I understand the i40 was discontinued around 2019. In North America this car is marketed as Sonata. The cars built after 2022 have a faulty rear curtain airbag which will break the neck of rear passengers in a frontal crash - look up youtube for the video called "2023 Hyundai Sonata updated moderate overlap IIHS crash test". The faulty curtain airbag gets trapped in the seatbelt and causes the passenger neck to twist completely on rebound. Scary. The IIHS institute gave the mark Poor and warned of neck injuries for rear passengers sitting by the door (center seat passenger is fine). Same issue happens with the Kia k5 model of same years. The american Sonata neve got diesel engines or estate body. There are differences in suspension setup as well.

No i40 was built after 2019, it’s been discontinued. So the Sonata changes do not apply to this model.

@@CarswithAlbertAlex it’s not helpful, it’s a different model. i40 was discontinued in 2019 in Europe so not a single i40 is impacted by the mentioned issue. And you can’t buy Sonata in the UK.

@@CarswithAlbertAlex no worries, I own the same i40 you’ve tested, an automatic 1.7 CRDi diesel, and I was quite sad they’ve discontinued it. It’s bad enough they changed the engine to 1.6 in 2018, but then they completely discontinued it too. Such a shame. It’s certainly not a Sonata. In fact even if you compare same year model i40 to Sonata, let’s say a 2015 i40 to 2015 Sonata, you’ll find significant differences including engine size, suspension firmness, and even how many airbags they have, the i40 has an extra knee airbag compared to the Sonata. So no, it’s not the same model, never was, never will be. I drove a rental Sonata too in 2016 in the US, and it also noticeably drives differently from my i40.

Skoda tends to be more expensive. I do like that the Hyundai has almost no tunnel at the back, whereas VW and Skoda have pronounced tunel, even when not equipped with 4x4.
