I fixed my ford with the same problem by disconnecting the battery. The control module resets and it works. I got it to move by manually depressing the small pinhole next to the shifter. That was a temporary fix which had to be done every startup. This battery deal has worked for over 6 months so far, the car works like normal. FYI hope it works for you

Leave it disconnected for a couple of minutes. It worked for me in my Ford. It's free and can't hurt anything. Take off the negative terminal.

This can also be because you have a shortage or a low-level CVT fluid. This just happened to me after I change the alternator yes the alternator because you have to remove the radiator and fans to get access and the CVT coolant lines are on the bottom of the radiator. You have to unclamp. I leaked about a half a quart of CVT fluid which instantly caused this problem when I crank the car up and drove it. I added half a quart and no more problem.

I have done this to our 2009 pathfinder about 3 years ago and never got it fixed but now on cold days it still is stuck I park for about 5 minutes. What else could cause the suv to be stuck in park with the switch mechanism bypassed. Thx.

Neil - There isn't a recall so far - if there was it would be free - sorry - keep checking though - a recall can happen if enough complain - you will be covered if and when there is one

Press and hold the button down while pulling the gear shift back at same time - give it a good tug if the car is on a grade of any kind

If you are pushing down on the button properly it should feel a bit springy - so push down all the way then pull gearshift while keeping pressure on button

It is up on ramps we had to replace the Solenoid in the transmission. We have pulled on it fairly hard and it still wouldn't move but will double check that the button is being pushed down all the way. Will let you know how it turns out. Thanks

2012 Altima stuck in park no solenoid sound when brake depress, brake lights work. Pushing button releases from part drives find but now when put in park it beeps, dash says it's not in park. I have to disconnect battery to stop beeping. Also alarm key light on?

Could be same problem but trans in different location - You need to check trans fluid and get codes to start to diagnose it.

Thank you but the strangest thing is , when I pull over with the locked brakes , I can take the brake switch loose that is on the pedal and unsnap the wire and immediately the brake will release. Plug it back in and off I go for a few more miles and locks up again. But ; if I unsnap and re snap the brake switch , and do not replace the switch back in its proper place , just let it hang down , which leaves the brake lights on, I can go anywhere I choose , but hence, brake lights stay on . Plug the switch back in an walaw, back to te the same lock up problem ?? Wow what a nightmare !!

Well I have good news , I took it to the dealer today for this problem and because it had 3 minor recalls ... a relay was the problem .. car is fixed and running well!!

I'm guessing in Canada it would be hundreds of dollars - but - free if it is a recall but if you live in the US and file a compliant it might become one - btw - your car is under recall for the airbag right now

I'm in the United States and I did call Nissan Corporation and they told me that I need to bring it to a Nissan dealer so that they could file a complaint on it to see if it's a known issue, so that it could possibly be a recall.... and I have taken it in for recalls for the air bag and also a hood latch.

You need to bring it to them but they aren't in the habit of filing complaints to NHTSA on your behalf or Nissan would take away thier dealership. But bringing it in and documenting the problem is a very good idea - it has lead to recalls before - get a qoute on how much to fix the problem and find out if they know if its common - hold off on the repair for now if they want you to pay -

Nena honestly, mine sticks sometimes. However it hasn’t recently, I stopped plugging in my Bluetooth which was located right next to the gear shift. And that seems to be working so far.

Sorry so late, im a nissan tech and just now started to look around youtube for car issues out of boredom. Anyway there is a little microswitch under the shifter (3 actually) its just a small flat metal spring that pushes a tiny button and the spring is pushed by a part of the shifter depending on its pndr location. The spring looses its tension and cannot push the tiny button over time. Theyre not sold seperate from the whole assembly.

*ATTENTION* if you're reading this right now the problem isn't what you think. After inspecting my car for about 10 mins I discovered my hood slightly ajar (which there is a recall for the hood latch). I reclosed it making sure it was completely shut. Presto! Shifter works like brand new. I suspect this is a safety feature so it doesn't swing up blinding you while on the highway. This is also why I suspect people who reset their batteries had luck because they have to open and close the hood. Dont drop big money for this if you dont have to. Take it in for your hood latch first.

Art - 13 to 18 Altima's don't have any electrical switching on the hood release so this is most likely not a solution - disconnecting the battery might be though

@@carquestions I tested two ways. First I closed the hood, turned it on and was able to take it out of park easy. Then I put it back in park turned the car off. Pressed the hood release but didn't open it. Turned the car on and I could take it out of park but I couldn't do it after stopping again. I vaguely remember pressing the button by accident instead of the trunk a few days ago and I've been using the shift lock button all these days. Never disconnected my battery or anything. Gonna test again later though to see if one of the break lights is out or some other electrical issue I can replicate

I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't try that, it's a Murphy's law issue I have. But I sure am getting tired of sticking stuff into that shift lock thing. I dunno I have odd luck with cars. People say you get what you pay for ykr?! Exception unless you're buying a car from me, then you'll get a heckuva deal. I sold my old SUV- it was beat up but I liked it anyway, a lot. Darn thing broke down on a highway overpass in rush hour, I had my 4 month old baby, a police officer happened to see us he ended up giving us a ride. Btw police cars aren't equipped for baby carriers omg so funny. I had my car towed I was in a pissy mood, I told my mechanic, I'm done! I didn't wasnt my SUV anymore. But that's mainly cuz I thought it'd cost a ton of $$$ to fix. My mechanic so helpful. Pff. He got a buyer in no time. I went up there to sign over the title, collect $200, I thought man I hope they know all they can do is salvage this thing. It's dead and gone. Oh well capitalist society right? Gave him the keys title, he got his gas can out and started pouring gas in the tank - Got in and away he went. Wait, WHUUT? Yes, that is correct. It was just outta gas, I was pissed off. I said, Bullshit follow him, I want my car back NOW!! I MEAN IT. THey're like, TOO LATE NOW, you know capitalist society and all- I guess seller beware too. Smh. Still can't believe this. I basically gave away my SUV because it was out of gas. 😩 I'm not proud of that either but oh well, shit happens.

Well now you know more of the basics. That's why you shouldn't make rash decisions in emotions before objectively checking things out. Did you not smell gas before it died? Notice nothing else act up? As a rule of thumb,never drive below 1/4 tank. You can damage the fuel pump that way. I suggest you learn more about cars before saying your luck is bad.

lol, this is awful. don't do this!!! if your car comes out of gear and in an accident insurance most likely wont cover it! this is usually an easy fix anyway, either the switch at your pedal or the little actuator at the shifter....

Terrible idea show people how to override a safety feature. Generally the actual issue is the micro switch on the shifter assembly. If you took the center console out, you could adjust/space the switch properly so the shift interlock will work properly.

I fixed my ford p/u 3 different ghetto ways and, my ford is still running after 3 1/2 years.It would have cost me $2,387.58 to fix it correctly.
