In Ireland they have been used as Police or Garda cars for the last few years. The estates are marked police cars always in white and the unmarked ones are sedans in navy, black or grey. The previous generation i30 estate, the current gen Tucson and Kona are also used. It’s also weird seeing you drive one without “undercover cop” coming to mind

As a satisfied owner of a 2017 SE Nav Business, I started watching with cautious optimism. But I'm delighted: Matt's review is spot on. This car feels more than the sum of its parts. The economy never fails to impress me, As a 6 foot 6 inches driver, I have driven 450 mile round trips and still feel my relaxed limbs at the end. My only gripes are the poor level of illumination from the headlights; and the rather snatchy DCT 'box when cold. That apart, a fine car and one I am proud to own.

If you buy a car like a Hyundai, Kia, Honda, Nissan etc it is telling everyone you don't care about cars, driving, luxury, quality materials, design or nice interiors. Basically, if you're thinking of getting something like that, save your money and get the bus instead.

@@sandersson2813 Have to disagree on a couple of your mentioned manufactures models.A friend of mine had a Honda type r,a fantastic drivers car, fast, handled well and the v-tec engine was faultless. Also was lucky enough a couple of years ago to sample Nissans wonderful GTR,again It was a joy to drive, super quick and a great soundtrack.Yes both cars mentioned are about speed and handling and not about luxury etc,but for driving excitement they tick the box and offer more pleasure than a bus.

I had a new i40 Tourer as a Company car back in 2012/13 and it was brilliant. As a service engineer the back was constantly full of tools and spares, and it coped just fine. Economy was amazing, and it was just so quiet and smooth to drive. I really liked the featherlight steering which made parking in town easy, combined with front and rear sensors and an excellent rear camera. I did 32,000 from new in about 18 months, and it was totally reliable. Not a single problem. My only criticisms are; Its a very low slung car, and if you park next to a high kerb, passengers have difficulty getting out of it. Also when I had the boot heavily laden, it sometimes caught the exhaust on speed humps. The quality of the leather on the steering wheel was suspect, it started to flake a bit at 30K and I don't wear rings or any thing like that. My current Nissan feels as if the leather is much thicker and hard wearing. The seats were also not as hard wearing or comfortable as my Nissan, and showed signs of sagging at 30K. The shiny bits on the steering wheel also scratched amazingly easily, probably from the seat belt as I brought it across to put it on. However apart from a few quality issues on materials I would highly recommend it as a used buy and prices seem quite reasonable.

Another good video, I have rented I40s and have really enjoyed them. Here in Australia they come with a 2.0 petrol with a few of the 1.7 diesels. But in the UK I rented an Insignia, I thrashed it between London and Dorset and found it to be a really decent car, fast with plenty of space for 4 people. Perhaps its just an image problem in the UK with people being more status conscious than here.

I had one of these cars as a rental on a holiday in America a few years ago. I was offered an upgrade (yes, I always fall for that!) to the i40 at the rental desk, and as I then had my own Hyundai i30 at home, I took the upgrade. It was a very nice drive, throughout the many miles covered in Florida and into Georgia - from the interstates through to dusty back roads. Very well specced, although I admit I did not read the manual to find out what every button did! The only thing I'm not keen on with rentals in America is the automatic transmission, and the auto in the i40 was no better or worse than other rentals I've had. I much prefer the manual cars as we have in the UK.

I drove these for years with a set of blue lights on the top. Trust me they get hammered for the three years of their life and generally they are bomb proof despite going from a cold engine to red line in every gear on a daily basis. For a budget car with no frills they handle well. excellent for chasing burglars and they crash well. Once you have wound the diesel engine up to the max its solid at highish three figure speeds. Just don’t buy one at auction with 150k plus miles and ripped seat bolsters as you know who will have been the previous owners. Great but a bland car. Get the diesal estate version.

The only issue I had was as the clutch got older the biting point gradually got closer and closer to the bulkhead until at 90K miles - the biting point seemed to be somewhere in front of the exhaust manifold. Hyundai replaced the clutch under warranty. Good luck with your training course.

I bought a 2012 i40 1.7 CRDi manual wagon from new when they were new to the market. I have done 207000 km in it. The manual gearbox was a special order here in Australia and only available in base model. The i40 was apparently designed in Germany. I consistently get under 5.0L/km, over 1000km a tank. Only issues I have had are a replacement upgraded clutch (in 2018), replacement steering coupler (know issue but a much easier/cheaper fix than I first expected), air condition solenoid valve (at around 1950000 km) and recently a worn out clutch engagement switch. These 1.7 CRDi engines will easily do 400000 km plus if you maintain them regularly and use quality fuel and oil and look after the EGR valve, intake manifold and DPF. Given the reliability, carrying capacity, full size spare wheel and impressive fuel economy I am suprised they didn't sell more of them in Australia. I think most people shopping in the same price bracket for similar load capacity opted for an SUVs such as Tuscon and Sportage. Also be mindful that from around 2015 the 6 speed auto was replaced with the newer more fuel efficient Hyundai 7 speed DCT (dry clutch). I am not sure about the long term reliability of these units.

Hi have an i40 se nav tourer (141hp) with approaching 100000 miles from new. It is a great car which as you quite rightly point out is comfortable to drive. Everything you say is correct however my experience unfortunately involved a failing dual mass flywheel. Hyundai did eventually help with the repair and I had a new clutch put in at the same time. The car had not moved during the first lockdown last year and although Hyundai were told this and the issue only commenced three months out of the warranty, their initial offer was £100 to match the dealers £100. The total cost was £1600. However a more helpful member of warranty staff had this boosted to £960. The dealer then removed their £100 offer. The car is repaired and going strong. It was disappointing given the cars inactivity Hyundai did not assist further as the car had a full service history from Hyundai main dealers. I wondered had anyone else had flywheel issues?
@alindinca28643 жыл бұрын
Changed the dual mass flywheel at 290.000 km ~ 180.000 miles. It started to make a ticking sound in the first 5-10 minutes after I turned the engine on, especially in cold temperatures. The clutch kit + the flywheel (branded Sachs) + the gearbox oil costed me around £700 in total, and £100 more for the mechanic (which is my cousin, has an authorised service). I have the sedan 1.7 diesel, 136hp, 2013, manual, full-options (full leather, ventilated front seats, retractable sunshade on rear window, auto lateral-parking, etc) excepting the sunroof. Got it for 8000€ 6 months ago, it was a nice deal.

Good review as ever Matt , nice looking , spacious , reliable car, funnily enough I did look at one a couple of years ago, before opting for an Insignia instead ,(!!) I've gotta say I have no regrets ! Never quite understand why the insignia gets so much hate, if someone could have shown me an alternative 4 year old (then) car which would have given me space , comfort , decent performance and economy ,, low running costs , reliability ( yes honestly!) for a quarter of the new list price of £24k I would have been pretty surprised !! So believe it or not I've always been into cars, have had enthusiast cars previously , but sometimes a car is just needed to serve a purpose for a couple of years and do what it says on the tin! 2 things I would say about the i40 and insignia , no horrible, pointless stupid looking fake exhaust outlets which now seem to ruin so many designs , and secondly how can these cheaper cars manage to seamlessly integrate a decent sized satnav / media screen into the dash design when a lot of premium German manufacturers , and others now, seem happy to design the dash , then stick a tablet / screen on top which looks like an afterthought , is it just laziness? ! Anyway if you're still reading this keep up the excellent , thorough and humourous reviews , cheers Matt

Another great video mate, I’ve been looking at an i40 for over a year to replace my very trusty 1.9 PD Skoda Octavia.

I had the 1.6 diesel 140 bhp estate, absolutely loved it when I was living in Germany, sadly had to sell it when I left and they dont sell them anymore in Germany, but if I ever have to sell my Freelander2 (never) I wouldn't hesitate in buying another one.

I had one as a hire car in Australia and drove it from Brisbane to Sydney. It was fine really, but didn't excite me. It's well made that's for sure and did it's job.

Hi this is a great video. The Hyundai i40 diesel are used as taxis in my country Singapore. U will see them everywhere. Always knew this was a good car.

I drove an i40 2.0 GDI couple of years back. Very enjoyable. In my knowledge its one of the most powerful naturally aspirated 2 litre production engine In the world. Smooth and powerful and fuel economy is decent if driven behavedly.

1:30 I knew you were going to say exported to Ireland 😂😂 they’re literally known as a Garda car (Irish police car) because of the sheer amount of them being Garda vehicles (I could guess about 75% you’d see on the road are part of the police force) Also, they did a 1.6 CRDi (116 and 136bhp, manual or 7-speed DCT) which were Euro 6d-TEMP so they used adblue with the addition of an SCR. The 1.6 and 1.7 diesels are both very reliable engines. They started using the 1.6 in around late 2018.

Properly under-rated. Think this is the first car Hyundai made that wasnt utter crap. Everything since has been decent

The organisation l work for bought a lot of the old i30s and the build quality wasn't great. The finish came off the steering wheel, the seats wore out prematurely, the gearchange felt like it was all held together with cable ties etc. But recently I've been driving a 6 year old newer model with 50K on the clock and it feels really good. Not a squeak or rattle. There's no wear on seats or any of the trim. If this is how much the brand has improved the next generation should be worth buying.

I think you missed out on one essential issue with Korean "smile long time" style engineering into these vehicles Matt ? I had an issue with a lady friend and her flat battery where without split folding rear seats, one couldn't access the boot to get to her tool kit since the remote worked, but couldn't open a bloody boot ! There wasn't even a separate cable operated release lever beside her seat, nor a slot for her key to open it manually. The battery is a specific size costing over £150 and you need the tool kit to remove or then replace a 'flaming dragon' battery

They have done a good job of morphing the look of several cars into one. Exhibit A - Audi lookalike front grill treatment It saves on 'name' car designers I suppose. They do a wagon (or estate, shooting brake or whatever you call them in the UK ) it looks really good and is practical especially when moving bodies.

Owned all 3 of the cars mentioned here and the 2013 i40 (which I have owned for the last 12 months and 20000 miles) has now done 93000 miles has only needed 2 sensors. Does 50 mpg average so I’ll keep it another year then upgrade it for the newer shape. A bit uninspiring to drive but very reliable.

Brilliant video, I used to own a Proton Impian. The car journalists slagged this car of as being a cheap car and uncomfortable car. But I had no problem with the car, lt was nice to drive on long journeys, very comfortable and a very reliable car. Matt you need to do a review on the undesirable cars in your future videos. See if you can contact your car dealer friends and grab three or four undesirable cars and do a review. It would be very Interesting. Thank you very much.
