Siren Information:
This siren, labelled as Siren F by Mrmattandmrchay, is adjacent to the railway station in Carstairs Junction. It is a Secomak CS8, and is faulty - the power cable to the high-tone shutter's solenoid has been forcibly removed (possibly stolen by metal thieves), rendering that shutter 'jammed shut', while the low-tone shutter has a mechanical fault and is 'jammed open'. Sound-wise, this is basically a GP6.
Trip/Video Information:
This is only the second time I've been on a trip to a siren network and actually managed to record the siren I wanted to. Being both a rail and siren enthusiast, I wanted to answer a mental question: what if you were watching trains on Carstairs station at 1pm on the third Thursday? Unfortunately, no trains were around to properly show what happens (as a tree felled by the extreme winds of Storm Dudley had knocked out the 25kV overhead cables at Beattock - forcing the West Coast Mainline to close), but regardless I decided to film the siren test from the station as something of an experiment.
It turns out, if you listen carefully from the station, Ravenstruther's GP12 is also (just about) audible, even though there's a CS8 basically right next to you.
I also wanted to see if the hospital siren is actually visible - it wasn't from the angles we tried, leading me to believe that, as per the siren in Woodbeck (on-site at Rampton Hospital), the siren on-site at The State Hospital is most likely mounted on the side of a building and facing inwards.
As with my Ravenstruther and Braehead videos, this video uses footage and audio from a tripod-mounted Sony FDR-AX33. However, there is no second angle/walkabout footage on this occasion, as I had to stay on the platform to ensure Storm Dudley didn't claim the camcorder. As per the Braehead video, this video was edited in iMovie.
