The Ball Preserving book is great. I’ve added this new one to my library of them going back to my mom’s 1947 copy. What’s particularly great about it is that it contains a lot of the great information from the home canning pamphlets that were available from the old Government Printing Office. I found mine at my local Ace in with the canning supplies.

That is very cool!

@ to be clear, I don’t have all of them. Wish I did. But enough to see how things changed over the decades. Tomato conserve with nuts and raisins from the 1940s is a winner and has no current equivalent.

Thanks again Susan. That tip about bone meal is a good one. I find my pumpkins and winter squash like it but will make it a part of my root crop planting too. That is a great reminder about the fermentation. Lots of information now about how beneficial those foods are. Hope you and Bill and enjoying the fall!

Hi, Joyce. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. We've been having a beautiful fall so yes, we're definitely enjoying it. The weather is changing here, though, with a possibility of some snow this weekend.

I’ve got that fermenting kit and we’ve only made regular kraut and curried kraut. I love curry and like it best and it has some carrots. This year was a bust for carrots. Not sure what went wrong-too much rain and I didn’t till, but loosened the area with fork. They just didn’t get as big as normal. I really don’t like small carrots as too hard to clean and I like leaving skin on. Also had some nodules on a few and not sure if root knot nematode is the problem. I red it’s beneficial to till sandy soil to control and that may have been the issue. I did use fertilizer and believe bonemeal as I use it a lot-maybe not enough? As we had a ton of rain. Carrots would store very nice like that, but we no longer have a garage-sigh. We made above ground root cellar that has worked so far, but our last two winters were mild. The remote temp sensor doesn’t always have a great reception either. I seen a comment that potatoes were sprouting and experiencing the same because our weather has been way too warm since harvest. No cool place to put them. May have to dig a garbage can in the ground next year, that might be the best option. Thank you for tips!

This year was challenging for us with carrots, too.

I love these videos! Would you be able to link the storage containers you are using? Thank you!

I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos! The seen in the photo is actually an old lawn mower grass-catcher, LOL. But we also use Rubbermaid heavy duty plastic totes. Something along these lines: www.walmart.com/ip/Rubbermaid-Roughneck-Storage-Box-14-gal-15-88-x-23-88-x-12-25-Dark-Indigo-Metallic-Each/1894622854?classType=REGULAR.

I thought last year you said you stored your potatoes in the same way as the other root vegs with damp straw? How are you storing potatoes now? Mine started sprouting so I canned 21 pints yesterday but still have a lot left. Made yummy potato soup tonight.
@SusansInTheGarden2 ай бұрын
Sorry for the confusion. We are storing ours in our chilly basement, inside our orchard rack. But we have found the damp straw can cause problems with the potatoes (quicker deterioration). We are still experimenting! I'll bet your soup is delicious.

@@SusansInTheGarden That was my problem with the potatoes last year. I had mine in basement when ac was on buy once heat came on they started sprouting so I moved them to our unheated garage. I wish I could find a storage that would keep them longer.

@@joycearthur5244 I know what you mean. They can be pretty tricky. We keep experimenting and I promise to let everyone know if/when we hit upon the best method!

Susan, I'm not seeing the link to the National Center for Home Preservation. Did I just miss it or did you forget to put it in the show notes?

My apologies, Dolly! I have added it to the list.

How cold does your garage get in the winter?
@SusansInTheGarden2 ай бұрын
Hi, Andrea. Our garage is insulated but not heated. Most years, it never gets below freezing. But if we have a really cold spell, it can drop a bit below that. Fortunately, with the way the carrots are packed with straw, they come through it just fine.

are these carrots you planted in the spring or this fall??
