Hello from the jersey shore. Those carriers that have the yellow and green lights are communicating systems but they have a couple different levels of that and will only start the fan on a valid call to start from the board. Contactor only control's compressor,some even have variable speed fans and compressors. I miss working on these but they can be quite troublesome with communication errors due to our salt air and corrosion on the board outside. Keep up your good work and help me stay fed

When a motor has been severely overheated, and the internal overload opened several time as in this instance, I always place a note to the provider (third party retail service) that there is a strong possibility of near term failure, and that the motor should be replaced for reliable operation. That way, it cannot become a callback when it fails on a hot day. Not replacing the motor is not a reprieve, it's a new date for total failure and a mandatory replacement at some point in the future.

Mikey, I would be willing to bet my paycheck that the condenser fan motor is fine. Unit started up, capacitor popped, and the motor tried like hell to start without it, so it went in the thermal overload and you cooled it off, I bet it works fine for years to come.

I really could’ve used a coolpressor yesterday, was wishing I had one. On a residential 4 ton Goodman condenser that’s only 6 years old, the compressor was off on thermal overload, and extremely hot to the touch. The capacitor was fine. There wasn’t even an accessible hose bib near me, so I just grabbed my Home Depot bucket and and used it to dump cold water over it. After it reset itself, the (scroll) compressor made a loud racket and was running backwards. Time for a new compressor.

👍 very nice. Can you run some tests with a thermal camera after some run time to check wiring for hot spots and loose connections. I think 🤔 were having some resistance issues. Or mechanical resistance. I like your thinking.

Great presentation skills on your part. I will say that (even though it achieved your SHORT TERM goal of getting the unit QUICKLY running again) I am not so sure that RAPIDLY cooling ANYTHING mechanical OR electrical is a great policy to follow for the long term health of most things. Maybe a compressor is the exception to that general rule of physics (but maybe not) Same goes for the condenser fan??? I don't know, just some food for thought.

Was the filter in backwards? I thought the metal part of a flat filter goes on the downstream side, not the intake side as shown - it's there to keep the filter paper or media from being sucked into the coil/air passages where the air goes after being sucked through the return grate.
@AmericanFarmerHVAC20242 жыл бұрын
Some filters have the structure on both sides
@snidelywhiplash89232 жыл бұрын
@@AmericanFarmerHVAC2024 Did that one have it on both sides? A competent tech is observant of his surroundings, it would have been easy to check. It was open and just hanging there. @@matthewhoffman9242 You may be right about the thermostat. But I'm not sure a newly installed thermostat to control an older system would have been "branded" to match the installed equipment. Aren't these more typically seen installed with new equipment?

Hey, great video - thanks! I have the same system and a similar issue. I put in a new cap, and the fan spun a bit then shut down. I bought a new fan and the new fan spins longer but shuts down after 20min of run while the compressor keeps going. Coils are clean, filter is new. I swapped fans from my second condenser (same specs and runs fine) and it did the same thing. Any thoughts on what it could be or how to troubleshoot?

My carrier condenser fan will turn very slowly when not in use. It will stop if I pull the power disconnect out. Otherwise the system runs just fine. I confirmed that the fan is using around 35watts when doing this. I also tested the three wires when it’s in this slow turn state and the brown wire going to the capacitor reads 91 volts and the black wire going to the control board reads 97.7 volts. The yellow wire going to the switch reads 123v. When the ac is actually on, all three wires have 123v readings. I’ve replaced the capacitor and the switch but that didn’t resolve the issue. I tested resistance on all three wires from the motor and there are no signs if an issue. If I turn power off to the control board but leave the disconnect connected, the fan will turn slowly and the 97 and 92 volts are still there. Any idea what would cause this?
@PipeDoctor Жыл бұрын
AC or Dc?
@flapbreaker2 Жыл бұрын
@@PipeDoctor It's AC. Since posting this, I believe I have narrowed this down to some issue with the crankcase heater. One leg of the CCH attaches to a control board and shares a blade with the black fan wire. If i disconnect the CCH, then the fan stops turning (this turning is when no AC is being called for). It's an overly complicated wiring setup so I can't wrap my brain around why they want it wired this way but also, why is the fan turning. Something tells me that normally there wouldn't be enough voltage making it through the motor to turn it but that perhaps, there is more voltage going through that CCH leg than normal?
