I think they were actually playing Tom Petty's song! Back in the 80s, a lot of tv shows would have guys do generic covers to avoid copyright payments. Either way, Knight Rider was one of my favourite shows as a kid. And it was all the cool car, and the neat voice to it. I always pretended that it was really built by good Cylons (I was also a Battlestar Galactica fan, and the red light scanner reminded me of their "eyes")

I was thinking the same thing! I'm pretty sure that's the Petty version. I did some quick reading and Petty made a huge mistake in the late 70s signing the publishing rights to his songs away to the recording studio and for a while there was a court battle involving rights, bankruptcy, etc. MCA/Universal ended up buying his distributor, signing Petty but I think MCA Universal still had the publishing rights to this song, not Petty. Knight Rider was produced by Universal so perhaps they got this track for free or paid Petty the writing fee which is what they'd pay for a cover tune. My favorite covers they used were Gimme Shelter and Every Breath You Take. They're both done so well that if you weren't specifically paying attention you might be tricked into thing it was the Rolling Stones or The Police.
