In the desert Southwest, one would have cold water by filling an olla (unglazed pottery) and setting it in the shade. The water permeates the clay and sweats on the outside. Evaporation of that sweat cools the pot and water.

I know the US cavalry mandated that troopers keep their canteen on their person rather than the horse in case they became separated in combat.

I heard that this was probably in response to troopers hanging their canteen on the horse, thus causing the issues.

I lived in Texas my entire life and for most of it I've had an old WWII canteen my old man bought me when I was a kid, sure it's a bother slung on you when you're working out the heat but you'd rather have water than not . Never known her work with the cowboy that didn't carry his own water and I assumed it was always been that way

The process of making coffee purifies any water they find, though. Those old westerns take place before every lake and river was full of chemical pollutants. Harder to find water in the desert but not impossible.

Thanks again Santee & Co . I've carried water in various modern containers . One of my favorites is a Nalgene bottle . I've saved some mylar bags that came full of coffee from joints like Duncan Donuts and Starbucks , and some collapsible plastic tea containers that come from KFC . Off topic , Yesterday the boys and I had a gun range day on a friend's private land . I fed his horse some celery and we ate campfire chili for lunch . I think the horse loved the celery as much as we enjoyed the chili . I shot my 1911A1 10mm Automatic pistol for the first time . The 10 mm Automatic has some punch . I sighted my Bergara B14 .308 Winchester rifle too . I shot a four round group that showed three holes touching and one just a hair away . I wish you could have been here .

I like the repro Civil War "bullseye" canteen. A guy at a gun show had an original Span-Am period canteen stenciled "2nd W. V. Vol. Inf." but the pewter spout was broken off. I looked it up and the 2nd West Virginia infantry was still in a training camp in Pennsylvania when the war ended and they'd only volunteered for the war with Spain, so they were discharged rather than sent to the Philippines. The guy who had the canteen was from Pa. so that makes sense! I'll bet Bannerman's was selling surplus Civil War, Indian War, and Span-Am War canteens into the 1930s! 👍😎 P.S.- I've actually seen an 1862 model "Bullseye" canteen that was dug out west at a post-war frontier Cavalry fort ....so we know that one would be period and correct...

Another awesome video, Santee! Canteens were carried by my ancestor crossed the States, one for him and the dog. As that was important, what was more important is knowing the location of water and the water trails travellers used, and what time to travel. He stated that he rested during the day when he can and travelled at night time to conserve water. However, there was plenty travellers around who could spare some water. Canteens used to get hot during the day, and drinking very warm water wasn't pleasant to drink from. There was a cloth covering the nozzle to stop his lips from injury. Good video Santee!

Are you carrying water in that canteen or hooch? Maybe lemonade like WC Fields. I have a smaller canteen and a linen canvas water sack. I also bought an old Forrest Service canteen that is two quarts. It is plastic lined but you can't see it. Covered the orange side panels with wool. Even in the north where there is a lot of water, it has to be filtered or boiled first so it's easier just to carry drinking water.

Still a problem in any Military today. I used to carry four litres, about a gallon, on me and more in the pack, and hydrated whenever and wherever I could. Still do, old habits die hard.

@@ArizonaGhostriders thanks and your welcome. Today I’m also getting inspiration from Mario fan theories/lore, Zelda fan theories/lore and the Backrooms/liminal spaces and abandoned places. I created a species of ghost entities for my story/series known as spectrals. Is that a good name for species of ghost entities? What do you think of the name of the leader of the ghost species that I’m probably going to not use: Boo jangles , leader of the spectrals? Is that not a very good name and I should probably choose a better more scarier name?

Were empty beer, liquor, and wine, bottles repurposed for carrying water in the Old West? If so, how often (e.g. could one go to a saloon and request any empty bottles they have)?
@ArizonaGhostriders
@ArizonaGhostriders Жыл бұрын
I suppose you could certainly do that. Maybe cover it with cloth or wicker to protect it.

The real question is how did outlaws on the run clean the water, did they have to boil or no? Or were there more clean springs back then?
@ArizonaGhostriders
@ArizonaGhostriders 3 ай бұрын
They could stop at wells or use river water. If there was questionable water they could boil it.

Another great video! Thank you. I know “thermoses” weren’t a thing yet but what about options for carrying something warm? I work in a Victorian living history village up north and it would be helpful to have something to knock off the ice that doesn’t break character.

There's no telling how many tourist and snowbirds have died of dehydration in the desert with either no canteen OR a canteen full of water. In places like Arizona you don't let yourself get thirsty. Drink water and drink it a lot.
