Today J investigates the claim that Cars actually stole its plot from the oft-forgotten 1991 Michael J. Fox film, Doc Hollywood. Could this be possible? How similar are they REALLY?!

1) super interesting comparison. 2) I know you didn’t discover this, but I’m willing to bet you’re the first to cover it in that level of detail and with video clips to back it up in this format. 3) I really respect that you explained the elements that do NOT match at the end. Shows a healthy objectivity, and KZbin incentivizes polarization and strong black&white statements so much that seeing someone point out the gray is pretty refreshing.

Honestly, every Pixar movie steals some previous ideas but does there own unique thing with it very well which is what makes the movies great. With that being said, I wouldn’t go as far as calling other Pixar movies ripoffs (other than maybe A Bug’s Life), but this one does seem to be a ripoff of Doc Hollywood. Ripoff or not though, this was my favorite childhood film and I still love it to this day.

I’ve heard about this claim before from other creators, but I never realized just how close these two movies are in terms of plot structure. So with this in mind, yeah I can understand why many people don’t like the original Cars movie. But that still doesn’t change the fact that I love the movie for personal reasons. Besides, Doc Hollywood’s story in it of itself isn’t unique. There are lots of other stories before and after it that have the same general premise and plot.

Before watching the video, I'll say Cars doesn't have much original in it. The basic plot is pretty much what you see in movies like Doc Hollywood, Sweet Home Alabama, etc. Even the 80's movie, Take This Job And Shove It did this. As for the anthropomorphizing of vehicles, that's not new either. I remember an old short where a taxi cab has a son that wants to be a hot rod. However, reusing concepts is older than Hollywood and doesn't constitute a ripoff.

Joking (somewhat) aside, not surprising that there is a movie x that Cars is similar to. I seem to recall thinking when i watched Cars that there were several movies with similar plots (the whole city boy gets forced into a small town but eventually falls in love with the rural simplicity). In fact i seem to recall there is one that matches Cars a bit more to the letter (like the MC is legit kept in prison in a small town but keeps trying to escape during community service).

Dances with Wolves, Pocahontas and The Last Samurai are also very similar though Ferngully is the most similar.

I don't know what it is, but talking vehicles really appeal to kids. I remember when I was young, I loved JJ the Jet Plane, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Bob the Builder for their talking vehicles

a bug's life was the first film about Intelligent anophamorohic insects. Inside out wasn't the first about characters with a character. Finding Nemo was first about intelligent anophamorohic fish Ratatouille wasn't the first about anophamorohic rodents. Monsters inc was first about monsters coming to life . The incredibles wasn't first about lives of super heroes. Was toys story the first about living toys

Um ... this was a thought all of us "of a certain age" had in real time watching Cars in the theater. Most of us assumed this was intentional.

Yup, as indicated this was a common observation at the time. It was quite clearly the inspiration they borrowed from quite heavily, streamlining away a few extraneous characters and making it little-kid-friendly.

Anybody else notice that Iron Man 3 and Descendants 3 borrowed the plot of Incredibles 1? Or that Iron Man 2 and the Steven Universe movie are also quite similar? Or that Mean Girls is basically a retelling of the Star Wars prequels (but with a happy ending)? Thankfully, the similarities in their stories don't prevent us from enjoying these movies!
