📜 Video Description 📜
It's tempting to make blockers the primary feature of your poker thought process. After all, blocker effects are visually observable in solvers, easy to remember, and concrete. But did you know that blockers actually havce a very small swing on the EV of a poker spot? There are always far more important theoretical and exploitative factors to pay attention to. This video aims to help you treat your blocker abuse habit.

@9:20ish you describe blockers as a "deal breaking factor". I think what you meant was "tie breaking", as they should be considered last. something that was "deal breaking" is actually a primary consideration. like if you were looking for a 2 bedroom apartment, a place that has one bedroom is immediately removed from consideration. that is a "deal breaker". but, I am guessing you know all that & just misspoke.

The solvers make things worse because they are pretty much designed to make a bunch of hands ~0EV, so the 0.01 BB effect of blockers makes an outsized effect on the visual charts.

great content, to use blockers, you need to be able to identify "close" spots, against someone who only bets the nuts in a certain spot, even if there's only 2 combos and you block 1, it's still a fold

blockers are definitely overrated these days. people talk as if dominated hands and reverse domination is a rare occurence or something. i totally agree with your statement, 'we block blah blah' had me 😂

I don't understand that small flop bet 20:08. I know that the ranges are quite wide SB vs BB, but we don't have nuts advantage and not much range advantage. We have AA KK QQ, AQ and opponent doesn't. That's about it. On such a board shouldn't we play quite often check or high bet?

Maybe the community of poker coaches should work to change the language being used. Would it be benificial to say "filter" instead of "block"? Having 1 King in your hand does filter out 4 possible combos of Ace King, but leaves 12 other combos available.
@atfti
@atfti 8 ай бұрын
Changing terminology won't change the problem, because the idea is what they vocalize and non critically thinking players will just hear it and reproduce the filtering erroneously. It's just experience and targeted learning, the latter of which this video provides

I'm just curious how you feel your book Grinder's Manual holds up today. I've read a couple hundred pages, and it seems like most of what I've read is right in line with more recent stuff, the one thing that seems different to me is bet sizing, particularly on the flop. Seems trendy to make very small raises on the flop these days. What stuff would you update if you could, briefly?

I think the hand you presented in the video isn't good example for low stakes. The river jam reraise on 4 to a straight and flush hit is extremely underbluffed, and I think it's a fold even if I got the hands you described.

I had to come back to say i watched check back monster yesterday and then had an ear to ear smile the rest of my session after it saved me probably 300bbs. Opened Q8s on the button and called a bb 3b. Flop was Q87 he leads 10bb i call. 7 on turn bb x i x back he leads 15bb on blank river i raise 40bb and he just called with 88 i couldve and most likely wouldve lost so much more if i dont x bavk that turn

could you do a video on adjusting to players who make polarization errors? This is very very common in microstakes. Often at the river I “can’t” really use a lot of the river decision tactics I’ve learned because the river is less about villains bluff to value ratio and more about what range of hands are they overvaluing. I find myself in a lot of spots where I know a villain is definitely betting the river with an unbalanced range of hands, but I can’t be sure if bottom pair or AK high is a profitable call because they’re probably going to “bluff” (or value bet i have no idea what they’re thinking) with a weak 2nd or 3rd pair. not trying to whine like a lot of people do about microstakes play. Just curious what the correct way to adjust to play like this is. A lot of adjustments can be counterintuitive so I don’t know if calling down more merged is all I should be doing or if it’s actually the opposite of what I should be doing or what. I also think it’s a very common player type probably even in higher stakes (I mean there are recs in every stake) so would probably be very valuable

okay, fair enough video. Now, I have worked quite a bit with solvers and we all know that you have too... In my opinion, blockers are relevant outside of the bluffcatch system. If we choose to polarize the cbet from the flop, special hands are chosen that block continues and do not affect the folding range. (already starting from the flop) Also, to build 3bet flop ranges, blockers that block value in the range construction are used. Not to mention preflop either, or when taking an OOP option whether to value or leverage an XR for example (we also use blockers in this aspect to select the ends to use that meet the best properties) Is it necessary for NL25-50? absolutely not. Is it necessary to build a solid strategy, understand (not copy) why a solver "chooses" such a hand/suit to make X move? Of course

I check raised all my blockers in a session and was called in all of them. lost 4.5 buyins because of blockers! This stuff doesn't work, it's useless!! The takeway is: even if your have 3 blockers, that doesn't mean your opponent won't have the remaining 1 out, but even if he doesn't he will still calling you with worse... having blockers won't magically prevent your opponent from being a station... the ace high flush blocker won't intimidate lower flushes... this stuff simply doesn't work at small stakes. Don't do it.
