i used to live off the land in wilderness areas of idaho (sawtooth and frank church) for up to 6 months at a time for about 15 years, always carried firearms, had them soaked for long periods and i did pretty much just what you suggest in this video and i never had a gun rust at all, keep them out of holster etc when in camp and wipe down and oil them regularly - so you covered it well - i never used a horse, just hiked everywhere, living off land, idaho is a paradise and provides everything one needs to live

In the Navy, I used to carry a rifle-cleaning kit at all times. Get a brush set, oil, then field strip your rifle, and start cleaning everything. Moisture tends to hide and it can damage the rifle terribly!

I always run the BoreSnake from breech-to-muzzle, same way the bullet travels. I do this for multiple reasons, but chiefly, because by pulling it out the muzzle, I pull any contaminants out of the gun. If you clean muzzle-to-breech, you will pull some contaminants into your action. Love your videos.

I am not as much of a cowboy as you but I owned horses and hunted for 50 years, and I have trail ridden an hunted with horses many many times. I enjoy your videos because they correlate well with my own experiences and thoughts on your subjects. It is obvious to me that a lot of people telling other people how to do things, have not done much of it themselves.

Now we know why the old winchesters had saddle rings. If you're crossing a river, pull your rifle out of the scabbard and put it across in front of you. If you're afraid of losing it secure it to the saddle with a cord through the saddle ring. Don't know how many old muzzle loaders I've seen with the forestock worn through just about where they'd rest across a saddle.

Good video. The kind of advice that comes from experience. Simple and to the point. Regarding the 45-70, I would zero my marlin lever action at the range with other men who had scopes on their long-range rifles. At 100 to 200 meters my shot groups were tighter than anyone's with a scope.

I had given thought to this many times over the last two years since I bought a leather scabbard for my Henry lever gun. I had come to the conclusion that maybe tying an oil cloth over the rifle stock and end of the scabbard may be enough to keep the water from accumulating in the scabbard. But these things I just don't know. That's why I come here to the Dry Creek Wrangler School.

I never understood not cleaning a gun. A buddy of mine is a gunsmith and I can't believe how many hunters bring their guns to him to be cleaned at the END of the season. I clean and inspect mine at the end of every day. I do a lot of waterfowl hunting and once in a while some waterfowl guides will give me a call to come out with them if they don't have a full blind. Now my job (if necessary) is to shoot along side the paying hunters and knock some birds down so the limits get filled. One of the last hunts I was on had Benelli's, Versamax's, etc. and those guys didn't dry, clean, and oil their guns each night or maybe even at all - ever. We were hunting Lake Seneca in about 17Deg weather. Second day everyone was having failures. When it's really rough like that, or I'm paying, I take my 870. Yea it's a pump but it's reliable - especially if ya clean the darn thing once in a while.

If you would like to run a traditional wooden steel gun in some really wet climate the best thing you can do is get yourself some renaissance wax. Before you head out on your trip, disassemble the barrel from the stock. Coat your entire stock with renaissance wax. Inside the barrel groove, etc. You can rub down all metal parts with the wax as well. This is safe for all firearms, collectors pieces, museum pieces, whatever. It’s pretty incredible stuff. This will stop any moisture from being absorbed by your stock. A good coat of wax will keep that wood and steel safe.

@@viktik1946 I simply ordered mine on Amazon. Comes in a couple sizes. I bought the small 65ml jar (a little bit goes a long way, but I have only used it on a couple of pistol holsters, so if you are going to coat larger projects, you might want the larger size). Small silver metal jar with a big white label with what looks like some kind of “lion” on the label.

I'm a fan of gun wax. It's just an extra barrier of protection for the metal and wood. Deer hunting in Wisconsin, we get some snow. The snow will melt and it beads right off

Just bought a 🐸 Frog Toggs for my bolt it’s supposed to float With the rifle and keep it water proof took a little time to figure out how to wrap the end it’s light weight but not real portable unless your going to sling it over your back. I will say their jackets and pants are great light weight completely water proof and comfortable and afford a lot of wind protection from elements not bulky like a rubber rain suit worth owning so I hope the rifle case is as good as the clothes. The case added no weight to the my rifle over my shoulder very light weight. But you would not be able to draw your carbine quickly as it had four latches but it will keep it high and dry . Nothing better than leather as the man says and saddle soap and good coat of duck back to protect it should help that.

Place the rifle in a large, black, plastic hefty garbage bag. It works 100% of the time. It’s cheaper than the $25.00 gizmo you use and in a pinch, it can be used as a poncho or compact hooch. Finally, it can be used to pick up the garbage city people leave behind.

1 tip.... never clean with snake or rod going through the barrel to the action/receiver bcuz u can damage the barrel crown.... always insert at the action and pull through the barrel.... if yr using a rod u have to drop the lever and remove the bolt from thr rear of the action And b careful not to get solvent in the action

So...i use WD40 on my boots. They are real leather, steel toe boots. It waterproofs them wonderfully. If they are put together with glue don't use it. It is only a thought but you might try waterproofing your scabbard with it. I waterproofed even my faux leather shoes. It DOES keep my feet dry. Just don't use it on anything glued. Separates the glue. Does not help if water enters the top of the shoe\boot though.

All of the tools of the trade are important or we wouldn’t carry it. We depend on them. Some people are better at keeping their tools maintained than others. But I’m guessing as a rule there are more people in your line of work that take care of their tools then you’ll find in the general population. Because life & health depend on it. I just shake my head when I see someone with something that at one time was a nice tool but has been neglected to the point you could not depend on it to function.

To further illustrate your point about the capability of a 45/70 at long range, here is a guy shooting it at a target a mile away. (He doesn't hit it, but how close he gets means that 1000 yards and within are more than reasonable distances with this round.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/poHbnaKFod-goKM
