This 1970s Briggs and Stratton 5HP generator had been sitting in my abandoned shop when I bought the new CarsandCameras headquarters in a damp corner with a thick layer of dust on it. The engine was stuck. Can we make it run and use it as a mini bike engine?
Thanks for Watching!

I'm so happy to see you guys working on another Briggs! As I write this, I have 3 of my Briggs and Stratton's sitting next to me! Isaac, the newer coil swap you speak of was called the "magnetron" ignition, and engines started coming with them in 1982. Somewhere on that engine shroud (probably one of the flat sides) should be a model number, if it starts with 10, its a 4 HP, and if it starts with 13, then its a 5 HP! It's the cubic inches. The first two digits of the serial number indicates the year of the engine. As for what to do with the output shaft, I think you guys should pull the side cover and remove the plastic governor gear and internal and external governor arm of the engine at the same time as a crank swap! A side cover bolt with thread right through to fill the hole. Then set up the throttle cable to come up between the fuel tank and the shroud and have it take the place of the governor rod. That's an easy way to use the factory carb and fuel tank, and keep the engine safe from blowing the governor gear! Also, I am here to say that I care for the flatheads stronger than I do these Honda clones, and I'm ready to hear all your old stories from back in the day!

A few things 1. That's a Grand Prix mini bike. Taiwanese made and sold under a lot of different names, including Deltek 2. The engine size is stamped on the side of the tins above the gas tank. The first two digits should tell you the displacement. You can look that up to determine the power rating. 3. Awesome video. Keep 'em coming!

The flywheel key is aluminum so it shears easy enough that if the crank takes a shock load, it doesn't split the flywheel, or bend the crank. I have done all the mods you mentioned in this video to my Kart engines in the past. Literally all the key does is set the timing relative to the crankshaft. I never use a key in my flatheads. I throw the key over my shoulder, and turn the flywheel clockwise the width of the keyway to advance the timing for more top end power and more rpms. Shaving the head, advance the timing, smaller flywheel, and stuff a 6hp I/C crank in a 5hp block to get just a bit more stroke out of them, also the 6hp I/C cam. Has a bit different of a grind to it than a 5hp cam does. Also, make a custom tuned header by painting an 18" long stick of black iron pipe really thick with cheap paint, where you see the paint bubbling after it has run for a while, cut it off. Bam. "Tuned" header. All on the super cheap. You could also use one of the aluminum flywheel that has like 6 magnets in it with advanced timing. It will have to idle pretty high, but will rev REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY high, REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY fast. And I have never seen or had one personally explode from too many rod. Also, if you add a canted engine mount under that engine, it will hold more oil.

I have a 6.5 hp briggs with a taper shaft. I did the janky grinder/emery cloth turn down and it seems to work fine thus far.

This is an old engine, it has the air vane governor. I'm betting its a 3 or 4 hp not the more common 5 hp you are thinking about. In the 80s and 90s before briggs gave everybody the finger the raptor and animal engines were beasts.

Love that "cloud" when cleaning out the gas tank. Also, what is with the Honda Trail 90? Is that a future build?

You have my call for more of these. I have a gocart weighing about 50 lbs custom made in the 60s with a 3.5 horse 1 wheel peel and a singular custom made body panel. Has a door hing break and was made with a few car batteries as welders. Bout 12 feet of angle iron and 5 feet of 1/4 inch steel rod is the whole chassis with some sheet metal seat an wheel. When I say seat I mean platform and when I say wheel I mean square. This thing has a cold beer and a story to tell. Being my father's and my grandfather's before mine

I know i have mentioned several different suggestions for ideas on builds but i just found one that sounds really cool. You guys should try taking a self propelled push mower and turn it into a riding go kart. I guess you replace the blade with a pulley and this will power the self propelled part faster. build a chair over top the motor with a steering system in front.
