17:01 I was really glad to see the possible stalemate. So often, possible stalemates get ignored or not commented on because nobody would win. Sometimes you may not be able to win but you might be able to keep from losing. Jerry, you are by far one the best commentators and narrators in online chess on KZbin. Keep up the good work! Thank you!

Thank you for pointing out 9:57. I enjoyed thinking about it. Carlsen spent almost a minute on that move, and must have seen that his queen could be forced away from g4. That suggests one of two things. One might be that he considered the position with his queen on e2 and the black pawn on f5 to be superior in some way to the same position with the pawn on f7. Maybe there's some long-term weakness he might hope to exploit? Opening up the king position is worth something? That reasoning would be a terribly interesting thing to hear. The other option is that he considered the positions to be close enough to equal that any deficiency is made up for by being one step closer to move 40. And that's a neat idea, taking a slightly longer way to reach essentially the same position just to buy time on the clock. It's the kind of thing you'd expect from someone who plays a lot of blitz... though mere mortals would do it with crass checks rather than an elegant positional move which is nonetheless forcing, like Qg4.

Interesting, at least to me, was how long Caruana held on in a queen endgame with multiple pawns down, I suppose hoping for a perpetual check, threefold repeated moves or a stalemate (as the one you pointed out towards the end). At their level of play, is there not a point at which hoping for a massive blunder by the opponent is somehow tantamount to an insult? IAC: tyvm for the many uploads and concise analyses, The depth and complexity of the discussions can be followed by very average players such as myself, and the lengths of the videos fit very nicely into the free time slots allowed during a busy work day and equally busy private life.

Great game! I feel like in most games Queens don't make it to Endgame, so this one was particularly instructive. I was wondering, in the end, if this 10min thinking for the Rook move was really that important. It seemed like every major piece got exchanged pretty fast, without much movement needed from the Kings. Awesome reasoning for the stalemate! I like that you reason that way, thinking of the opportunities of both parties on how to take advantage of every situation.

Would be useful to explain (even just briefly) captures like 9. exd5 where it is unclear why the capture was played at that specific point. I usually never understand how they decide when to release the tension even if not forced.
@reubenosman2288
@reubenosman2288 6 жыл бұрын
It's all just opening theory. on 9. exd5 You could say it gives a semi open file for white's rook when he castles, also opens up some diagonals for the bishop.
@alephnull4044
@alephnull4044 6 жыл бұрын
Of course it's theory, but most viewers don't know the theory and so commentators still explain much of it. And I'm not really after general obvious reasons, I'm asking why exactly at that point was the tension released.

It's standard in classical tournaments to add time to the clocks after move 40, but it depends on the tournament. For Norway Chess "Players receive 100 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 61"
