Carry Passengers on your Tern GSD & HSD Ebike | Tern Captains Chair

Since the launch of the Tern HSD many people were wondering if you could carry small passengers and how that would be handled. Tern always had the passenger kit in mind and we are now grateful to introduce the Tern Captains Chair. I think this is going to extend the usefulness of these already awesome bikes to a whole other level.

Great video Chris, thanks. I just took delivery of an HSD for my wife from the Brooklyn Propel shop to go along with the GSD I got in 2018 from you guys. I have the Clubhouse on the GSD, and I keep a foldable "trunk" bag that fits nicely in the clubhouse - it is a perfect solution, as it is easy to remove, and mostly I just just fold up half of it when I have my 7 yr old on the back, and otherwise leave it extended. I could see the Captains Chair working in that way on the GSD too - looks like a trunk bag or other type of crate would drop in nicely between the seat and the bars. However for the HSD, given the very slack seat tube angle, I think those bars will travel backward to an unacceptable degree (encroaching on the passenger compartment too much) if you have the seat post extended much more than you do in the video. Maybe better to forgo the handlebars and get a seat with a small handle built in as you mentioned in the video...

And now I have another option among which I am struggling to decide. Current GSD set up: Yepp Easy Fit Maxi. We are really at the very edge of the weight limit, but the mutipoint harness is great for helping my daughter (who has some balance issues) feel secure. Option Clubhouse: She loves the look of this and informed me that she wanted it, but I am worried that she won't feel secure in it once we are rolling. I don't want to lift her into it, either. I also worry about height clearance when I bungee her bike to my sidekick deck to tow it. Would very much simplify attaching my crate for grocery runs, though. Option Yepp Junior: Has a lap belt and can be positioned in the forward easy fit window to keep the weight towards the center. Would have to be imported from Europe. According to a blogger I follow, it will work with the Clubhouse if it is installed in the forward easy fit window. Option Qibbel Junior: Another European importation situation. Has an lap belt. Clamps onto the sides of the platform, so the seat is a little lower. According to my blogger source, seat height is in plane with a Klick fix mounted seatpad. Will not work with the club house at all. Option Klickfix seat pad: Not going to work for us right now, but I wish could buy the attachment mechanism and bolt it to the bottom of my grocery crate. Option Captain's Chair: A definite maybe? It would put her all the way at the back on the GSD. Adding a seat belt to it would be easy. Swapping the seat for the grocery crate would be easy, too. I will y'all were closer to Tennessee. Bike shopping is rough out here in flyover country.

Thanks Chris for this passenger seat review. I have been looking for seating ideas for my Lectric XP ebike to accommodate our first great-grandson who is as of this writing, 20 months old. I haven't seen anything, but your review here, has given me ideas on how to make something of my own that would be safe. Our little guy is growing fast, summer weather is now finally here in Michigan, so I need to get going on this project; he wants to ride! BTW, the young lady in this video is pretty cute too!

Thanks for this video Chris. I’m currently deciding whether to get an HSD as a car replacement and was waiting to see what the passenger option would look like. In order to replace my car, in addition to carrying cargo, the HSD would need to be able to carry either of my teenage daughters at times for short trips. So this video was helpful. How tall is the young lady in the video - about 5’5”, or shorter? Either way, I agree with your suggestion that the sidekick handlebar would probably be better for someone her size.

Great video Chris. It seems the atlas kickstand ain't compatible with the HSD, do you happen to know if there are any other dual kickstands that would be compatible with the HSD?

someone needs to make bars for each side that bolt into each side of the wheel with the wheel nut and has multiple prongs that extend up to the rear rack to help support the rear rack increasing weight capacity. Anyone could go to a welder and prob get some made (depends how the rear rack is mounted already cause some already use the wheel nuts)

Do you know if I can use the Cargo 37 panniers as leg protection instead of the mesh by Tern? I don't like the look of the mesh; looks like an afterthought.

Captain's Chair is a nice option for junior kids 4-6 but doesn't feel secure without harness points especially when the driver has to break tight. Seating a teen in the back might turn dangerous in an incident. they cant get out.

It looks like the hang bar for the panniers is accessible and shouldn't interfere when panniers are closed. When panniers are open, it looks like feet would need to dangle into the panniers.

How confortable is this tern e bike , especially for long rides ?

I'd say it's pretty comfortable. If you want to increase the comfort I would recommend adding a suspension seatpost and you will find the bike to be very comfortable. I would recommend the Kinect seatpost. We did a video on it recently. See below. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4nLcpauecSSjLc

Any tutorial videos on how to program a Maxfoot MF-18P w/750w rear hub drive. My battery was defective. But being repaired/replaced. When it arrives next week,hopefully. I need to program correctly. I'm a bit Technologically Challenged.

I think the Tern HSD is a great way to go or you could consider a front loader like the Urban Arrow since you will be able to see her in front of you
