My father was a GM employee. He was on a team of employees who were tasked with developing the heads-up display and push buttons on the steering wheel. I was a kid when the Cutlass was being developed. I remember him coming home and telling me about the cool tech on the car. I am so excited about this project. If you decide to sell it, I would love to buy it for my dad! It was a car he always wanted, but it was never in the cards for him.

Love that you love this car! Quick tip on the stalling condition; You may have fixed it with the ICM as they were prone to do that, but if the problem resurfaces it may actually be cold solder joints in the PCM. If you encounter the issue again, tap the PCM with the palm of your hand while it is running. If it alters the way the engine runs, the PCM needs replacement. If that happens, don't forget to take the PROM (some refer to it as MEMCAL) out of the original to swap into the new one. The palm tap test was actually issued by a GM service bulletin/service information. If I remember correctly, the PCM is on the passenger side frame rail, forward of the strut tower. If it's not there, it will be under the dash near the glovebox. Another place that liked to cause driveability issues was the intake gaskets. Due to the extreme angle of the intake to head surfaces, the intake bolts sometimes like to loosen up and the gasket will get damaged causing a vacuum leak. Lastly, when the oil pump drive seal leaks (if it doesn't now, it will!), you are supposed to remove the rear cylinder head to replace the seal for it. BUT!! If you get a Chevy 350 distributor gasket, scarf cut the gasket, slather the gasket with liquid teflon sealant, lift the oil pump drive up enough to get the distributor gasket around and under it, then seat the drive back down and tighten the clamp, it will solve the leak without head removal. The oil pump drive is under the throttle body and is where the distributor used to be on the old 2.8/3.1L carbureted or throttle body injected version of this engine. You will know it is leaking when there is oil all over the top of the transmission. Sincerely, ex-Oldsmobile dealer tech 1997-2001.

As a former 3.4 DOHC owner (93 Lumina Z34) before you do any more high RPM pulls, CHECK THE TIMING BELT. 60-100k miles is when they give up, and even though it's technically a non-interference engine, with any wear the valves can kiss. Then it's a way bigger problem. Save yourself the head and heart ache. Check the timing belt!

@@roberthartmann782 You would think, but every other 60° V6 from GM is timing chain. The 3.4 DOHC is kind of the black sheep of the family. It also technically has a timing chain too, going to an intermediate shaft (dummy cam) that drives the belt. So depending on how deep down the DOHC rabbit hole he's gone, there's conflicting info that can be confusing.

The fact this has a 5 speed is amazing. Not a GM guy, but these cars always had a half decent look for an early 90's era styling. The olds and Buicks of this era had quirks for sure, but they build quality of this era was decent. Especially for the Buick Centuries and Olds variants. Shame it's not a 3800 V6 however...the 3400's were no where near as good as the 3800! A olds like that would be a fun daily driver but that one deserves to be protected and some love.

There is little more annoying to me when something fails after you had easier access to it while doing the primary task. I have always loved this body style and these cars.I always thought the convertibles were just so cool with that robar. If I ever ran into one decent condition, I would love to have it.I can't believe you fell in love with under a hundred thousand miles and this rare beautiful color

Finally a GM 60°V6! Been watching your videos for a few years and you finally get something in the same family as my 3400 turbo with a Getrag 282. And Happy Birthday!

I bought an 89 Cutless Supreme International. It was a new/leftover. It was a beautiful black metallic color. I did not have good luck. I had tons of things replaced or repaired under warranty. Transmission repair, paint peeling off, 2 window regulator/motors, power antenna, water pump, interior dash pad, ignition system, alternator, anti lock brake accumulator, brake switch, and MAF sensor (those left you dead in road then). There was other stuff, but i traded it right after warranty expired. Car was gorgeous and got a lot of comments, but my worst car for reliability.

Awesome video. This cutlass brings me back to the 80s/90s with my parents riding around town. Great buy! Enjoyed both vids, new subscriber!

Always liked those, seriously considered buying one a couple times, plus a Z34 with same motor. Always back away after researching online about reliability & maintenance. Very cool you got one and watching with great interest how you come along with it!

I had a cutlass with this exact setup other than being silver. 1 thing to know about these engines is to always get them to operating temperature before beating on them. Otherwise, they don't hold up. They are a fun, and peppy engine for the day. I also had a Lumina Z34 with the 3.4 dohc and manual trans.

I had the '88 Cutlass Supreme coupe! I loved it's futuristic digital display, shaved door handles, and the ability to drive everywhere I took it. I took weekend joy rides and rolled the odometer at like 250k. As if they never thought about it lasting any longer! 😂

I both worked on the development of the W-cars and I owned 2 of them (both Grand Prixs) and they were great cars! Only problem was with the rear disc brake caliper slide pins getting corroded after several Michigan winters, but easy enough to repair. Nice to see how robust your Cutlass is.

I had a Cutlass like that but not as nice was just a auto with the 3100. Yours is sick! 5 speed and a sunroof. That looks so fun to drive!

I love all of the cars you bought and brought them back to life. Have you ever thought of modifying them? E.g...like this blue one....wide body fenders?
