Now that's a spatula! Try using the knife as a scraper rather than a cutting edge. 90 degree using your off hand to hold the blade.

Sweet work dude, to get a finer finish i've learnt to take off finer & finer shavings whilst slowing the carving process down, and also to work with the grain in the wood rather then against it ~Peace~

Hey Scrambled O, another great video, thanks! I've found that using the spine of my knife as a scraper is great for knocking off those ridges without removing extra material, and you can get it pretty close to perfect with that. I thought it came out really well though!

Cool idea. I love carving spoons and spatulas with longer handles for the same reason. Couple of quick suggestions. Split the round in half before you start carving. Then remove the pith (center "vein" in the wood). This will help prevent cracking as the carved object dries. When removing wood (axe and knife) from the handle, start at the end and just carve a few inches, then move up a few inches and blend those together, repeat along the full length. This really helps prevent those tear outs you experience. Check out videos from Ben Orford and Zed Outdoors on spoon carving. Going from a log to blank with an axe is no small feat. Keep up the great work.

Like the idea of a long handle. I’ll be using that. If you make the bottom edge at a bit of an angle, you can make one that’s great getting into the corners of pots, for those meals that need constant stirring.

Hey scrambled, sweet looking spatula! That long handle seems like it will come in handy. It might be cool to carve a pot hook on the end of the handle so the spatula could serve dual purposes. Also on the topic of getting a smoother handle... it seems like you might be able to use the 90 degree spine on your knife to scrape away small bits of wood, almost like a cabinet scraper. Maybe try holding the knife at a 45 degree angle to the wood and scrape away until you take down the high spots and smooth out the surface a bit. I've never tried this, but it seems like it might work. Love the content! Keep up the great work!

Nice job Bro! I really like the long version. I always carve kitchen size utensils, I hadn't thought to make a longer one. It is always so relaxing to sit in camp and carve things like this. BTW, Those are some fine tools you are working with. I have the GFB Small Forest Axe also (mine is stamped AS) like yours and it is one of my favorite tools of all time. Take care brother.

about your handle feel the grain direction and u can use sand to sand it smooth and round, what we often do too if we have little time we lay the burning coals on the spatula and let it burn quick some material away and then use the knife to finish it off. but never cut towards your body, that has most of the time when you don't need it a bad ending, an other tip is invest in a small woodcarving knive, that makes you feel the grain direction better, when the restanse comes the you change direction, sorry for my bad English i am Dutch and living in Norway so mixing up is normal hahahaa ooh and try thinner layers to cut, you would think it takes longer but the upsit is most of the time the case. You always welcome to one of my woodcarving courses in Norway :)

Man where's the Eldris I thought you were going to use it?!?! hahaha Nice work though. On the carving questions, to get the finish you are looking for it just takes time and patience. You have to really focus at picking a small piece of edge and work that off. Small short cuts and then you will be able to round it or square it up without taking off too much at a time. I tend to use my thumb on the spine a lot to control my speed and pressure, your thumb will get sore but thats what calluses are for haha. Looking forward to the next one brother!

I enjoy your channel, I am an avid you tuber and have about 75 different. Channels that I subscribe to and I enjoy your videos a lot, you have some humor mixed in with the learning and you always seem to be in the outdoors and doing practical tasks. I have gotten bored with those sitting in their living room opening boxes, I am glad those are there to get opinions about certain products , but you are in laboratory setting, thanks for good vids. I've been thinking of starting my own channel , any hints or ideas how to get started ? Thanks , Ken

The best and most efficient way to to process a long log like that for crafting is a good draw blade. It will allow you to do more and have less fatigue. ;)

why didn't you slit the wood three times til you have a straight plank and cut the spatula out of that , saved you loads of time and energy

Try holding your knife edge perpendicular to the wood and pushing away. With a shaving sharp blade it makes a finish comparable to 1000 grit sandpaper.
