@johncochran8497
@johncochran8497 8 жыл бұрын
Nope. A missing fuse is pretty obvious and generally there's more than a few "non-critical" fuses in the fusebox that are the same size or larger than the "critical" fuses. So if you see the fuel pump fuse slot is empty, pull the fuse for the radio or some other non-critical circuit and plug it into the fuel pump slot. And you're now ready to go. But to be honest, his method is rather silly and unlikely to be used since how many people do you know of who would be willing to open the hood and fuse box each time they park? Much easier is to conceal a switch inside the cabin that would disconnect power to the fuel pump.

+John Cochran I doubt that a thief will spend any amount of time doing diagnostics on a car that isn't turning over. Most security systems can be defeated but the good news is car thieves will not spend a lot of time trying to steal your car, they will most likely move on to the next vehicle. I've always used the yellow wheel locks because they are very visible and serve a a good deterrent for thieves.

@vtr0104
@vtr0104 10 жыл бұрын
That would be an issue, yes :P. However, the car is an '03 SAAB 9-3 petrol with a 5 speed manual. I don't have an aftermarket unit in it, just its normal CD player. It has forward play and shuffle, but has no graphics or anything fancy, so no demo mode either. And the radio is BIOS wired in the car with some strange fiber optic network. It doesn't forget stations even when the car is left with no power for a long time (I've had the battery out of it for 3 months). And the computer is just a basic ECU with preset map for the throttle, it doesn't learn anything other than re-calculating the fuel consumption for every 100 Km's traveled and the clock which I either reset manually or tell it to pick up the time signal via RDS from one of the radio stations. For me, this system works, but yes, as you mentioned, it will have some drawbacks on newer models. I also have a Renault 12 based Dacia 1310, built in '96 but with technology from 1969. Iron block, pushrods, carb, mechanical distributor, 5 speed manual with synchors only on gears 2 to 5, you know.. In that one (not that I'm generally worried about anyone stealing it) I just pop off the distributor cap which takes the plug wires with it and the one from the voltage induction coil. Fuel pump is mechanical so unless it fires it won't even get fuel, let alone any spark, and thieves around here don't tend to carry a full set of wiring with them.

@@pleco101 It's probably got a similar system, I'll wager the Japanese have got it figured out better than some early 2000s GM experimental wiring loom (from the car's manual, they were praising this CAN-BUS system as some revolutionary thing, but all it did was piss people off because every electronic component needed to be added via Tech II encoding if it was replaced: column lock module, ECU / ECM, even adding aux-in to the radio needed to be added into the network). The Nav settings, I wouldn't be able to tell you, I'm like an old man, I read maps before trips and just follow signs and landmarks. My car doesn't have one and I don't even use my phone for that stuff. However, if it's 2007, I'm willing to bet it has some kind of flash memory that would allow it to remember things once power goes out. Easy way to check, just disconnect the battery and leave it overnight. Hook it back up in the morning and see what's different. My bet is you'll also mess your clock up, but not much else. And don't freak out if the transponder key doesn't work right away, mine takes a couple of tries before it and the car get "re-acquainted" :) As for uses, never tampered with them. I'm the 5th owner of this thing and never touched the fuse box. I've had the car 7 years now and as far as I can tell by the grime around the fuse-box hatch, no one's touched it in almost 20 years. GM Quality™ right there :))

I thought the same thing. I guess it just depends on the circumstances where you are parking your car and what you are doing that night. Like if I am on a dinner date I certainly wouldn't be doing all that. What's the weather like? Below zero, snow, thunder storms.....? Where am I parking it and for how long. Airport parking for days whilst I am gone.....? Keep a spar fuse hidden in the trunk of your car just in case you damage or loose the one you took with you from the engine compartment. Instead of removing a fuse, consider taking out the fuel injector module or the ignition module. Even if a would be thief discovered what you had done, what are the odds he would have the exact same module that would work with your car? As with the fuse, keep a spare module in the trunk of your car just in case you loose or damage the one you took with you.

Most professional theives pride themselves on accepting challenges and they come prepared. This will stop a casual thief, but not the pros. If they are looking for a specific kind of car, they WILL know all the tricks. Putting a fake fuse in there is brilliant because they will spot a missing fuse, but they may miss a blown one that is still in place.

Since then though, I don't need a key to start it, only to unlock the wheel, so when I get out, I pull the injector and ecm fuse that are in the interior fuse box right by my knee.. 2 fuses, don't pop the hood, truck doesn't start, cost zero cents. I don't pop fuses or anything, just pull em. A thief isn't going to try to diagnose a no start. It's gonna crank for a few seconds, not start, they're moving on to the next one.

For a little bit of time and patience, one can call up one's local, state, and federal legislators to allow us to declare open season on all criminals and the crimes they commit. That will go a long way towards eliminating crime. Also, we must mete out long sentences to those who subsidize criminals by purchasing whatever those criminals sell. When it comes to a big ticket item such as a car, electronics, high end jewelry, boats, and more, there is no such excuse as "I didn't know it was stolen." The purchaser has a responsibility to exercise due diligence to discover who the real owner is and if the seller is authorized by the real owner to sell the property. We should stop having sympathy for the lazy bums that perpetrate career crime and their enablers.

Thanks for taking time to make a video. It took way longer than 10 seconds. There is better ways to do what you did inside the car. Your way is very obvious especially when you park when you go out. There are usually 2 fuse areas inside the car. Or have a kill switch installed, but if you want to pull a fuse pull it from inside. Thanks.

Re: Color of fuses: You tossed off the color of fuses as immaterial, like it was a whim to make them blue, pink or red. The color defines what amperage the fuse is, which is observed by all fuse manufacturers. A yellow fuse is 20 amps the world around.

Milk Manson That is why i said "IF"..people "hot wire" cars right?..people don't steal cars just cause you leave the keys in the ignition. There are smart thieves out there there not all dumb. I recently watched a documentary about a man who stole high end cars BMW, Corvettes, Audi's.etc not Honda's and Toyota's..you need to be smart to steal those cars. So a fuse pulled out is a laughing matter for those type of thieves. And the only time i hope you pull a fuse from your car is if your leaving you car in the airport or garage for a considerable amount of time..not for day to day basis so the thief has all the time in the world to diagnose the problem and be on his way with you car.(cause he saw you hop on the plane ..etc). And if someone walks up on him he will just claim it is his car and it wont start and continue wondering why it wont start till he gives up or takes the car. (chew on that for a while and you will see why im right)

I did a similar thing on a car I owned except I wired a switch to the fuze to ground to blow the fuel pump fuze if someone tried to start the car without flipping the switch. The fuel pump fuze would blow and the thief could only drive as far as the fuel in the carburetor would last. But you still need to keep spare fuzes for when you forget to flip the switch!! I wired my old MGB so you needed to click an unused switch inside the car to operate the electric fuel pump. If the switch wasn't turned on, the car would start, but only go about 1/8 of a mile before it shut down. It actually worked once, not from a thief, but from a roommate who took the car thinking I wouldn't mind. The car was left near the house on the side of the road. When I got home and my roommate had some explaining to do. So, if I were doing this to a modern car, I would probably do the same thing.

if you keep cranking it, the only thing that will be anything close to damage is the starter. if you keep cranking for too long it will cause your starter to over heat and it can burnout and then you have to get a new starter. The other thing is that it will run your battery down which all that will need is a charge but the battery will run down before your starter has a chance to burnout unless you dont give it a break

After reading and searching so many recommend kill switches and even taking the battery out. My van was stolen three times! They brought their own battery, even replaced the starter fuse I removed. Oh, the first time they wired around the kill switch. The second time they bent the CLUB Brake lock. Now I did the above and remove a relay. - California

I got a way you can secure your car for free! When you go in the the coffee shop just pop your trunk and pull out your socket set, speed jack, engine hoist and Haynes manual, and remove the engine and transmission from your car! Then when a thief goes to start it NOTHING WILL HAPPEN. Still....might not stop those professional car thieves who carry a spare engine and tranny around with them.

You could try smearing peanut butter on the air filter. It will prevent air from getting to the engine and give you the no-start situation that you need. Also, when you are ready to leave the store, simply eat the peanut butter and your car will start right up. maybe. Another great way to prevent your car from starting would be to park the car at your destination, set the emergency brake. then with the engine still running shift into neutral. Here comes the fun part. Firmly put your foot on the accelerator pedal and keep it there. If you have been doing the oil starvation method of preventing car theft, this will be easier for you. If not don't worry. Run the engine wide open throttle. If necessary, have a friend simultaneously spray ether into the filter. You should hear a super loud pop. Once you do, just head on into the store to do some worry free shopping! HTH

You could use a 3 position switch. One side to fuel pump the other side to the car horn and jumper power from the key switch to the horn via the 3rd position. That way the horn will go off when the key switch is turned to the run position and fuel will be cut at the same time. Then when you want to drive toggle it to position 1and it opens the jumped power to the horn and completes the circuit to the fuel pump. Then hide the switch. And throw in a dual spst 12v so you dont have to draw extra amps through the key switch.

Might cost 50 cents for the fuse, but it's gonna cost a lot more when you have to repair your engine and pump for suckling in air instead of fuel. The fuel acts as a lubricant on its travel to the piston. No fuel = no lubrication = burning things up = costly repairs. This is a way to do it, but it'd be worth it just to buy an alarm system for the vehicle.
@protector1990

Buckeyefreak28 I don't know about the engine, but the pump certainly won't suck air in, simply because it would be turned off because of blown fuze...
@Jacksdad619
@Jacksdad619 9 жыл бұрын
Buckeyefreak28 The fuel system is sealed - the pump can't pull air because it's always connected to a fuel line full of gas. With the blown fuse in place, it would just sit there - no power/no damage. And gas doesn't lubricate your motor - oil does. Turning an engine over with no fuel doesn't do it any harm, other than overworking your starter motor and killing your battery.
@adriancalugar3990
@adriancalugar3990 9 жыл бұрын
Actually gas does coat the top of your piston so that when the fuel air mixture combusts it doesn't completely melt your piston but the car has to be running for that damage to be done.
@Jacksdad619
@Jacksdad619 9 жыл бұрын
Adrian Calugar If you have so much gas entering the combustion chamber that it "coats" the piston crown, the engine is running way too rich. Piston crown cooling is usually handled passively by dissipation of heat though the ringlands, rings, and cylinder walls, although some engines make use of jets that squirt oil at the underside of the crown. That much gas would dilute the oil on the cylinder walls and cause seriously accelerated wear. That's the main reason why modern engines last longer - fuel injection meters the fuel way better than carbs ever could, so excess fuel doesn't end up running down the cylinders walls and diluting the oil. Pistons don't melt under normal running conditions - they're designed to take a lot of abuse over many miles of driving.

if the thief knows how to hot-wire the car they also know how to check a fuse. A better option is a hidden switch cut into the power wire that feeds the fuel pump, when you get out of the car you flip the switch and when you get into the car you flip it back again. They will never find the switch because they will not be looking for a switch they will look at the fuses which are all fine get mad and then go after an easier car to steal.

IF I were going to go through the trouble of this method, I would simply break off one of the fuse poles and push it back in the slot, then replace it with a new one when I wanted to drive the car. That way if the thief would go through the trouble of checking the fuse box, the fuse isn't visibly blown alerting them to the problem.

ummm why not just take the damn fuse out and carry it with you... that would be free and accomplish the same thing

They could move a similar fuse into it's place. Basically replacing it with a dead fuse is security through obscurity... Then again, how could they tell if that car needs a fuse in that specific place... Rip this argument...

My old Acura sedan was stolen last year before I got serious about protecting my car against car theft. I got the car back the very next night because a cop pulled over the young driver and his friends out cruising around in my car at 11pm. Seems they didn't have any taillights. The headlights worked fine but without the taillights they were a sitting duck at night. All as a result of my 'jerry rigging" the electrical system to get all of the lights to work. Only I knew about the separate taillights switch under the dash. So I know it saved me and I got my car back, plus the court made the car thief' reimburse me for my loss of about $300 for damage to the car and towing charge. The court sent me a check every month after the thief paid them to give it to me. After that, I started thinking about ways to make my car safer from theft at a reasonable cost. Removing that fuel pump fuse, or replacing it with a blown one, is a good inexpensive deterrent but it's not something I would want to deal with twice a day... it's a good thing for long term storage though, like for a week or more or if you were parked in a high crime neighborhood. Most thieves are not going to pop the hood when it wont start so the easiest way to disable the car is to pull one end of the coil wire out and let it hang. Takes ten seconds. Reinserting it in the morning takes about another ten seconds. Yeah, a thief could reinsert it too if he knew what to look for or even wanted to take a look but most wont. You can always take the coil wire with you if you like a little extra measure of protection. The "Club" steering wheel lock and Auto lock brake pedal lock are two more additional layers of protection. Unless they really want your particular car real bad they will likely move on to easier victims.

Ok better yet hide a toggle switch that disables fuel pump relay instead of all that unnecessary work. My way much better sorry .

Blows fuse, then realizes he has none in his garage, now has to walk to store. LOL.

You might walk to the store - I'd just use the fuse from the horn LOL
