@@WhiteWolfos That's not even what the 100% tariff is for. You legally CANNOT self import (AKA gray import or parallel) a car into the United States and be able to legally register it for road use until it is 25 years old. So even if you are personally willing to buy a BYD in Mexico, China, wherever and pay the 100% tariff, you still not allowed to do it. The only way to legally sell a new car in the US is for the manufacture to come set up sales and service networks. Which is why the 100% tariff was put into place. @@waterloo123100 the gasoline engine is only a generator. It is not mechanically linked to the wheels. All the towing/motive force comes from the electric motors and the battery. The good thing about the generator approach is the engine could theoretically run at one set RPM value for maximum efficiency and never change. Maybe the engine isn't rated for high torque loads, or does poorly across a range of RPMs, but none of those are concerns in this case. The gas motor doesn't care how fast your accelerating, if your going up hill, or how heavy you tow. It only charges the battery at a set rate. Then the electric motors take energy from the battery at a variable rate.

If I gave up my ICE F150, I would want the BYD truck. The others are expensive toys with somewhat limited truck abilities. I agree the Rivian is the better-looking truck; but that is not enough to sway me to buy it. I know the BYD has a limited towing capability, but I would be interested in a tow test to see what it could do when running on the ICE powering a generator powering the batteries/electric motors. If it could realistically tow 5,000 lbs., then this would be the perfect midsize pickup. For the most part it runs on its batteries with a good useful battery range as a light duty truck. When you need to do real truck duties and/or need extended range, the ICE gets you there. Very impressive design and build.

@TheDarinseng2 ай бұрын
There is no technical reason it can't be done. The hold back has been technology and cost. Electric motors being used in recent years are far more efficient and cost effective enough now to be considered along with the electronics to control them. The drawback still remains is that a mobile fuel based engine is no where near as efficient as a stationary grid capable generator from both output and cleanliness. Having a engine small enough to fit in a vehicle that has to operate under all types of weather conditions, yet be durable enough to take the shocks from road/off road conditions and an exhaust system small and light enough to be emissions friendly has its drawbacks and limits. The same fuel source is capable of producing much more electricity from a large stationary generator that can be then stored in a battery for usage. The ICE vehicle engine is pretty close to its limits for efficiency. Battery tech has huge potential for improvements thus can advance not only vehicle propulsion into the future (the market driver for the tech) but just about every single electronic device will benefit as well from those advancements.

Hey guys! Excellent review! A few details about the Shark: - That front bias you feel is because the front motor is 170kw while the rear is 150kw - The motor will only charge the battery when it's below 70%. With the way batteries recharge, charge speed slows down between 70-100. The engine won't be able to put enough charge in the battery in that SOC range so it just doesn't. - That plug ports are 3kw max out, but the V2L adaptor from the charge port COULD provide 6kw. It's not confirmed for the Shark but that is because this DMO platform can output on other vehicles - The Shark is very much modelled off a Ford Ranger. So much so that Ford Ranger accessories will fit onto the Shark (roll bars and tonneau covers) Looking forward to more videos on it!

The Shark is not technically a hybrid, it's an ERV (extended range vehicle). The difference is that in an ERV, the ice engine only provides power to the battery and not to the drive shaft/wheels (as you mentioned). This is why when you turned on hybrid mode you still didn't hear the engine because they're still power in the battery. Plenty of manufacturers are looking at ervs since you get some of the efficiency benefits of an EV (producing power via gas for the batteries is more efficient than using gas to move the car) with some of the benefits of being able to fill up with gas.

Until you build that infrastructure, for a working truck this is optimal solution.

Full electric pickups are great for anyone who does not tow, however those that need to tow would love to have more efficient options than ice only (also they have better torque and can take advantage of regen) . The Ramcharger design seems to be that happy medium to deliver power for longer ranges when towing but also have the advantage of a good daily commute distance on battery power only. Trucks should move to full electric drivetrains that have an optional range extender option. Personally, this design would be great. I tow a behemoth RV style trailer (8.5k pounds) 3-4 times a year but the rest of the year i just drive a V8 around a city to run errands, which is a waste of efficiency when compared to a BEV. The reality is that a vast majority of truck owners have a truck for a hobby or reason but do need it’s capabilities day-to-day. I am one of those people. If it wasnt for the RV, my daily driver would be something smaller and efficient. A BEV towing more than 100ish miles is also not practical. Towing my RV from Texas to Colorado with a BEV truck is not practical (time or number of stops). A gas range extender helps out a ton in this scenario. Until battery tech gets much better, gas or diesel still wins the energy density and weight war.

@@chriswilson7138 I totally agree your point of view. In fact I use BYD PHEV Tang SUV towing Fendt caravan in China. The dmi powertrain is similar to DMO of SHARK(same engine but horizontal, 21kwh battery) . The BEV mode at towing will consume 35 kWH per 100 km, comparing to PHEV mode 11L/100km. No charge infrastration will fit for such a higher electricity cosumption. Though every 50km there are fast chargers in Service area of the highway, it's inconvinient to disconnected.

EREV is a trend now for chinese manufacturers because not every location in the world have adequate charging infrastructure. the battery should be enough for daily commute, if more range needed, the generator kicks in.

Well one thing: BYD’s quality is much better than the other two.

If you're impressed with this, go to Y.T car reviewers from Austalia,Europe,S.E Asia,etc. and check all the other different vehicles they can buy. I think if U.S car reviewers went to any Chinese auto show, they would have a multi orgasm experience. By the way this BYD Shark is by no means the best from China.

Rivian is for paved road just looking at the tires and design. Cybertruck I have no idea with the design and tires. BYD is for developing countries in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Middle East & North Africa where people like car / truck / SUV with stronger springs and more lift at the back. I am not sure why but it's probably because they like to overload their trucks and actually use the bed for cargo
