Hey, Carter, very helpful tutorial! I just purchased a new vehicle & salesman was helping me set up android auto. It wasn't working even after repeated attempts and uninstalling/reinstalling app. Turns out I only had a charging cable with me BUT several times during the tutorial you mention using a USB charging cable. I'm only commenting here in case others have the same issue as I did. I now have ONLY a USB data cable in my vehicle so it's all good!! Again, VERY helpful tutorial!

Hello Carter, I am an older lady trying to keep up with all the mod cons. I don't yet have a system like you have but looking at getting one not only for safety of using hands free but convenience of not having to pull over to make a call or receive a call as this can be hard to find a safe spot to do so as I don't touch my phone every when driving. For the time being I got a Bluetooth device that I can use for making calls and receiving calls using the stereo CD FM player that is in the car. I don't think this app will work with it but I am going to download it and give it a try. Thank you for this video it is the best I have seen. Oh I can use my spotify app that blew me away. As this was just a cheap device total of $30 AU for the phone holder and the Bluetooth device. Thank you kindly

Also: On the "Charging Hack" - if you have a newish Samsung Phone, you can use Bixby Routines to set the USB port function. You can change it from "USB Tethering, Transfering Files, Transfer Images, Midi, and CHARGING PHONE ONLY" - That last option can be toggled on or off based on any number of conditions, that you set. Look for Bixby Routines and find a tutorial - For Other Makes, LG, Sony, One Plus,etc., You can use the app "Tasker" for these scripted custom uses. This is where Android Phone users get the power user abilities that Apple doesn't cater to with their tendency to "dumb down" the interface and the underlying OS control.

Nicely done you! I can't tell you how much I appreciate not only the information you provided itself, but how well it was presented. I just finished watching a different video for Android Auto, and let me say that your video is head's above and hands down 100 times better the other one. You speak very well. The audio is not rushed and you are easily understood. Your use of singular vs. plural is accurate, and you provide descriptions and details the other video did not. People who don't speak well don't sound as intelligent as those who do which is very important regardless of what others may say. Individuals who speak well are more likely to be hired over someone who doesn't speak accurately or clearly. I found the information I needed as well as additional information that I'm sure will be useful once I pick up my new vehicle. Thank you for a job well done! Cheers!

@BlairAir5 жыл бұрын
Since this was posted, Android Auto has had a ground up redesign (Summer 2019) with a simpler, more logical, and LESS DISTRACTING - anything that reduces your distractions while driving is nothing less than life saving design, which sounds dramatic, and also has the benefit of being true. Touchscreens in general are large, bright interfaces full of interesting items, Unlike molded switches that you can feel for without looking, you must glance at a touch screen to use it, each and every time. They are also bright and reduce your view out the windshield at night. People with poor night vision have issues with slow reaction changes from bright to dark . Remember - All touchscreens can be switched off or greatly dimmed at night.
@Carterchevroletok5 жыл бұрын
Great info and yes a nice molded button is always my favorite over touchscreens. I tend to drop by cluster brightness down to the lowest possible at night and it helps to see out the window especially when you have darker window tint like many tend to have here in Oklahoma! Thanks for the post!

For messages...I use an app called Drive mode.. it can read and reply to incoming messages. Just wanted to let people know most of these phone commands work without the car.. Just stick the phone in a mount and use it directly, if you don't have a car with Android auto or apple car play.

Also I have OnStar protection plan without a wifi data plan, but I still can get a strong connection with my Equinox wifi. When parked in my driveway in reach of my house wifi and connected to it, all works well as shown in your video. But out of reach of my home wifi and connected to my Equinox wifi, I get a google message after asking google to "find ..." that "I have an unstable connection." Hey thank you for watching the video. As for other alternatives other than your current Onstar wifi and current mobile carrier the only other thing I can think of is a handheld GPS system like a Garmin etc. It does not sound like you are doing anything wrong setup wise so no way to diagnose anything there. Out here in Okarche, Ok we have terrible phone service and at times the Onstar wifi is spotty. Maybe contact Onstar and see if they are having connection issues with other members in your area???

As far as I know, the main upgrade in Android Auto is the ability to now view your entire contact list while at a stop unlike the previous version it was only a simplified version of your phonebook. As far as the new google play update I was not aware of that. I will need to research the differences to see what changes in the steps I would need to touch upon for a new updated how-to video. Absolutely love Android Auto. But I'll pass along a hard learned tip. I have a 2016 Camaro and I was having a monster battle with AA usually working but occasionally wouldn't work at all. Seems that because I had a flash drive of music always plugged in the adjoining USB port the radio HMI would only recognise that. After I unplugged the flash drive, AA always works fine. Leave the second USB port empty for best AA use. It's been a 3 month learning experience and a bunch of new cables to get this. Enjoy the AA

Great tip! Never would have thought of that. Thank you!

A charging only/no data transfer usb cable is an additional alternative to the 'hacks' to prevent autolaunch. If you ever charge at public spaces like airports this is good accessory. That said, frankly I'm amazed at how awful Android Auto is for navigation. Typical of geeky Google instructions are scant. Community groups are not support. The map screen is cluttered. When I voice searched along my proposed route for 'home' it started telling me about a movie; sigh. Couldn't find a way to save frequent routes. Route planning on the car screen is annoying at best. Fortunately, one can plan a route on the phone, then plug-in the phone to activate Android Auto. Just don't accidentally turn of the app losing the route.

The only thing I don't like about Android Auto is that you use data from your cell plan when using Google maps. The cars OEM navigation doesn't.

If you do not have unlimited data then using the built-in navigation is going to be your best bet especially for long trips
