In the desert Southwest, one would have cold water by filling an olla (unglazed pottery) and setting it in the shade. The water permeates the clay and sweats on the outside. Evaporation of that sweat cools the pot and water.

Thanks again Santee & Co . I've carried water in various modern containers . One of my favorites is a Nalgene bottle . I've saved some mylar bags that came full of coffee from joints like Duncan Donuts and Starbucks , and some collapsible plastic tea containers that come from KFC . Off topic , Yesterday the boys and I had a gun range day on a friend's private land . I fed his horse some celery and we ate campfire chili for lunch . I think the horse loved the celery as much as we enjoyed the chili . I shot my 1911A1 10mm Automatic pistol for the first time . The 10 mm Automatic has some punch . I sighted my Bergara B14 .308 Winchester rifle too . I shot a four round group that showed three holes touching and one just a hair away . I wish you could have been here .

I like the repro Civil War "bullseye" canteen. A guy at a gun show had an original Span-Am period canteen stenciled "2nd W. V. Vol. Inf." but the pewter spout was broken off. I looked it up and the 2nd West Virginia infantry was still in a training camp in Pennsylvania when the war ended and they'd only volunteered for the war with Spain, so they were discharged rather than sent to the Philippines. The guy who had the canteen was from Pa. so that makes sense! I'll bet Bannerman's was selling surplus Civil War, Indian War, and Span-Am War canteens into the 1930s! 👍😎 P.S.- I've actually seen an 1862 model "Bullseye" canteen that was dug out west at a post-war frontier Cavalry fort ....so we know that one would be period and correct...

Another awesome video, Santee! Canteens were carried by my ancestor crossed the States, one for him and the dog. As that was important, what was more important is knowing the location of water and the water trails travellers used, and what time to travel. He stated that he rested during the day when he can and travelled at night time to conserve water. However, there was plenty travellers around who could spare some water. Canteens used to get hot during the day, and drinking very warm water wasn't pleasant to drink from. There was a cloth covering the nozzle to stop his lips from injury. Good video Santee!
