With the 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class ushering in the sixth generation of the premium large car, it goes without saying that the German brand has a lot of experience when it comes to more traditional transport. Yes, the SUVm continues to rise in popularity, but sedans like this one aren't done yet.
So, what's new with next-gen E-Class? Well, the Australian range has been consolidated, with only a highly specified E300 variant available from launch, although AMG E53 and E63 versions are expected to arrive later. Either way, the initial entry is powered by a 190kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, which is supplemented by a 17kW/205Nm mild-hybrid system.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Journalist Chris Thompson attends the E300's national media launch to find out how well it stacks up against the new-generation BMW 5 Series and recently updated Audi A6.
