept anglers, but you're going to need a better 'science guy' to call your test 'scientific'. Otherwise it's a good video

I'm a big Shimano fan but feel this only proves that super slow oscillation Shimano reels cast further than slow oscillation Shimano reels. As there were no figures for the casts it pretty much makes the whole thing irrelevant as we may be talking a couple of metres. Since there is a huge difference in cost I am surprised Shimano did not reveal the difference to boost sales of the much more expensive reel. Maybe there wasn't a lot of difference which is why they would not like to publicise it, who knows? To be really relevant the reels should have been compared against Basia's, and other big pit reels using the same rods, lines, caster etc and giving the distances so the test would actually give real info. This is nearly as bad as that video with Lee Jackson testing test curves on a rod, search for "Rod Test Curves - Bivvy.TV", for being a major opportunity to provide viewers with something useful but was made to be useless.

I'm pushing 200m with a 200 pounds setup :)).....feeder and big pit :)) But then I've bought this year the Ultegra XTD, so i'm in their camp. I still think that technique will get you farther than just whacking it with the best gear :)).

Loads of fisheries insist on using 15lb line or higher Bs.What about fast taper rods will get you further than semi or parabolic taper using slow osillation .

Terry Edmonds claims his longest cast was with a much cheaper reel

He also says he prefers faster oscillating reels with braid for big chucks rather than slower oscillation models which is better for mono.

If Terry says it, it’s gospel. I’d love to do a tuition day with him. My mate had one, put 40 yard on with his 13ft horizon set up.

Could of used a diawa 27 turns to the mags 50 then that would of given a true answer.

This doesn’t prove anything. Both these guys work for shimano lol. And shimano have been claiming that all the Tx range of rods can achieve distances of 200 yards, including the tx 2 that now costs £60 lol. This test needs to be done with various rods that costs £50 upwards reels without slow oscillation. And then compare the distances with a shimano rod that costs £600 and the reel that costs £700. Also ,£700 Daiwa reels don’t have slow oscillation, and some people swear by them for long distance. Also Terry Edmonds says that he can chuck 200 yards with reels that cost less than £100. Carpology need to do the test themselves without sponsors from these Brands involved. And then we will finally get the truth 🙄

it is very scientific in proving how far these guys will go to hype overpriced shimano reels though

Matthew Harris your comment has now 1 year daiwa changed and have now some reels already with slow oscillation “kind of “ in on all type of reels shimano is the only since they’re very beginning with the interest of oscillation and daiwa with long casts so now shimano copy daiwa with conic spools and daiwa copy shimano with slow oscillation But one question , is this issue really matter for normal people like us that are going fishing 10 times in 6 months ? Naaaaaaaa Hahahah

Strange how an xtd is only 15 yards or so less yet it can be bought for around £100 and the tech mgs is rrp 699.99 worth the extra money.Terry Edmonds puts a lead alot further with reels without slow oscillation.

Tony Bradbury they will drop in price quite dramatically unlike basias. Last gen mgs retailed for close to a grand i paid 370. Mgs just means lightweight top end they've got to have something to match the basia and in my opinion Shimano are rock solid.

Alex brooks shimano are not what they used to be imo.I used to only buy shimano reels but not anymore.Clickers breaking line guards snapping are just two of the problems i know mates have had.The new mgs are very nice but at least put a nice handle on them not the same as used on cheaper reels
