Carson- I have listened to literally dozens of covers of this song. Many, many of them are absolutely unlistenable, and many are by singers trying to emulate Dylan, which is a shame, because, as this video shows, it's a very melodic song if given a chance. This is a beautiful performance. I especially like the moment at 2:08 where Carson uses the "stop" in the lyric as a break-down moment and then calmly scratches himself until it's time to start playing again. Such calm! I've watched it a 100 times trying to cover Carson here. For the guitar players, here's what I think is happening: everything's tuned down 1/2 a step and then the following chord progression: E - E - Emaj7 - Emaj7 - E7 - E7 - Asus2 - Asus2 - Amin-add2 - Amin-add2 - | E - Emaj7 | - F#min7 - E -F#min7.
@LanceHuffmanAz4 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate you posting this. I have been trying to figure this out myself. I figured it had to be alternative tuning somehow, but I couldn't get a handle on it. Also, I'm not sure why it matters, as it would be difficult to do the song this much justice. But that's the effect these guys have on me - they make me want to practice and try to emulate just a fraction of their talent.
@bgp66564 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much
@donmiller29084 жыл бұрын
You obviously know the guitar, so I wanted to ask this question, which may sound stupid but I don't know anything about the instrument and It's always bugged me. When guitarists are pressing the strings on the neck of the guitar to change the chords, sometimes their hand will be near the tuning pegs and sometimes near the sound hole depending on what chord is needed. Sometimes they need to change the chords rapidly from one end to the other which results in a squeak when the fingers slide along the length of the strings. Can't anything be done about this? That squeak sounds horrible and to me, ruins the tune.
@jakejones28184 жыл бұрын
@@donmiller2908 Man this is part of the character of a guitar, all these casual peripheral sounds from the instrument. In pop music nowadays they'll often be edited out but in my opinion it's a sweet part of the whole, physical expression of playing a guitar. Learn to love these quirks and chance squeals from her.
@raindog22624 жыл бұрын
@@donmiller2908 Also as you become more practiced on the guitar, you'll find the squeaks hopefully diminish because your hand speed will increase enough so that rather than slid into or out of a chord shape, you'll come straight off the neck and then straight down. Well, that's the plan anyway. Takes practice but it can be done.

@carsonmckeemusic4 жыл бұрын
Ryan Taylor I basically never pre-record audio...one, because I feel it would undermine the “you’re sitting here listening to me play” immediacy I like about my videos, and two, because it’s honestly harder to nail than just doing the damn thing live, especially if I’m just working with vox and guitar, hah! But seriously, I don’t blame you for thinking so-some aspects, like reverb and such, obviously don’t match the outdoor setting, but I’m a sucker for plate verb, so I included it anyway. There are also tricky tracks like “Take It Easy”, where I’m playing a G shape, but tuned down, so that it sounds like an E or something, and instances where I’ve dubbed in, like, one chord to mask a major flub (meaning there might be a half-second where my playing doesn’t match the video). But still-it’s pretty dang live if I can help it.

This voice is like the coffe, milked by his guitar, just as bourbon after an heavy working day, just like a glass of pure water after a long walk in a very hot day... This voice sing out of herself

It's easy enough to listen to Bob Dylan sing this song again but I enjoy listening to people's covers as a way to experience great songs in a fresh light. Everything was right about this video. Great voice and musicianship. Relaxing surroundings. Sitting in a field playing a song. More people should spend their time like that. Thank you Carson.
