Great video. On some of the (older?) carrier units these are in, the larger Carlyle compressors have a internal protector in 24v series with the LP, HP, FP.

Thanks a lot SLC tech for clarifying things for me. Never knew how it actually worked. Great teacher!

Hi, SLC. TB here. The most frequent cause of the CLO locking out the compressor is when the LP switch opens during a low ambient startup on units without a working economizer. Carrier had a timer kit that could be installed to bridge the LP switch until pressures could rise enough that the LP would stay closed. We found we could make our own bypass. Of course, I have found the compressor conductor removed from the sensing loop and terminals 2 and 3 jumpered together by others... which is not the right approach to that issue. When they place that jumper, they lose the protection the safeties provide, including the HP switch and the freeze stat. The purpose of the board is to not allow the contactor to ride on the safeties, opening and closing repeatedly when there is a problem. This way, the tech can know that an issue exists, and then investigate the issue, and the contactor can have a much longer lifespan, along with the compressor. That's a very good explanation of the way it works, too.

Hello SLC Tech Yesterday I was working on one of the Carrier Horizontal units with a Current Sensing Board. It was my first time troubleshooting one of these boards. I suspected it had something to do with the amp draw because my compressor was drawing too much amp and it was shutting down on LRA Locl Rotor Amp. When I removed the common wire on the board and contactor will energize try to start the compressor but it will fail on LRA. Thank you for clarifying. Great educational video.

Thank you sooo much. My air con does not recover after power outages, until I manually reset the thermostat, sometimes I have to turn off the breaker.

Thank you, thank you.....SLC TECH😀😀😀😀. I had been searching for this circuitry and explanation for a while. I was so happy to came across your channel and VOILA!!!! there she is hehehe. The best ClO explanation of what it does and how it operates. BTW , Thanks for the wiring diagram. God bless you and your family.

Thank you for this video, by any chance are you familiar with the blue control boards with the CLO moles plug intertwined with the main board itself? And if the CLO trips would the condenser fan motor stay running without the compressor?

TY , For this. So if I measure 24 volts at terminal X that means the board is in Lockout due to a low current at the compressor? Other than that X terminal should not read any Voltage in normal operation operation.

Now i know how it works what is its main purpose of the CLO . To detect any fault that stops current in winding and require a power cycle to reset ??

It is actually pretty rare for the board to fail. It can happen, but I encourage techs to exhaust all other avenues, first.

Dude, you didn’t mention that it won’t start up if it senses current when not calling, not so needed with this but the older ones people try to jump out
