When you migrate you leave EVERYTHING behind. Women in particular find that all their connections have now gone, usually the husband is employed, no friends, family, community. Even though you speak English no one understands what you are saying and you have to keep repeating yourself. Depression seeps in and it’s hard to recognise in yourself. Getting out and meeting people is like leaving your home with cement boots on your feet. It’s a walk that few understand. There is nothing familiar about your new surroundings so the grief and loss is very real. My children became my best friends, and as they grew they became less dependent on me. That was 40 odd years ago now. Anyone who is thinking of migrating really needs to consider what issues your new aloneness might present. Don’t be afraid to get out there and tell people that you would love to hear about their country, and you will absolutely make new friends, and develop a social life, I promise.
