With the starting price of the Miata having doubled since it was introduced 30 years ago (29% above the price increase for its class, and 40% above the industry as a whole) it is slowly being turned into a niche vehicle when decades ago it was a car accessible to everybody. The same thing happened to the Mustang.

@@emotionz3 Well, it was a tad over 30k and worth every penny. What hasn’t double in price in 30 years. And the build quality of cars has easily quadrupled in 30 years. I’ve got a 91 mustang lx convertible v8 manual that you’d swear was put together with wood screws. It rattles, flexes and has zero crash safety. I still love it, but you can’t compare it’s build quality or safety to a modern car. We all want better built cars but bitch when the price goes up. 🤷

This is a big one for me. While most of the comments will be car guys bemoaning progress because they just want to cling to the past, there is plenty of repair nonsense that exists solely because big companies want to feed repair shops and part sales. At this point there should have been innovations in things as simple as changing oil that doesn't require a jack or more intuitive fluid indicators/filter replacements that require little to no knowledge to replace (easy as they are). One of the most eco-friendly things one can do is make cars run as long as possible to reduce waste on that front. Smarter regulations of course go without saying. As cars get smarter and accidents decrease, we can probably loosen up on some outdated safety standards that have increased the weight of cars for impact protection (and increase fuel economy/decrease cost) in the process, while implementing new regulations that standardize ease of repair/maintenance/longevity features (queue reflexive 'deregulation is the magic pixie dust that will cure all ills' crowd).

Banks/lenders are certainly more than happy to help someone commit financial suicide these days. Leasing or uber-long term loans (60, 72, 84 months...) are not only possible, but considered perfectly acceptable and encouraged in many circles. I do believe ultimately the individual is responsible for making that decision, but my goodness, we are surrounded by messaging that openly encourages debt, especially with the justification 'but interest rates are so low'. Debt is still debt and must be treated with apprehensive respect.

I think it really depends on the brand you’re buying from. The luxury brands are especially bad because they basically expect the people who buy their cars to want a new one within 3 years. Brands like Honda, Toyota, and Hyundai still offer plenty of affordable cars that with proper upkeep can and should last for 10-15 years at minimum.
@MrSchn3ll
@MrSchn3ll 3 жыл бұрын
That's the biggest flaw with this "green" nonsense. Creating a car itself is a hugely pollutant and energy rich process. And batteries are not disposable and don't last 30+ years like well maintained engine. It will end up a rental car system - "you will own nothing and be happy". It's like the classic mechanical watch vs. Apple watch debate. One will be worn for decades and cherished, while the other will be in a landfill in 2 years - no one wanting to be caught dead wearing it. I think the industry is going to get pushback, and the crooked politicians will be forced to roll back some of these mandates when they realize that not everyone wants an EV and cars languish on lots.

I feel you on this. I remember when my sister had an old Mercedes C230 Coupe. One day, I took it out on a windy hill-side road and decided to see what it would feel like to turn the traction control off. So I did, and the moment the rear tires broke loose and the rear-end came around, I thought I was going to die. I was able to get it back under control and immediately turned traction control back on. Now, I have an M340i, a car with well over double the power, and turning off the traction control doesn't feel scary. The car just sorts everything out if you lose the rear-end, and you're back on-line. It's strange how in roughly 20 years, our cars have gotten insanely powerful, but yet the drama has been completely drained from them. I guess manufacturers had to do that because people want more power in their cars, but they also want a car that isn't going to kill them as soon as they push it too hard.... And here we are today... with cars that have so many electronic nannies keeping us safe that even when you turn them all off, the car is still working to keep you safe. On one hand, I'm super happy that we have such insanely fast cars, but on the other hand, they don't feel special. That's a difficult thing for me to say because I absolutely adore my M340i. But is it the best driver's car I've ever owned? Unfortunately... no. That title goes to my 2015 Mazda 3 Hatchback with a 2.0L 155 HP engine, which was not even close to fast, but each time I took a corner, I got the biggest grin on my face because of how rewarding it was to drive. It pains me to say that a nearly 400 HP BMW is "less fun" (in a corner) to drive than 155 HP Mazda. And I'll be completely honest. When my lease is up on my M340i, I might just choose to buy it. While it's not the most fun I've ever had in a car, it is an absolutely fantastic car and probably one of the last cars before the full-hybrid or EV revolution takes over. That fact actually makes it special in its own right. It's funny how that works...

Careers are a joke. You spend so much time and energy trying to get ahead in a company that gives no shits about you and will drop you at a moment's notice as soon as their balance sheet deems it necessary. You live 1 time and I highly doubt anyone will care about anything career related when you're gone. Why sacrifice your passion for that? Just in my lifetime I've seen the world change so radically and rapidly that I can't bring myself to cater to anyone's agenda other than my own. The IC engine isn't going anywhere for 2 reasons. 1) The Global Electrical Grid cannot handle 100% EV ownership. CA can barely handle 10%. 2) Gasoline is a byproduct of Oil Refining. If it's not blown up in engines, it has to be discarded another way. Oil isn't going anywhere considering its necessary for plastics.
@ReallyRyan.
@ReallyRyan. 3 жыл бұрын
By the time you're able to drive the car space will be a completely different place. The combustion engine is a wasteful, inefficient, old dinosaur that just needs to go because it's killing the environment and has been for too long, along with factories and other big polluters and things need to change. Cars are changing especially quickly because of the more urgent threat of climate change and stricter government regulations on auto manufacturing. Things need to be done and done now, otherwise the world is literally going to end up lifeless not that long from now. You may think engine noise is cool and everything, especially because you're a kid, but the fate of the world is far, far more important than how exciting you think something is. The Porsche research is interesting, but I wouldn't put all your eggs into that basket because it's still in the conceptual/testing phase and we don't actually know if it'll pan out to be anything more than just an interesting concept. Electric's here now, it's proven reliable and that's what manufacturers are going with moving forward. When you buy your first car, don't be surprised if it has to be electric or a hybrid because, as I said, the car space will be very different. It may suck in your eyes, but like it or not, that's just how it is.

I have thought the same exact thing. We saw this happen in the industry I work in (computers) as well. The soul is being sucked out for streamlined and highly-integrated utilities. I got really into automotive in 2018 after watching all of Initial D (yes you can laugh at me). I decided I want to get myself a performance car. I didn't know how to drive a manual, so I borrowed a 1999 Ford Escort ZX from my brother to learn on. I took it out driving every day after work. After about 6 months, I went out and bought a 2019 Civic Type R. I still own it, and I plan on keeping it forever, but I noticed right away just how much the game had changed. I actually felt safe in my Type R.. but I also felt more disconnected. The Escort was a death trap, but it was also connected and fun. The immediacy of the throttle made it feel like a roller coaster at times. The Type R doesn't have that. I missed the manual hand brake. I missed the light-weight feel of the Escort. I saw the trend immediately as I entered the modern world of enthusiast automotive and it is sad to see how it is progressing. The soul is leaving.

My guess is they wither and die. M176 R is absolutely right. There was a time when farmers and country veterinarians played polo and raced horses with the rich and privileged. That is all but gone as land is gobbled up for endless development or locked away as forever wild. The automotive hobbyist is the next domino to fall.

We have a few kids running our current series ranging from late teens to mid-20s who do exactly that. Or you can buy a Focus ST for under $20k, and have a daily driver that's a good cone dodger. Then there's drag racing: A few years back, my son and two of his friends built a bracket racer from a junked S10 and junkyard parts. Total outlay was under $2000, and they sold it for 3x that after the season. The dad of one his friends gave them some tips. He was a good source of info, his Camaro runs Hellcat ETs for under $5000. Even road racing is attainable: I did a WRL endurance race in a 1st gen RX7 that cost $2500, (yes, that's the right number of 0s) complete with safety equipment and a log book. I've built and sold a road race BMW for $7000.

But given how things have been going lately, I'm thinking more about keeping the Si long term (what a great daily driver--all kinds of fun and zero guilt piling on the miles) and instead getting something else on the side as my next purchase as a project/fun car--while you can still get in to something at a reasonable price. But I'm going to start with taking the Si out to an HPDE to understand the limitations of the platform and better understand what I might be looking for to augment in the future. Btw, because you made such a thoughtful and intelligent/frugal bang-for-the-buck "sport" purchase, you also owe yourself a 2nd set of summer tires and maybe some Acuity shifter bits some day 👍

With my EV I joyfully floor it at every stop sign and green light without a care in the world, no matter the location or time of day, and it's hella fun. Plus, it's not totally silent. The high price of new cars/slightly used really seems to be intentionally pushing people towards leasing. Putting people on a path to have to buy a new car every 3-4 years. Which honestly feels very similar to how people generally approach phone/laptop purchases. Generally you can get 3 solid years out of the product, but after that your much more at risk for issues you cannot afford and the product being outdated. Personally, I'm most bummed about the opportunity to own something with a v8 that's under 100k. The options in that market keep getting slimmer...

My cheap V8 Ford Panther platform cars have always been my affordable way to enjoy a reliable V8. It's not going to be fast, but I bought a 2008 Grand Marquis last year in quite good condition, 97k miles for $4200. Similar Grand Marquis are now being listed for $8500 around me. I had a guy offer to buy it at a gas station. My Crown Vics and last Grand Marquis never got compliments but now the Grand Marquis gets more attention than my 2003 MR2 Spyder. It's really shocking. Anyways, if someone posts a Panther platform car for a good deal, that's one to scoop up.

Yup, and the car is basically becoming the phone and laptop with all the computer stuff in it. I use me stuff until it absolutely does. Had an iPhone 5s until last year and only got a new one because the car I got would not pair to a phone that old. That was my first new car in 12 years. Hoping to keep stuff like that going as long as I can but with all the computer chips it will be harder and harder. Then we will move from leasing to just all ubering and no one owning cars, self driving cars that pick you up and take you out then bring you home. That’s the ultimate future sadly

I’d make the argument that people just want more and more features along with the desire for bigger vehicles, not really that the cars themselves are getting that much more expensive. A decently equipped 2021 Mazda3, Civic, or Corolla is light years ahead and very comparable in size to a 2005 Honda Accord, yet their original MSRPs are still comparable. Now you get a standard full safety suite, dual zone automatic climate control, a nice infotainment, and what would’ve been luxury car refinement back in 2005. Nowadays, everyone wants HUDs, 25” infotainment screens, cooled seats, nicer leather, pano sunroofs, 20” wheels, and 360 cameras, in the form of a 3 Row SUV or Pick Up truck.

@@panzer_TZ Absolutely agree. People compare model names without realizing how much those models have grown and how they're equipped. A Civic or Corolla of 25 years ago was smaller than a modern Accent or Versa, similarly powered (low, by modern standards), and with an interior of similar quality. Even so, the modern cars will be safer, more efficient, and have infotainment features previously inimagined. They will likely last just as long and be about as reliable. OK, they won't be as fin to drive as the best late-90s cars, but a Corolla or Escort of that era wasn't any fun, either.

Great Video, thank you! Can i say that this video nearly brought me to tears? It describes a way, i feel since about last year. To suddenly realize, that....this Era of "living for/with cars", seems to stop. Not slowly fade out, no... but about to stop very soon. I appreciate my vehicles more and more every day, how well or "bad" they drive, just because it´s still real! I guess i was lucky enough to somewhat get the cars that i wanted, the cars and motorcycles i fell in love for. But not nearly all i would really want AS WELL. For me it would be having a car of about every category, something like a open-wheeler (Caterham,...), 2 JDM Cars, a great daily (like a Lexus GS-F), a Ferrari, a US Oldtimer for example and so on. Just so to have a example of everything the car world has to offer. A time capsule, to other times so to say. Feeling the Era´s just by driving a certain car of that time. Most of the newer drivers probably won´t even get to their "normal" dream cars. That thought saddens me.. You can also see how JDM Cars like Skylines or Supras rise to values, what no one would´ve thought. It depresses me, to realize, that i can not obtain (buy) any other (dream-)car in time. Either there would be none left, or expensive as hell (and probably no more parts around). That´s a hard pill to swallow.. Anyway, have a nice day everyone, and appreciate the stuff we (can) have now! People, cars, etc. They won´t be here forever. Greetings from Austria

Of course demand is so high for the C8s that the factory can't really keep up even as it moves into the third model year. But that is a new car: what is even crazier is that prices for C7s have skyrocketed and I see listings for C6s like mine that are considerably higher than I paid for it six years ago. I think used Porsche prices have gone nuts too. Does this mean the desperation, the existential sportscar angst, that SG describes so well here is actually widespread?

This was a great video. One thing you mentioned but did not call out is the Safety aspect. You said it the passion has been sucked out of the cars of today and in the future. This is the fact that most people do not know how to handle or drive their cars anymore. The manufacturers have to overcompensate for the lack of BASIC talent. This I believe has to do more with the crossover market that to me is like buying a toaster or refrigerator. It is an appliance that is passionless, for the most part. Like everything else we all will look back and have great memories of the sound, the feel, the look of our OLD/NEW cars. Thanks for the video. Keep doing the videos I appreciate you both and your channel.

This is exactly why I picked up a STI last year. The -- not to overuse the term -- visceral and raw nature of that older power train is so much fun and tangible. I have seen Mr. Geese's take on the STI platform here and I get that it is an old platform and isn't for everybody. For me, the AWD, all-weather capabilities married with the rawness of the experience and the retention of knobs and physical controls for the head unit and HVAC make it a great experience. I do wish that I didn't have to get rid of my 2001 Integra GS-R Sedan (god, I loved that MT and the high revs), but space dictated one vehicle. I don't know how a 170hp and low torque four banger can be so much fun, but the B18C1 was a joy to operate. I was also starting to run into the parts issue for the Integra and living in the mid-Atlantic, the corrosion factor was not kind to a 19 year old daily driven vehicle. I would have had to have dumped a bunch of money into that car to restore it.

Same. Managed to get my dream car (MR2 Spyder) a couple years ago and have been putting so much money into it in new OEM gaskets, seals, bolts, studs, fresh nuts, a fresh windshield, headlights covers, fresh caliper covers... the list goes on, all to keep it living healthy so I can continue to enjoy it as I age. I could afford it two years ago at 5K, but I already see them listed for 12K and above on the usual pages. Need to get a daily just to take the daily strain off what will hopefully be the car I drive until I die, but I see everything old and affordable steadily rising beyond my means.

The cost of cars is actually surprisingly stable when adjusting for inflation. We're getting hit with increasing costs for housing, healthcare, and education that are outpacing inflation. The thing that isn't keeping up is wages. Being squeezed makes it very hard to decide to have a 'play' car.

Democrat politicians have been pushing for minimum wage increases because they know INFLATION would expose their decision making. (Spend more than they collect, continue to borrow & print money that doesn't exist). So on paper you received a raise. But because of inflation thanks to irresponsible politicians, the "raise" had little to no effect. It's a SCAM.

Yep. It drives me nuts when I see the "Fun cars are too expensive now" argument. Fun cars have ALWAYS been expensive. I bought my 2000 Civic Si new for $17,500 in the year 2000. Adjusted for inflation it would cost over $27,000 in 2021. Today MSRP for a new Civic Si is right around $25,000.

Mark, I can't overstate how future laws, especially on the local level, will impact which vehicles you will be able to buy. Through legislation, your choice of future vehicles could be severely limited, making the year 2021 look like the good old days.
