Young you did good . I’m sure you used what you had and could afford at the time. We don’t all have a full workshops and every tool . I remember bolting any engine on some really dodgy vehicles that I could find when I was younger and if I could get it to power a wheel I was over the moon . No way near as involved as your old cart . Bet it will be great seeing your old project on here . Hope life’s treating you well 👍

Ike, by a general rule of thumb, injectors get constant voltage from ignition source however the trigger is via ground (meaning the ground is what is pulsed) if u put your test like clip on the POS batt post and probe the other wire on the injector you will see your pulse. That pulse comes from a cam position sensor of some sort on the engine.
@TDG2654
@TDG2654 Жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter whether you connect the testlight to battery positive or negative, it behaves the same. The way Ike had it connected the testlight lights up while the injector is off (positive power is supplied through the injector) and should turn off when the injector is on (ecu side of the injector is pulled to ground so there's no voltage difference across the testlight anymore). Connecting the light to battery positive just inverses it (light is off when the injector is off and on when the injector is on). My guess for the actual reason that it didn't work is because it's an incandescent based testlight, which just isn't fast enough for the short pulses the ecu uses at low load.

Kid did an excellent job. Least he wasn't laying on the couch with a game controller in his hand. I have a frame laying around that I'm waiting to give a young person I think will do something with it and be motivated to do so. This project reminds me of one my buddy was working on about 20 years ago. We were going to stuff my spare Kawasaki KZ650 motor in a home built project he bought. It was heavier built than this one, with a Beetle front suspension and independent rear sprung with 2 sets of motorcycle forks mounted over the rear axles. If he still had it, I know I could get it up and running! (My skill level has risen exponentially since then, having worked in 2 auto body shops, and of course, watching you guys!)

love these kinds of builds. brings back memories from high school where we used to just put any random running engine on basicly anything we want. just one thing id like to point out that you may want consider is to relocate the radiator. where its located right now and how hot that water temp can potentially reach id be very scared if one of those lines blow that it will dump scolding hot anti freeze right onto the driver.

I'm hoping they build a all new Rear Engine Sand Dragster with a huge sprocket on a very robust axle (thick with 4 bearings) with paddle tires and just one chain. It would be fun to throttle up in wet sand and have it lift you up as it dug in and hauled ass. Quick easy gear changes by replacing the front (engine) sprocket. No jackshaft, no belt, real o-ring chain, dump the clutch and rip.

I am SO EXCITED for this project. I own a 1999 Triumph Speed Triple 955 and its a handful. Your engine looks like a slightly later Sprint 955 model. The SAGEM FI system can be temperamental but works great when everything is setup correctly. There is a free software called TuneECU which you can use to connect with a phone or computer and read trouble codes, test operation, change the engine mapping, and make adjustments.

Nice. I used to race motorcycle engine race carts as a kid. The yankyness reminds me of those days. BTW, the blinking test light needs to be monitored on the ground side since that is the side that the computer is pulsing. Connect light to positive and the negative side of the injector instead of the positive to frame ground. I like this project......

The reason Ike’s test light wasn’t working is because the computer dosent send 12v to the injectors, they get constant 12v. The computer uses Pulse Width Modulation - and pulses a ground to the injector rather than a 12v source. This thing looks awesome guys.

I believe when Ike was using the test light to check for injector pulse with he was on the positive wire. Most injector pulse width signals are controlled via the negative side of the circuit to help minimize voltage and amperage spike in the circuit

Edit #1 ~ Now I've finished this I don't know if turning into a drag cart is so good unless you have the bucks to support such an adventure, and the there is the option of making it a fantastic dirt/rally/hill-climb/rock-climb something imho, then I thinking wtf, sand rail, but what ever the choices it needs some frame strength and a roll bar re-do at the least. Those injectors work on a contestant power circuit. with ground completing the circuit. requiring testing on the ground side of the injectors. or on a millivolt circuit. you would have to have a tester that would be compatible with a millivolt circuit. I would leave the configuration of the kart the way it is. it's already got slick's on it, you would just have to add some wheelie bars and would have an AWESOME wheel stander. although some of janky stuff would have to be taken care of for sure. that's still a really good score on that kart. depending on what you paid for it because it has some really good parts on it.

The front suspension has promise actually. A lot better welds then you all do. Just work it out and change the rack to something different. Reinforce the frame and finish the build. You do a sand rail and you will never use it. Or your going to tare it up going around the grand-Pri. Just reinforce what is there. The kid had the right idea, but probably did not have the correct tools to do the job right.

I had a '98 triumph trident 900. 100HP on about a 450lb bike. It was a rocket. I've waited for a while for you guys to play with an English triple.

Well, it wouldn't be a Triumph if it wasn't cranking over for hours before it reluctantly fired up... :P (and yes, I did see the random Charles moment with the 'lil bub in hand!!!)

Full credit to the kid that built this .. Yes, there are issues and it's a bit of a death trap, but for a kid and probably his first "big" build, not half bad really. The Ford Ranger front suspension is awesome!

Awesome find! The engine sounds very good. The oil looked clean, so hopefully no surprises. I think it may have just been aerated from overfilling and the engine being inclined. 🤞🏻. I definitely wouldn’t run it too much before confirming the oil pump pick-up is submerged, and not sucking air. Keep up the great vids, and I can’t wait to see more of it!

Sand rail is a great idea. And you can call it the sand dart. That thing is going to be wickedly fast.

That collection of bird welds and zip ties is gonna chuck one of you guys into the weeds at high speed if you ever get it running.

Very good start to a wild project, I had visions myself but not the tools, time, or finances.

Do that John! I got a kick out of Ike "unselling" his diagnostic tricks and it DID start! New lectrics and you and Isaac will finish figuring out how the front end for the BMW cart should have gone. Remember that the tie rod arm needs to be close to the length of the long axle- from wheel center to pivot center. It can be done with two long tie rods, one "master" from the end of the R&P to the far spindle steering arm. The other one goes from the other spindle steering arm to a point along the first steering tie rod- you need to put a pivot or ball joint point there for the second tie rod to work off of. Once you lay the pieces out , it will make sense. Ford did essentially that for their "Double Eye Beam", but used a three piece tie rod assembly- because they were going to use a recirculating ball steering box to operate it- it was the cheapest way to get there for Ford. Got to give the kid props for getting outside and doing something other than video games I know grown adults that couldn't do this.

Thank you guys for being encouraging about the kids build. Most kids won’t come out of the house to scratch their butt.
