I still say a 90° intake elbow facing forward will help and they could just put a short like 12" fairly stiff hose on the reduced outlet and use that to steer the boat like a proper jet steering and ditch the rudder

Actually you'd need a smoother intake, the angles slow down the water flow because you end up getting water hammering at the corner. You'd want to make the intake a smooth incline ( on the output too)

Ok, I've seen it said and it seems like a good idea to put a 90 on the intake facing forward, maybe add a vacuum cleaner wide nozzle to get more shovel effect on the water when moving. In true old cars and cameras fashion though, that thing needs a true jet ski motor. Half janky and scary as hell, true entertainment. Keep up the great ideas guys.

Awesome project, a ton of fun to watch. I'd say keep this as V1, but definitely build a V2 with a sleeker design (more like a canoe), bigger engine, ram style intake that's more flush with the boat bottom, heavily reduced outtake (like a 3 or 4:1 ratio), a different style, bigger pump (if you can find one) that's more inline with less turns, use the outlet to steer (flexible tubing or something), and a solid priming system (if necessary). Definitely keep the budget theme, but get the parts you need to make it sweet

Thicker pipe provides more protection if/when the jank impeller comes apart doing 7k RPM C.) 4" SCH 40 sewage pipe and fittings are readily available at any hardware store. Even real jet ski pumps have a wear ring that shrouds the impeller from the pump housing to keep cavitation at the edges of the impeller from eating away the housing itself.

I agree. I would open up the intake more to prevent the cavitation. Thinking an open box secured to the floor with a screen or bars to protect it. This would feed into a duct or hose into the inlet. Maybe you can reclock the intake to fit accordingly. Quick example. Car stock intake air box with screen, with a hose leading to the pump. But built accordingly…? Or… ‘it’ll be fine’. 👍 Awesome shows. Keep up the great work.

Sweeping 90 degree elbows would be cool to see. Especially some sort of "scoop " for the intake to help shovel water in at speed. Might help with cavitation. I think so too. As far as I know, cavitation starts when pressure in the pump inlet / in front of the prop drops down too low and a like "ram air" inlet should move that point to higher rpms at speed so the pump can flow more water while absolut pressure out of the pump should rise too. maybe even with some kind of diameter extension in front of that one to increase that effect.

I think you should try a Venturi fitting on the discharge. Should be able to find one used for product agitation in AG sprayers. Reduces the discharge increasing pressure. The high pressure stream pulls surrounding water with it through a cone shaped nozzle. This greatly increases the discharge volume. They are pretty amazing

If you have cavitation problem that means that intake is to restrictive. Before you buy bigger pump put inlet at an angle towards the incoming water and make pipe angle towards the pump smaller. Like Ike said more Hp is useless beacuse you will keep running into cavitation. Every sharp bend drops the water pressure, also bigger pipe up to the pump will help.

There is epoxy you can put on impaler to protect it but it won't reduce the capacity of the pump cavitation is inevitable on pump no way to avoid it at the end any pump reving over 1800 rpm get eaten by rust or cavitation and need a new impaler.

At 22:39, you said your summer 2020 fun project....I too wish we could go back in time, lol😎 2. perhaps check junkyards or metal recyclers for a jetski drive system that can be had on the cheap? (Then that 25hp. motor frankecobbled to that?) 3. Bring the inlet side of the pump down about 3-5", then put a sweep 90deg. fitting - perhaps that will get the inlet below all that duckweed? Follow that with a 4"-2" reducer to collect more water under speed. 4. Sweeping bends and smooth transitions in size flow better, meaning more gph through that same pump. (I believe it is called Laminar flow???) 5. Go back to the nozzle diameter you used before the final modification, but make it a smoother transition (stack more reducers, with a with a 3" segment of pipe between) 6. Try a 2 inch pipe squished flat with a bit of heat to produce more flow with better pressure Men, thank you for the fantastical magnificent stuff you build! I like ot a lot! Keep em' comin!!!!

Guys, a "trash pump" is designed to pass small stones and trash without needing to split the pump case. Since some trash will always find a way to jam it, as you noticed, the front case is "dry gasketed" to be taken down and reset in the field. Also, it is usually an equal in and out size, and needs to be primed to start pumping. What you need is a "fire pump"- a pump that is designed for high discharge, usually will have a bigger inlet than discharge. It will not tolerate trash in the pump- get good screening- a few times the intake area and cover it with screen wire to limit/stop the weeds getting in. FWIW, I spent my career as a plumber- I speak pretty good pump. FR

Get a bag of copper sulfate from the co-op and sprinkle out there for the algae. Love the videos guys!!

Consider that the pump being upside down is also holding a certain amount of air that is not able to escape. Throttling up stirs that around and may be the cause of a lack of power feeling like cavitation. Maybe put a type of valve in the drain of the pump so you can release that air once its primed.

Drill a couple large holes in the side of that pump housing to give it more outlets for more thrust

Change the intake angle of the pump! A 45 or 30 degree or fitting with wider intake would help. On jet powered boats, the intake helps propel them through the water. Also for the prime, thread in a ball valve and 90 to take it over the side of the boat. It would make priming easier and faster

Maybe make some aquatic machines to take tidy the pond? Dredger, scummer(?), De-snaker(?) etc !! I wanna see some large mouth bass in that pond.

Keep it going, I'd say, this is geat. Find a cheap canoe, and fit the pump into that, even. Instead of a rudder, you could use a bit of flex pipe going to the reducer, and aim the stream in the direction you want, which is more like a regular jet boat.

Guys, I'm no nautical engineer but orifice size and shape will affect the output speed of the fluid going out. I'd also consider some kind of back flow preventer on the inlet side of the pump. doesn't have to be super complex or anything. A couple flaps of rubber that meet in the middle would probably work fairly good.

Would love to see more. Proper grate on induction side, paint job, you coul put runners either side of the induction and output put mesh over it all the way from front to back may help with the cavatation

Use a Swamp cooler fan, as a propeller. Box it up like a jet motor.

See if you can modify the pump to take a bigger intake! If she struggles you can slam a better engine on. If you cant mod it for a bigger pump, see if you can find a sub-$100 jetski for parts.

as well as the oft mentioned intake I'd also add a small diameter running bleed from the top of the pump to let the air out, if you can keep the pump fully wet it should work better.

Reducing drag in a small boat can make a huge difference. Sand a round edge to the front side of the rudder and cut/sand the back end meet with a sharp edge. Will make the boat much easier to control and isn't that hard to do with a power sander. Also at least blast a few coats of polyurethane if you won't fiberglass it. I would have the rudder run a bit deeper as well. Put some bondo glass around the water inlet and exhaust.
