The real problem is: free entry of air along with accumulated oil in the air cooler. Oil from damaged turbo. You accelerate and the engine pulls accumulated oil. perfect combination to feed the engine at full rpm. oil works as fuel

While the German designed diesel engine was the beginning of this story, the US took it and ran with it, developing the things that made it viable, such as lubricating oils, which prior to those developments, handicapped the diesels reliability. The US also developed and perfected the concept of electric propulsion from the diesel generator set, especially with axle mounted traction motors, while the rest of the world fiddled with mechanical and hydraulic drives. The smoky locos in this video, would clear up upon the engine reaching temperature and the supercharger supplying the needed air. Prior to the high cost of fuel, most RR's started their diesels in the fall and let them running all winter. . This promoted long life by not having to stop and restart them, waiting for the engine to come up to temperature to operate efficiently. EMD division of GM, the number one maker of diesel electric locos in the world, GM decided they needed to get rid of EMD and sold it to another company. This was all at the behest of just one stockholder. Not sure why the #1 producer of locomotives would decide they needed to get out of the biz. The loco technology today, has made these engines fuel efficient, with supposed bad greenhouse exhaust gases greatly reduced, and will be continued in use to move everything this country needs and lives on for the foreseeable future. Convert one of the modern engines HP into watts, multiply that by the average number of locos in the current accepted practice of train lengths, 6-8, then figure out how many solar panels and batteries you would need to make it a real electric train. They wouldn't get far out of the yard before needing a recharge.

Many German diesel locomotives feature pre-heating systems. Sometimes electrically but also fueled bij diesel combusting. Brings te engine to a cosy 30+ degrees celcius. Less engine wear less polluting smoke fumes. Seeing those big engine strugle in cold seems so avoidable.
