What is crazy about this scene is when you rewatch the first three seasons you see that everything he says here is right. He never fit in as a surgeon. So well done, and the foreshadowing always was there.

True. Benton had scenes were he just see Carter like he was crazy. He said to Carter that he didn't act like a surgeon.

The evolution of the season on Carter had been building since the beginning. He was never a surgeon. He really would've been good at any specialty but every audience member knew he would be better the ER. The writers knew they had something pure and genuine with Noah Wyle's brilliant performances.

What I love most about this scene is the 3 years worth of character development here. Not many shows get that chance to do this kind of storyline over the course of 3 years. ER was so good in the ratings that NBC pretty much left the show along in that regard.

Especially when he gets Weaver fired, Susan Lewis doesn't get tenure, Doug Ross, Carol, and maybe few other characters had to leave. Anspaugh got his nephew a job. His nephew is a product of nepotism.

I absolutely love the Carter character. This scene was critical to his growth. But let's not forget what good character Dr. Anspaugh was, and what a great actor (RIP) John Aylward was. ER had an absolutely stellar main cast, but one of the best parts of this show is that it had a truly stellar supporting cast also. There were so many great characters who weren't in the opening credits and Anspaugh was one of them. They really helped make the show what it was.

sophia sconzo We watched him go from a medical student that couldn’t do an IV to the doctor that learned the best part of every more experienced doctor and used it. He handled working in Africa because his brain’s ‘muscle memory’ allowed him to learn quickly and combine his skills in real deadly circumstances. John Carter was an amazing character. Noah Wylie was a treasure. He didn’t even want to do a TV show. When his agent sent him the script he assumed it was a movie at first. By the time he realized it wasn’t he was too hooked to let John Carter go without a fight. Lucky us.
