Bad play by White in opening, thought he was going to try reversed French, surely even amateurish idea of an early Q-Side fianchetto would be better, I'm an unorthodox low graded player, but Fabiano must come up with something better against The King's Indian or open E4!

thanks for the continued videos Jerry. you're the reason why I continue to still play. I did have a question for you. how long did it take you to achieve your NM title? do you recall at what age you were 1400, 1500, 1800 then to 2200? I'm just curious if you had steady chess growth as you got older or did you ever have any slumps and what did you do to break out of them?

I am continually impressed by your ability to explain complex positions concisely, with concomitant alternate lines reduced to (what then seems to be) the obvious. If I had the opportunity to avail myself of your teaching, and you were of a similar mind to provide it, I would seek your guidance and insight, convinced thoroughly in your skill to craft in me the better player lurking somewhere within. Thanks for this video, and for all of your ongoing efforts to distill the complications of chess to their essential constituents.

Jerry, I know you said in reply to someone else that you were "streamlining" your layout or something and that we can always see from the title who is white and who is black, but the names weren't distracting at all and this is honestly just a little bit of unneeded aggravation. I watch videos fullscreen, often with autoplay. And although I do often give you my undivided attention, like many of your viewers, I also appreciate having you on as soothing background noise, only to periodically stop whatever it is I'm doing when I get frustrated and pay attention to the game. And in these moments having to get up and cross the room to find out (or remind me) which player is which color is... kinda a drag. It's your channel, man, and I guess at the end of the day it's not the end of the world. I just don't think anyone else here is actually in favor of this change.

Stef SK En passant. If a pawn moves 2 spaces on its first move so that it is on the same number file as a pawn on the opposing side, then the opposing pawn will be able to take it diagonally. Sorry if my explanation is not clear.

@mordredhcrotmg1599
@mordredhcrotmg1599 6 жыл бұрын
(Analysis at 17:34) I had a question about the star-move and why black didn't go e2 for a check but then I realized this is what would have happened: Re2. Kd3. At this point, if black promotes c1, white does Ke2, and black loses the Rook. OR BACKTRACK: black promotes c1. Q isn't defended. White takes Q with Rc1. Now black is left with King @ b3, Rook @ e2 and Pawn @ a7, whereas white is left with King @ d3, Rook @ c1, Pawn @ g4 and Pawn @ h5. Keep going: black's Rook @ e2 has to move or captured by white's King @ d3. Let's say Rg2. Then white goes Rh1. White's file h Pawn is defended all the way. Don't forget, black's file a Pawn is at least 6 moves from promotion and can be taken by white's Rook or fresh Queen. White's Rook or file h Pawn will have taken black's Rook at that point. Then, black's King is alone and white has King, Queen, and Rook for an easy checkmate. And even if black's rook wasn't taken, white would have the advantage with a King, Queen, Rook vs black's King, Rook, Pawn.

Question for Jerry: I'm new to chess and it absolutely defies me. However, I set up a board at lichess.org with the endgame you propose and have been playing Rook to h7 against the computer (Stockfish AI level 8) for hours. Each time, the computer plays Rook to c5 the very next move and everything falls apart. No matter what I do, I lose. The white Rook on c5 prevents a7 from advancing. Rather than checking the black King, c5 prevents any progress other than the white King munching on Pawns and preventing interference by the black King. In every variation I try, white's Rook eventually lands on h3 to prevent interference from the black Rook. Am I doing something wrong, or is this actually a winning position for white?

For the first star move pop quiz, I would say that rook e2 would be a good move. Its check, the only move for white queen is to take e3. Then c2 promotes. Most likely a loss of the rook, but white has a queen. The star moves you pointed out were most likely better.
