I'm sure that you have heard of Jack O'Connor , well I've bought every book that Gentleman published and you have come closer than just about anyone to describing the truth about the old black powder rounds as anyone who wasn't born before the 2nd World War . Only thing I might add is that some cartridges also had the bullet weight in the names , i.e. 45-70-405. One thing you didn't get into was shotguns , and the dram system , I've read about it , and it's still strange . Anyway , nice work , your knowledge is vast , your delivery is wonderful !

I was at a gun show years ago and saw this cute little revolver, a Smith & Wesson. Glanced at the barrel which said .38 and I stopped reading at that point, assuming it was a .38 Special. Took it home, it turned out to be a little I-frame in nice shape. I opened the cylinder, dropped a .38 Special (aka .38 S&W Special) cartridge in, and it stopped a couple of tenths of an inch short of going all the way in. I took a closer look at the barrel and it said, ".38 S&W", no "Special". Huh. Anyway I bought one box of that, shot a few rounds, and stuck the gun in the back of the safe. The ".38 S&W" is not in the ".38 S&W Special" family of cartridges! To me the way to go, for somebody just getting into this, is to simply be aware of all the names of the cartridge designation of the gun you own. If you have a gun carelessly designated as a "9mm", it is probably officially the 9mm Luger AKA 9mm Parabellum AKA 9x19, but it is NOT the 9x18 or 9x17 or 9mm Makarov or 9mm Largo. So when you know all the names you know what cartridges to buy and what to avoid. One of those official names should be stamped somewhere on the gun.
@logitimate5 жыл бұрын
Added fun: 9x19 is 9x19 Parabellum . . . unless it's 9x19 Glissenti. Which is completely identical in external cartridge dimensions to 9x19 Parabellum, but has a substantially lower maximum pressure!
@logitimate5 жыл бұрын
Also the weirdness where you can't generally shoot 9x17 (.380 ACP) in a 9x19 handgun, despite the bullet diameter being the same, but you can (generally) shoot it in a 9x18 Makarov handgun, despite the latter having a bullet diameter that's about 0.3 mm larger
@filianablanxart83054 жыл бұрын
And it gets even trickier with ".38" s . The .38S&W was a very popular ctg up through the mid 20th century , and there was strong demand for revolvers in that caliber, and Colt wanted a share of that . But Colt refused to stamp the words " Smith & Wesson " on a Colt revolver , so they renamed it .38 New Police. Likewise the .32 S&W Long proved a much more popular ctg than the non-interchangable .32 Long Colt . So Colt remained the S&W ctg to .32 New Police . The .45 Colt vs .45 Long Colt is still controversial , but there is historical evidence . In the early days of smokeless , many brands of .45 Colt ammo was made with substantially shorter cases ( and much weaker ) Remington continued to load the ( much more powerful ) full length case , with a full load of Black Powder until WWII . Any shooter who walked into any gun store and asked for the " .45 Long " everyone knew what they were talking about . While .45 Long Colt was never marked on a gun or headstamp , Mike Venturino and John Taffin have discovered period advertisments , and price lists referring to .45 Long Colt .

.45 Colt confusion: There Was a short .45 cartridge. This was in the .45 Scofield by S&W. It has a shorter cylinder and an alternate standard standard for the U. S. Army. The Scofield cartridge would chamber and fire in both Scofield and Colt revolvers, just like .44 Special in .44 Magnum revolvers. This is where the confusion started and why people started calling the .45 Colt the "long" Colt.

.44 caliber was originally .44 inch diameter. This was a step-base bullet like a .22 rimfire cartridge. This was a S&W .44. S&W sold this to the Russian government. They asked for an inside-lubricated bullet. Instead of redesigning the revolver. They shrank the bullet diameter to .429 and kept the same case diameter. The .44 American, .44 Special, and .44 Magnum followed the same pattern, only with different case lengths and powder charges, eliminating externally lubricated step-base bullets like the .22 rimfire short, long, and long rifle. The .38 revolver cartridges went through the same metamorphosis, which is why the S&W .38 Special has the .357 inch diameter bullet.

Well, Paul admits he only scratched the surface - for example the .45-70 as issued to the troops was in at least several flavors - one was a gallery load with a wooden bullet for indoor practice. one was issued to Cavalry troops .45-70-405 and foot soldiers wer given .45-65-500 which as you can guess is the same case but with different powder charges and bullet weights. I'm no expert but people have spent many years documenting this stuff. I remember in the 70's we would get 308 match ammo and pull the bullets and put in Sierra bullets (Mexican match) until the AMU just started ordering the ammo with Sierra Bullets.

I read that the ".38 caliber" designation came from the 1800s, when some catridges had heeled bullet (same diameter as the case,outside lubricated,like 22lr) and the actual diameter of the bullet was close to .38 but eventually changed to inside lubricated and .357 bore but the .38 designation remained the same.
@mederichebert6 жыл бұрын
From what I've read, you are indeed correct and this is also the reason for the 44 being a 42
@MaximRecoil5 жыл бұрын
That's exactly right. The original parent case of the .38 Special is the .38 Short Colt, which has a case neck diameter of 0.379", and originally used a heel-based bullet that was 0.375" diameter. 0.375" diameter rounded to 2 digits = 0.38". All of the children of the .38 Short Colt (.38 Long Colt and .38 Special) also have a case neck diameter of 0.379".

@gaw50247 жыл бұрын
Educated guess but here I'll try. I won't limit to three choices for reasons of there are quite a few 50+ year old hunting rifles in the US that go into the woods every year. So in no particular order these are the calibers I personally know of multiple local stores having on hand year round. 1) 30-06 2) .308 Winchester/ 7.62 NATO 3) .223 Remington/5.56 NATO 4) 30-30 5) .243 6) 30-40 ( only one big company still makes it, yet I've never had trouble finding it) 7) .22 long rifle For pistol I can narrow down slightly as that market is driven mostly by police and military use. 1) 9x19mm Luger 2) .40 Smith and Wesson 3) .45 ACP ( Automatic Colt Pistol) 4) .22 long rifle 5) .357 Magnum 6) .38 Special 7) .380 ACP/ 9x17mm /9mm kurtz/etc 8) .44 magnum Again I must reiterate this is only an educated guess from a guy in the rural midwest.

That's a skill I wish I had. And yes, it's a lost art. It was difficult to find someone to work on the thunderbird.

Not a lost art. Just find an old hot rodder and he'll have it humming in no time short. I learned at the local race shop

Paul Harrell if you’re not already familiar with Uncle Tonys Garage I would highly suggest it... though he does not articulate as well as you, his no nonsense non-marketing approach to auto mech is unmatched.... also he has several videos to teach even the dumbest of us to tune a Naturally aspirated vehicle....

Interesting you mention the haters of the metric system as there are only 3 countries which have not officially adopted the metric system United States, Myanmar and Liberia. I always find it amusing when US shooting videos always shoot 2 Litre drink bottles. Once again a great video!
@PaulHarrell7 жыл бұрын
LOL I haven't met many Liberians, but I've met a lot of Americans that look at me like I'm from another planet when I tell them, "The deer was about a hundred meters away."
@DavesIneosGrenadier7 жыл бұрын
Here in Australia we changed to metric in 1974 but I still refer to people as being 6 foot tall but weighing 120 kilograms. I notice that somehow the US spells Metres and Litres with the RE back to front as well. I recently purchased a CZ75 Shadow 2 and it is a fantastic gun.

Dave Boreland shouldn't the UK be on that list too? The Imperial System is very much in use there
@rbrtck7 жыл бұрын
+chrismc410 No, because they have officially adopted the metric system, even though many there still use the imperial system.
@rbrtck7 жыл бұрын
+Dave Boreland Yeah, the 2 liter soda bottle thing is a rare exception in the US. I guess the manufacturers made the decision to "go global" at the time, and somehow it stuck, while few others have even bothered. Note that soda cans in the US are still 12 oz as a standard, but like a great number of products the metric equivalent is listed next to it (often in parentheses). So there is some effort to familiarize Americans with the metric system, as there is in schools, but frankly we don't like to be told how to do things. :) Personally, I am completely familiar with the metric system, and use it almost exclusively for science and engineering, but for everything else I use the US customary system (which is similar but not identical to the imperial system) that Americans typically use, and I've memorized all of the common conversion factors for convenience. For me the US customary system just feels more "natural" to use in regular life. It could be that I'm more used to it, but I've been using metric since childhood as well, so I don't think it's just that. For one thing, the units generally just seem better sized to match our perceptions, such as differences in weight and temperature, as opposed to the metric system, which is designed more for mathematical convenience and has units that are based on a scientific perspective rather than human factors.

If anyone ever has questions just take some time and read reloading manuals. You'll learn so much; or be confused even worse. I hope everybody can catch Pauls little hints of humor in his videos. They always crack me up!

I realized that fairly quickly. I like this video and gave referred it to a few people who were getting into reloading. Your video shows proof that you should never assume anything, ever. I use the example of never put a 7.62x39 bullet in a 7.62x51nato case. Do your research. Anyhow good job on explaining some of the confusing names given to cartridges.

I have now watched all of your videos up to and beyond this point and I must say, EXCELLENT work on the no BS no expensive prop setups. One addition, I have heard the 30WCF was re named the 30-30 due to other manufactures not wanting WCF stamped on their "other brand" rifles.

Paul, I know you don't like making videos like this, but I must tell you how much I appreciate them. There are very few sources out there that can break things down as clearly as you do. I subscribe to several gun channels, but none have advanced my knowledge of firearms as significantly as yours. Thanks, man!

I'm sorry I have to disagree with you, I own a 38/40 and it is not a .375 caliber it is a .401 for some reason they did the designation backwards it is a 40 caliber with 38 grains of black powder I have researched this

Hello Mr.Harrell My name Patrick. I consider myself an advanced beginner in firearms and ballistics. More in knowledge and less in practical experience. I wanted to first say Thank You, for your service. Secondly thank you for deciding to produce your videos, I am a sponge when learning from your videos. I really enjoy your calm nature and educated well spoken manner of approaching subject matter. Thanks again and God Bless You.

I am always impressed with the information you know and present it in a digestable manner. I watch these older videos to help fill my knowledge on subjects, and this is a fascinating window into the world of cartridge destinations. Every time I turn around, I hear about more cartridges that I have never heard of before. It doesn't help that there are always new cartridges created by manufacturers, and then there is the wild cat community, but thanks for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us!
