Carrier 23XRV VFD Chiller Soft Start and Ramp Sequence

@Straycurrent I've only been into that panel once (because the unit is almost always running) and I'd think it is cooled by the refirgerant itself through the heat sink. There are also some cooling fans. The major service to this unit is done by Carrier. I fix everything else around it. The Carrier guy did say they had issues when it was new but went with another "vender" for a better VFD which was installed in this thing under warranty. It is pretty sweet. And quiet.

@AirplaneVideos1 It happens to be what we have. It is a sweet unit. About 4 years old maybe. But it did have to get a new VFD soon after it was installed (before i worked there) and last spring it had to get the float valve fixed (metering device). It was starving the evap and shutting down. Both fixed under warranty by Carrier. The higher end stuff is nice. People tell me the effinity is really cool for resi. But some of their stuff is thin crap compared to old stuff like 50QQ's, etc.

@84randomdude LOL! I work at a facility now maintaining what is here in the three buildings. The main facility uses the chilled water. I work inside over 90% of the time now too. :-) The only bad thing is less pay. But it's normal hours and it takes me 15 min to get to work, 15 min to get home each day. That gains me almost 2 hours of personal time back each day from driving to and from my first/last calls as i did in the field.

Nice equipment. I'm amazed at VFD technology and the fact that it can control such large electrical loads using a relatively small control unit. Does the VFD cool itself with just the ambient air in the mech room, or does it get some cooling help from the chill water loop?

@joeyf504327 As the water evaporates it takes heat away form the remaining water. The loop of water in the cooling towers maintains about 80 degrees which pumps through the chiller condenser to remove the heat form the refrigeration.

@84randomdude It might be MORE than 500 tons. The building has a few hundred residential units within the 6 story building (7 stories on one side). The avg sq ft in teach resi unit is about 1600 or so, like a home. There is a full service kitchen with about 6 dining rooms. Plus a cafe like area with a dining area. A floor with ammendaties. A floor with an entertainment area enough for several hundred people to meet. And all the offices for the managers, etc 10,000+ elec bill for the HVAC

I don't know. It seems to sound the same all the time. And from what I heard, this unit's VFD died when it was almost brand new and they used a VFD from another vendor that superceded the first one. That was before I worked there and for main repairs on these chillers the facility here lets Carrier do those repairs.

Sounds like you might want to add a couple skip freqs to the drive config. Awesome machines but they sure do like to shake below 40%

I saw on one of your videos that this compressor's VFD has a 4 KHz fixed PWM switching frequency. At my old work, which also dealt with HVAC systems for multiple buildings, we found out that some VFDs (namely ABB drives) have a parameter you can set that makes the switching frequency a random and variable value, getting rid of the screaming sound from the motor. Does this chiller have a setting like that you can enable?

oh do the cooling towers just evaporate the water to get excess heat out before the water goes into the chiller to be well... chilled?

@84randomdude yes i know that as hackfreehvac told me that a while ago, i was just curious as to just what the towers do to cool the water, like where the pumps pump the water to and when the fans run, just more in dept is what i was trying to get at, thanks though

What comment are you referring to? Carrier is generally ok. But they do make some cheap crap. i.e. builder grade residential units. Their early R410 stuff leaked like crazy. LOL! They all have their junky builds. But I'm more a Goodman Manufacture basher than a Carrier basher. Carrier has some good stuff. I don't mind the GTR60 air cooled unit we have at another building. I do the repairs on that one myself. Getting ready to replace the other Hot Gas Bypass Valve.

yes this is high bearing temp "you have any idea to solve this problem/ bez this alarm generate 10 sec to 20 sec when compressor start/ i have face same problem 6 month before that time i reset one time than compressor runing good condition and bearing temp is normal but now

This unit is a crew drive 23XRV :-) We do also have a 19X but I am not that familiar with it. Did you mean high bearing temp?

We do occasionally change vendors Ian's designs in production runs. Besides, what have you built lately ? A toilet flush valve more than likely !!

I have three 19XR and if they are crap . They never have given 44 ° F and are alarmed by low water flow . and carrier mexico technicians have done everything and nothing. model: 19XR - 5555436LDH64 serial: 3012Q21981

Mohammad Danish Khan: High bearing temperature may cause due to blockage in oil cooler expansion valve. It can be resolved by replacing the expansion valve may be along with catchall drier.

That's just how it is programmed. I've fired it up after the loop has warmed up before and it will ramp up within a few minutes and start kicking butt. The program just prevents it from ramping right up.

I would not ask for any advice from this moron with an EPA card. Wisely as he himself stated, his bosses only permit Carrier to work on this machine. That's how we, the factory trained Carrier Engineers prefer it as it keeps our machines operating properly and it keeps others from being injured. There are voltage charges that are stored in these vfd's that can cause injury or death. If you are not trained please call us.
