@@jamien.5528 My God, you are humorless. Do you honestly believe that I think Mr. Rogers is in hell? Humor is created by cognitive dissonance. A punch line that runs counter to the premise. The original post talked about them in heaven as an assumption. And I tweaked the assumption and turned it. God, people like you who make me explain a joke...

Johnny said in a later show that Mr. Rogers disliked Carson's parodies of his show. Mr. Rogers was on the Tonight Show at least twice, but with Joan Rivers hosting. I don't think Carson would've been comfortable interviewing Mr. Rogers because it would be too difficult to make light of someone with a very sincere message, and in all likelihood Rogers would've confronted him about the parodies and Carson hated confrontation, which is why he never had controversial guests on his show.

Matthew Kaiser I don't think Fred will confront a person in front of millions, or even in private...
@glen4338
@glen4338 7 жыл бұрын
That's not true, Matthew. I specifically remember Fred Rogers being a guest on the show, and Johnny was the host. It was some time in the 70s, and both he and Ed were there, and Johnny made a suggestive joke after Rogers said something, and Fred was laughing, and, naturally, so was Ed. Whether Rogers was actually angry at the joke, he didn't actually show it. Maybe it was after THAT that Rogers refused to be on the show, because it was a funny, but not so subtle, joke that Carson kidded Rogers with.

Fred knew how to express anger. He wasn't an android with no feelings. His co-workers stated he would get angry on the show as they had many obstacles, but he would never pound tables, swear, or raise his voice, but instead put it to written words of brutal criticism, and use tactics such as staring you down and shaking your head. He was known to be a control freak on his show and micro-managed every part of it. For example, he would scold anyone trying to ad-lib lines and made them re-do the scenes until they got it right. Anyone challenging Fred would get the run-down from him, or be asked to leave by him personally. Fred sicced his pack of lawyers against other countries airing his production episodes without permission. Fred was tough - one has to be tough if they are a leader, which is what Fred was.

It's very surprising how the parodies of Mister Rogers Neighborhood goes on with the legendary Eddie Murphy playing as the role of Mister Robinson on Saturday Night Live between 1981-1984, of course Mister Robinson got his best comedic, adult humour compared to Carson, in which Mister Rogers really finds that amusing, especially for his younger viewers were supposed to sleep just to make him enjoying the parody.

Fred Rogers probably hated to be reminded that he spent his life putting on a sappy children's show. A show that any self respecting intelligent child would have found condescending and offensive. Not surprising that as annoying as Rogers' TV personality was that he would be offended by a parody that appeals to adults.

I always thought Mr. Carson was sort of a ladies man. The dude was married like five times over the course of his career. I figured he was like the "Player of the 60's", host of the Tonight Show, rich, talented, intelligent and funny as heck. Of course he could have his pick right? I mean no disrespect to his Wives and by all accounts the Women he married were intelligent as well as beautiful and married because they were in love with Mr Carson. It was speculated that was one of the reasons his divorce settlement were so large, not just because he was wealthy but because these Woman felt they had been betrayed. If you were a just another gold digger you would be looking for the exit ramp and the pay day as soon as possible, no harm no foul right. Johnny grew up in rural Nebraska or Kansas somewhere like that and and was apparently a nice man who never lost all of the values and qualities that typically are associated with that kind of upbringing. Watching his classic videos you can see how warm and down to earth he is. He was wicked smart and funny as heck too. I wounder if he was really just an old fashioned guy who loved Women and being in love. I wonder if career got in the way of his married life. Women who love their husbands don't enjoy being left alone and Johnny Carson was definitely a hard working Man . Has anyone written the definitive biography of real Johnny Carson. How he managed to always seem at the top of his game and really having the best of everything while being the best at what he did. I did not get to watch his show as a kid growing up in Ohio, my parents were the conservative early to bed types and my Dad thought Johnny was a little to provocative for younger ears. When I was in college, I was so busy working , studying and having fun I had no time for tv at all. After that, I was all about career. I never really understood all the fuss about late night tv host. I'm really glad I have the time now to enjoy these clips of Mr. Carson on you tube, he was really brilliant! Watching clips of his show I now understand how and why that time slot is so important. He was late night television and many of TV's and Hollywood biggest stars got their start on his show. The guys doing late night now are all very smart, talented and funny dudes and they have to be because Mr Carson set the standard. If anybodys got links to clips with better resolution, post a link or do some uploads if you got the time. Thanks!!

Modern culture is too sensitive but this one incident is about respect for a man who is a gentle soul. Even in the 70's this skit was poorly received by his audience.
