I am a Belgian student in automotive engineering, we are already learning a lot about hybrid and electric vehicles. A lot of the mechanical aspects stay the same for electric cars. The noise and vibration aspect of a car becomes even more difficult for electric cars because in ice cars a lot of noise (for example from the gearbox) was masked by the loud engine.

Graduated as an automotive engineer in 2014. We already saw the evolution from mechanic to mechatronic systems back then. Moreover, apart from just the motor and energy source, many aspects remain very relevent or have even grown in importance: the drivetrain,vehicle control systems, vehicle dynamics, noise and vibrations, structural dynamics ... The curriculum evolves along with the technology: it's gotten even more interesting and the scope has widened.

@@Drive-n-Vibe Sure that advancement might come from graphene batteries or it might come from another type of new battery technology. It doesn't make sense to arbitrarily specify a promising battery technology rather than the performance metric you hope it will achieve. Would you not buy an electric car that meets all your requirements because it doesn't use graphene batteries? or are you going buy a car that doesn't meet your performance requirements just because it uses graphene batteries?
@Drive-n-Vibe3 жыл бұрын
@@henryfielding6961 i feel like this is just you being unnecessarily pedantic. Graphene is the most likely battery technology to replace lithium. Obviously if another form offered similar improvements in battery capacity, lifespan and charge time then that would work fine.

Also love the podcast guys, i'm in the same age bracket as Alex and i can really connect with your look on cars and the mechanical aspect of cars. I was surprised to hear your difficulty in expressing your love for cars. For me it's very easy to explain why i'm a petrolhead. Cars take up a big part of everyone's young life; as a young boy you play with toy cars and in your collection you always have your favorite ones. When you go round places you are driven round in cars and look outside the window to see (amongst others) other cars. Later you get to see cars on tv in various forms; knight rider, Herbie, Thunderbirds, Top gear... so your interest is peaked further. Eventually you stop dreaming and want something real. So you get to go to events, annual car shows, visit to a dealer when your dad brings the car in for service. Then you get your driving license and you get your first car, which takes up a very special spot in your life. You baby it, you get to enjoy your new freedom, you take care of the car, you go to various things with friends so you get all the new experiences thanks to your car. Then things get more serious when you want to customize your car, you want to be proud of it when you walk up to it when it's parked between a bunch of other cars. For me i also love the mechanical aspect so you want to expand your technical capabilities by maintaining it yourself, in the beginning lots of things go wrong but that's when you learn the most. However sometimes things don't go your way and you end up losing a car; due to an accident, due to wanting something different,... For me every time i got another car i actually hold on to the previous one (except for an accident where you cannot repair it - happened to my twice), i just cannot let go a car which brought me so many good things. And every time i got another car i gained more skills. In the beginning i could barely change oil and plugs, and today i'm doing a full restoration on a Chevy G30 van from 1978. It will be finished when spring sets in and i can repaint it and THEN i will have something rare which you rarely get to see on the road and will hopefully inspire other young people to get an interest in cars. BTW; if you search for the video Audi USA made for the introduction of the RS6 you will get my point, and also you'll be crying at the end of the video ;)

Steam cars were actually really common before 1920. It was the starter motor that killed them off. Petrol cars were hard to start (by handle etc.) and steam you had to wait 10 minutes for the boiler to get to temperature. Starter motors solved both problems.

Hi guys, I do Automotive Engineering at uni and they are beginning to prepare us more for the electrification of the industry. I have a number of more electrically oriented modules and in particular ones that focus on hybridisation. Once you can integrate an electric motor with the I.C.E engine, making the whole car electric isn't that much more difficult. Also Formula Student (which is a single seater racing competition held annually between universities) has an electric division which is constantly growing.

Gareth talking about that emergency braking reminded me of something that happened to my dad a few weeks ago. He was driving a rented Peugeot on the Autobahn, outside lane of course, and someone pulled out right in front of him. The Peugeot initiated an automatic emergency braking maneuver which he could not override (maybe there is a way, but with the Peugeot being a rental he was obviously unfamiliar with such car-specific behaviour), so he came to a dead stop on the outside lane of the german Autobahn. Luckily the car behind him seemed to be equipped with an automatic emergency braking system as well and thus was able to avoid a crash, but still, this was a bloody dangerous situation that could have ended in a very bad accident.

TLDR: we're working on alternative energy sources and how we can make current processes more efficient. Chemistry/chemical engineering courses are being tuned to take advantage of these emerging sources to become more relevant to graduate jobs in the changing environmental job market. Not an auto engineer, but I'm a chemical engineer/chemist. more and more of our work has been moved away from oil and gas (O&G) technologies towards energy storage, green hydrogen production and biomass stuff. so our focus has changed from oil and gas finding and exploitation to greater efficiency in what oil we have/finding alternate sources for these chemicals. enhanced oil recovery is a key tech as most pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and other key organics are produced from petrol chemicals so oil extraction probably won't go away its just going to be much more efficient. Biomass processing can be used to produce a wide range of biofuels not just biodiesel but next gen fuels like fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) (which are sulfur free), alcohols (meth, eth, but) and furans (jet fuels) so we'll probably keep classic cars going, the fuel price might just go up like buying race fuel to keep them going. Although governments are reluctant in allowing companies to plant crops for fuel production (in the UK at least, AUs and the US are way more up for it so E85 pumps, UK is E5 😑) so alcohol fuels are not widely available in some countries. This might change with increased focus on environment but O&G companies will stifle any and all competition. green hydrogen is hydrogen just produced from water splitting, this is currently hugely demanding energetically. the majority of hydrogen produced currently is produced by methane oxidation to produce CO2 and H2, grey hydrogen just releases this CO2 which is just natural gas power with extra steps...blue hydrogen stores this CO2 but still CO2, currently these methods are far more efficient than green H2 but with emerging tech greenH2 will become cheaper to produce than current energy sources but time will tell.
