There as many car reviewers out there, I must say, this one is not as good as others. For a starter, he keeps on telling us that the car is no good because it has technologies that he doesn’t understand or interested in using. Also, he said that Ute is too luxurious to be used as a work vehicle - I’ve seen people doing tip runs with their Range Rover .

My understanding is that the ICE drives the generator and can provide direct mechanical drive to the wheels over 70km/hr if the drivetrain computer calls for it. The ICE does not exclusively drive the generator, as you said in this review.

It does, but only to the front. There is no ability for the ICE to drive the rear, except with generated electricity to the battery. And there is no gearing from the ICE to the front wheels like in a normal vehicle, there is a clutch that engages to the drive motor.

This car just seems to be made for people like me. I do an 80km round trip to work and back, I don't do any hard off roading but do need to drive on pretty rough dirt tracks every now and then. I need a ute, just because i do! and occasionally drive long distances with family and/or dog in the back. Sure, I would love to be able to afford a new Hybrid Ranger or Hilux but I can't. So this vehicle also falls within an affordable price range. I will certainly be looking at it when I head up into the city sometime later this year. And that brings me to my one and only issue that may prevent me from purchasing one. Support for W.A. country. I sure as hell won't be driving to the city just to get it serviced and if they tell me they don't have authorised service centers in the country then it will be a deal breaker.

It's a lifestyle car for city slickers I think which is perfectly fine, it doesn't need to have any appeal to tradies. Here in the UK , business users and company car drivers are about to lose the fixed BIK rates associated with Pick ups due to a drastic cut by the Labour government. If BYD import the Shark here and its not severely taxed by the government they will mop up. I think it would arrive in the UK with a BIK around 8%, correct me if you disagree. Like for like the Shark would be around 30K into the UK if we went on the 60K Australian dollar cost but sadly we will probably be looking over £40k due to import taxes etc as per the Australian Tesla costs.

@Johnno1979 i get that but putting the vehicle in a high SOC kinda defeats the purpose of having a hybrid in the first place as the 1.5lt engine will be working harder and for longer. Thats what i want to see tested, how well does it maintain the 70% SoC, especially in a fully laden ute when you got things like bullbars and other weight. Especially if towing something like a 2tonne hybrid camper. So far this ute looks good for the money and does a lot right. Its a great car on paper, but my guess is that it will only really be purchased by private individuals or owner operators. I just cant see it threatening the Hilux and Ranger as a company car. Fleet buyers love Ford and Toyota. I just cant see the Shark threatening those. The main issue with the Shark is that you need to plug it in to get the best fuel range and performance. Bazza the electrician / plumber isn't going to plug his company provided work ute in at his house using his own electricity when he gets home at the end of the day. They typically have a company fuel card. On the flip side Bazza is going to love being paid to sit connected to a public charger for an hour on company time. The other foreseeable issue is second hand value. I wonder how much value the Shark will retain after 5 years of ownership compared to a Hilux / Ranger? Might be better to get it on a lease...

Well that's a deal breaker .. The warranty... One of the main thing that Chinese brands had going for them was the 7 year unlimited warranty. Looks Great .. Interior Looks Great.. Screens that stop working will right off the car after warranty expires . Not that i know BYD but my mate who owns a GWM for a year from NEW as lost a 1/3 of value and it is falling apart!

I've owned 3 utes Ranger, amarok and at the moment a GWM, had them all for 3 years. To my surprise the GWM is the only ute that hasn't broken down out of the 3 still the same as when I bought it new. Granted it's probably not as comfortable as the other 2 but it's not far off. Before the GWM I wouldn't even look at a Chinese ute, now I'll be ordering a BYD this year.

Ah, the old, “I’ve got a friend who…..etc” I own a GWM cannon from new. It’s a second vehicle in the family and has done 50,000 kms and is used for farming. Does a bit of bitumen work but not a lot. I did change the springs and shockers as I wanted a bit more clearance and firmer ride. I tow with it but usually under 2 tons and also tow a boat about 1500kgs. Not a single problem so far. Not bad off road and at least as good as the BT50 it replaced.

A very ordinary review. Take it out of the suburbs. What about fuel consumption once you’re out in the country where there’s no charging opportunities and it’s running on combustion. Couldn’t you have found an off-road track or even a gravel road to try it. If this is the best you can do, don’t bother.

Driver monitoring is a deal breaker for me... apart from the annoyance it's just creepy... So I won't be owning a car that behaves like Big Brother for as long as i can get away with it...(maybe there's a restomod in my future 🤔) I know I'm in a minority wanting to stay free from government monitoring but I've also successfully resisted consuming that product that the censorship won't allow me to mention so it's nothing too inconvenient for me 😂😂😂

😂 Chinese state-owned agent? Did China 🇨🇳 buy Australia 🇦🇺 🤔 Whilst the rest of the developed world will tariff Chinese made cars 100% How long will it last 🤔 How's resale values going to be 🤔

We don't have domestic car brands/manufacturing in Australia to protect so why tariff Chinese cars? Putting taxes on Chinese cars just shows how the US and Europe can't compete with China, on one hand the West says Made in China = low quality then need to put tariffs on Chinese cars because US/Europe aren't confident that their own domestic products can succeed in a market with Chinese made cars.
