Multi-instrumentalists, singer-songwriters, and longtime friends Clare Sands and Susan O’Neill were recently forced to brush their hair after being enticed out of their West of Ireland haunts to create this dark and dirty, big and bold, spine-tingling sea shanty.
With Susan on trumpet, congas, vocals and dulcimer, and Sands on violin, cello, vocals, and synth, the wild west women recorded, engineered, and self-produced their debut single together in 72 hours on location in Co. Clare. The collaboration is part of Clare's four part series 'Tírḋreacha agus Fuaimḋreacha', which sees Sands embarking on an exploration of the crooks and crannies of Ireland’s sights and sounds, whilst breaking the boundaries of Irish music in an inviting, invigorating way.
Accompanied by a head bangin’, feet stompin’, cliff dancin’ video directed and shot by emerging visual artists and twin sisters Liadain and Kasia Kaminska over two freezing cold days in January, the performance explores Ireland’s rich soundscapes and landscapes through dark and light, love and loss, day and night, navigating through uncharted territories where Irish and English languages, Traditional, Folk, and Contemporary musics meet.

Well, something surely carried this song across the sea.....to Vermont, US, in my case. What a thunderous tune. And the recording/production are bold and intense, as is the videography. And shot on the beach at Fanore makes it even better. I've been working on moving to Clare over the last two years since I visited. So yes, the song made its way across the sea, and I hope I'll be overt the same sea before long. Glad I discovered this music.
