During my time in the military, I found this to be a fact all over the world: "The best food is often found in the worse bars ". Same goes for street food. The worse the neighborhood, the better the street food.

Man...hearing the term "Western Theme Park" brings back memories...when I was a kid and growing up we had "Ghost Town in the Sky" in North Carolina not but 2ish hours away from where I lived..got some old beta max camcorder tapes of family outings there still..need to get those transferred to DVD at some point. Sadly place shut down years ago..there have been rumors off and on of somebody trying to bring it back over the years but they never go anywhere.. sadly there aren't any close to me anymore and the only one I know about is Frontier Town in MD...which is quite a bit out of my travel budget right now...especially since it's a 10 hour drive from my home.

Ah, the Cantina! They're still around in various places where folks from south of the border can congregate, drink and eat real food from down home. A few years ago while teaching a CPR class to the Coast Guard Auxiliary we broke for lunch. Where to for lunch? I was pointed to the boarded up convenience store next door with a sign that said The Happy Donkey. That placed is closed I said. Oh no it is not I was told. So I walk in and thought I'd stepped into a local's drinking establishment in Tijuana. O.K., when in Rome, do as the Romans and be very respectful of other cultures and communities. On the other hand, I'm walking in with four gentleman dressed in blue fatigues and bloused boots. Crap, they're going to think we're ICE and poison our food! But, all was well and the food was very good at the Happy Donkey, a modern Cantina.

Up until the late 1960s here in Ireland ordinary women would generally not go into a bar, and there was a snug, a separate small area, with seats and tables, and its own door, which women would be able to have a drink, but usually older women. Ordinary women only drank alcohol in hotels. To be honest, I think that's why gastro pubs have taken off in such a big way, because even in the 1990s women would stay at tables and rarely approach the bar, and always come into a pub as part of a larger group with male family members in attendance. It was more of a social barrier than a legal one. I never really thought about it before until now. I never even noticed enough to think about it.

0:53 "Mexican influence", he says. Call and raise. That particular pic is of an Andalusian (southern Spain) old (XVI-XVII century) cantina.(You know because they are dressed and armed in the period fashion) . Which is relevant because traditional (XIX century) Mexican cantina decorations is deliberately reminiscent of those old Andalusian ones. Those valentones would look out of place among some charros, but the cantina itself would be almost undistinguishable. How cool is that?

Mexican can be Spanish, German, Native American, etc...so there you have it. Any painting of those would suit.

I take it the cat houses also varied in both scale and clientele. That should make an entertaining historical topic.

So very informatively interesting, and inspiring video, I really liked and enjoyed it. Great job and well done keep up the great work, I learned a lot about cantinas in the old west. I got a ton of inspiration for the old West inspired interactive fiction/unfiction story/series I’m working on writing. My old West inspired story/series is going to be a FPS (first person shooter)action adventure game in book form, it’s basically a game book of sorts. I’m definitely going to be adding a cantina and saloon to my story.

My great grandfather was born in Tucson in 1877 , 1st Gen from Sonora . Crazy to think he was there when Wyat and the boys handled business at the old depot house. Romero is a popular name down there, my relations in the old Pueblo run deep. Did not know about the Sap drink, I’d like to try it! Nice video Santee

Another excellent video, Santee! All my ancestor never mentioned a cantenia, he did mention in the places he stayed at, there were places children weren't allowed to go near, and were full of men. One time he tried to have a look inside, and was chased away forcefully. Men were stationed around the entrance and rear. Very excellent video Santee!
