The Daytona Coupe race was amusing. I also seem to remember seeing something about the Coupe that after Spector sold it, the car ended up in a storage unit and was lost to the enthusiast world for years until someone finally tracked it down and bought it for the family of the late owner.

I worked with my father at Barris Kustom starting in 1973 and the Monkeey mobile was there. I was pretty stunned to find out the Super Charger was fake. When you raised the hood the Super Charger was attached to it and I pretty stunned by that. I could be wrong but I think I recall being told the original did have a working Super Charger. Some years later I met Micky Dolenz at a hang gliding contest in Sylmar, CA. I was standing at the bottom of the mountain near where they were landing and away from the crowd of spectators and Micky walked over and started talking to me. He hung out with me for quite awhile there. He was "Celebrity Guest" and paid to be there. I don't recall much of what we talked about but we both agreed those hang gliders were freaking crazy!

Very cool, and yeah as I mentioned in the video, initially the engines were fitted with functional superchargers indeed, but the actors couldn't handle that kind power, so they switched it back to the stock setup normally asperated tri-power with the a prop blower instead.

@@TheOzarkExplorer George Barris didn't design the Monkeemobile. Dean Jeffries built it at his shop...just a few doors down from Barris customs. But that didn't keep Barris from buying it and claiming that he did....Same with the "Black Beauty" (green hornet).
@TheOzarkExplorer
@TheOzarkExplorer 2 ай бұрын
@@robinluck2922 Yeah, that sounds right. George bought a lot of show cars and put his name on them. When I worked at his shop with my father in the 70s we didn't build any new show cars. But George did buy and sell them. He and Jay Orberg both did and they sold them back and forth to each other over the years.

Oddly enough, when the show went away, and the Monkee's where gone, MPC models recycled the kit by chopping the front of the top off and calling it "Fonzie's Dream Rod" to cash in on the Happy Days, and Fonz popularity, and that kit is now pretty rare in itself.

More useless information incoming: It appears that the only modification MPC did to the kit was the chopping of the top. After ERTL bought both MPC and AMT, they issued the restored Monkeemobile in the late '80's under the Blueprinter series in a mostly white box. These were only available via mail order through the Blueprinter newsletter from AMT/ERTL. It's been reissued at least two or three times since then. Also, while the original '67 MPC kit is not particularly rare, a factory sealed example can be VERY pricey.

One of the specifications was that the car would be able to pull a wheel-stand (pop a wheelie) For the show's theme. So the rear axle was welded directly to the frame on one car. That's what made the car un-drivable. Simply having a supercharged engine would not make the car un-drivable. And they were never able to get a good shot of the wheelie so the idea was abandoned.

And I even HAD a GTO as my FIRST CAR!! {BTW -- I bought my own first car and paid CASH!} My Brother and I built well over 100 model cars, in great detail... even painting the door handles and dash. There was a garage there associated with Barris that had a: Batmobile, James Bond 007, Mach 5, Munsters Coffin Dragster, a Herbie, the longest Limo in the world and a bunch of others packed into a small garage on a side street. In 1987 I worked for a shop in Pontiac called Rush collision. The owner named Bob said that when he was young he worked on a Monkee mobile body as a prototype. It would make sense that he had something to do with it since he was from Pontiac. In 87 I repaired a sunbird prototype that was fixed and sold after the repair. So I know that these things went on up there.

I have a few of the MPC models. On those, the car shows no rear suspension with the rear axle bolted directly to the frame rails. The frame on the model is straight with the humps completely removed and replaced with straight sectoon. I've never seen a clear enough shot of the rear axle to confirm the real cars are this way, but your videos of the car at Barret Jackson and of it sitting in a parking lot show the exhaust pipes running under the rear axle. Can anyone confirm?
@CarStarz42

@@CarStarz42 fairy enough, but why is the exhaust run under the axle on the Barrett Jackson car and one of the lst cars in you vid?
@CarStarz42
@CarStarz42 2 ай бұрын
@@joelcheek3494 I assume that's just how they chose to route it to save on space above the axle, they probably had to lower the flooring a bit in that area for the added rear seat. If you think about it, an axle has a maximum hang down point and a maximum upper compression point, so you could route the exhaust over or under the axle and be good either way with proper clearance. 😉👍
@joelcheek3494
@joelcheek3494 2 ай бұрын
I found the answer. I hope it is not deleted this time. The rear axle was mounted directly to the frame when Car 1 was originally built. This is probably the reason the powerful engine was "undrivable". Sometime later, leaf springs were added.

@@joelcheek3494 Hmm, very odd if true. Yeah if you tried to put an external link in a comment, the system doesn't let it post, but without actually linking to it, where did you find that out as it doesn't make much sense to me of why they would ever to that for a street car especially?

Great video!! I plan to build the front clip of the Monkeemobile in the near future. I had a 1/2 of a tempest that got creamed in the rear so I made it into a jig to hold the front fenders. I have sketches and dimensions off of the original car that George Barris restored and sold (Mel's car) and the dims are amazingly accurate to the scale die cast model, or vica versa. Once the front clip is done, I'll offer it for sale (to finance building the real car) and pursue a 66 Pontiac complete car to build a complete Monkeemobile. Thanks again!!
