I'm a very beginner wood carver and this was very helpful thank you!! I have cut myself already to! The tools go through like I'm butter! Its insane! Heck of a learning curve. Lol. My issue with gloves is my hands are smaller than my childrens so finding gloves that actually fit that dont hender my carving is a struggle.

The gloves can be uncomfortable. I found some that are intended for working with steel that aren't too bad.

A lot of people use a self-stick wrap (like a roll of gauze) of rubbery material, such as "3M Vetwrap" (to wrap horse's/other animals legs for protection). The Chinese clone products are just as good, less expensive, and come in a variety of colors. You'd wrap your fingertips with this as a layer of protection from knife cuts.

Good vision! Seeing it in the wood. Nice work! I’ve got to get back at it. I have more cottonwood bark than I know what to do with. All locally found. Bark here in southern Indiana doesn’t get more than about 3 1/2 thick. I’ve sold hundred through local art galleries over the years but covid has those closed as well. If you haven’t carved faces in cottonwood bark you should try. It’s completely different animal. Any bad habits such as twisting a tool will break it. Not physically demanding. Good camping weather should be showing up soon. Take care!

Your right about the overall form first, took me awhile to get that but it helped me a lot. I carve found wood and caring a folding saw in my truck. Carving a branch of walnuts now, kinda hard on the tools. Great video thank you.

Walnut is even harder than cherry. I hope your tools hold up. :)

Ok.... That is cool. A wood spirit with a "Cigar." Nice! All Kidding aside. Your work is an inspiration. Although I am in my mid fifties I hope to "grow up" one day to be able to create stuff as cool as you do.

LOL!! Well, I am in my fifties as well so I am sure you can do it!

Great video! You remind me a lot of myself! Have you ever tried using a darker stain/oil first, wiping most off, then after it dries, apply your topcoat or lighter stain, it will really showcase the effort and detail you out in 👍. I’m def subscribing 🤘

Really great work! The final look is stunning. Do you use any polish to "cure" the wood? like anything that would ensure it doesn't rot on you or anything
@IdRatherMakeItMyself-Net Жыл бұрын
I just make sure it is well dried and then apply either boiled linseed oil or some other finish. If wood stays dry it won't rot.
