Great review, close competition. Have had hybrid Tucson since July and done about 7000k’s. So far a great car and averaged around 6.1. Fun to drive, great tech and has a good amount of rush when needed.

If features and tech are top of mind, probably go for the Tucson. But if you want to save more money long term, the RAV4 is the one for you. Although it's a tie in fuel economy, your biggest loss during ownership will always be depreciation. The RAV4's resale value is second to none thanks to Toyota's sterling brand reputation. I'd pick the one that leaves more money in my pocket.

I'd stay away from any Hyundai gas engines. They are notorious for burning oil after 50k. Even Hyundai themselves acknowledge this to the point that they said 1 liter of burned oil per 1500 km is considered normal. Just sold my 2017 tucson and replaced it with a Rav4 PHEV. My 2017 tucson was a 2.0 non turbo burns 1 liter/1000 km. Imagine how much a turbo engine would be consuming after 5 years. Hyundai is about bells and whistles but Toyota is about reliabilty. Imagine the Prius that came out more than 10 years ago that is using the system as these Rav4 Hybrids are still rolling on the roads with no problems.

Resale value sounds good now however 7 to 8 years from now reality is different. I was shopping for a Rav4 PHEV the last couple of months and my in very good shape Prius V with 194000km has only an 8000 trade value or less offered from many different dealers. We ended up buying the Hyundai Tuscon Ultimate PHEV and the discount on it was generous. Just could not see the almost 200 dollars per month over 84 months difference, and waiting the year plus for the Rav4 PHEV to come in at which time our Prius would probably fetch around 6 grand! That's with the extended warranty included in the price 8 years or 160000km, ceramic paint protection, rust module and 7 year unlimited milage tire and wheel coverage which was figured into both vehicles for comparison. We will of course see how the long term ownership of the Hyundai Tucson goes! Time will tell.

We're talking about a topic that doesn't even have basic information about cars from 10 years ago to 5 years ago. Hyundai Motor is the only automaker that makes all kinds of transmissions and electric car parts by itself. There were many Japanese fanboys in Japan 20 years ago that said Panasonic and Sony had better quality than Korean Samsung and LG Electronics' televisions, but now there is not a single human being on the planet who says that. Currently, Japanese home companies are no longer able to make TVs or just getting parts and assembling them from Samsung or LG in Korea. It's only natural that Japanese companies without electric car technology will soon shrink to a large number. Comparing Hyundai Motor with Japanese cars five years ago 10 years ago is a pointless pun.

We're new Tucson Limited HEV owners. Absolutely everybody we talked to on either being repeat Hyundai owners or Rav owners loved their cars. The Rav is a bit dated at this point and hopefully the refresh ( next year?) will do it justice. Now it's just kinda frumpy in comparison to the competition. We didn't personally care for the Rav's road noise and ride. True, Toyota builds awesome HEVs. We were actually on the fence with the new Crown Signia and the Tucson. The CS is beautiful, but Toyota did strange things with it in the debut year. Strangely out of touch. Both companies could learn a lot from one another.

As an owner of a top spec X-trail epower that’s done 13k with majority being Sydney suburban conditions with approx 30% of those km at highways speeds, I believe that it will compete very well against both of these cars. For me it’s sitting on 6.3l/100km over its life thus far. Before I get flamed by RAV4 owners, resale value means nothing to me and nor servicing costs which will be in line with the Hyundai. Let’s see a match up of X-trail against either or both of these.

I cannot recommend a hyundai. Toyota's ECVT is a tank and never breaks. The engine is dual injection which means less to no carbon buildup. The touchscreen climate control kills any car for me. The rav4 doesn't have panoramic moonroof is a bummer. HUDs are a gimmick, but so is the digital rear view mirror. You want one? just buy a mirror dashcam with backup camera and u get one urself, it's 70$ on amazon I had that in my old civic. From a reliability standpoint, Hyundai just doesn't cut it, no matter whatever review says - toyotas are beasts and will continue to be. I wont be the person putting 50K of my hard earnt cash to gamble on a Korean car that may become 0 in less than 10 years. Just no. I understand where the host is coming from but not looking into the mechanical side of things is a huge missed opportunity for me. You've got to talk about reliability and longevity that's the #1 consideration for me. Disclaimer - picked up rav 4 xle premium hybrid after 2.5 years waiting in Canada.

when I rented a Tucson gas powered car, it would get as low as 19 mph around town. It was a pathetic gas pig. average mileage was 27 mpg (including freeway). I would hope the hybrid is much better. But if the around town miles are too crappy, it brings the whole mpg down quite a bit, as I had been getting up to 32 mpg in the regular Tucson, but after figuring in around town miles, the mpg were 27, which is to say is pathetic.
