I've watched you with Doug Linker doing the coffee show together. I've been watching him for a long time. He's why I got started. But I've watched others too. But I like what you have done on wood carvings.

Thanks for the video. This will help with my face carves. I recently had to have 6 big willows felled on our property. Going to be learning to use a chainsaw, so lots of practice wood. Power carving willow, it's a fuzzy wood, but I'll try it with some hand tools too. Willows are famous for being self pruning trees, meaning they drop their branches regularly. So if you need some wood, ask someone that has willows if you can clean up the dropped branches for them. The willows in my yard are always shedding branches.

Another excellent video, thanks a lot. Was reassuring to hear you talk about wood hardness. I had a feeling the wood I deface in attempts at carving (Oak, Cherry etc.) was harder to work with than that fancy kiln-dried basswood but was wondering if my sharpening and carving skills were just rubbish. Conclusion: it's a bit of both.

I've made most of my own knives out of necessity (I can't afford everything I want), but the blade you are using on this willow carving fascinates me. is that a Flex cut brand, and what do they call that style of blade? it looks like a drop point camp knife, only smaller.

Alec just watching this one again, and the penny dropped, just wondering why you used your scew knife for removing the bark 🤔? I would and would have thought that you might have used a sloyd knife for the initial removal, any dirt or grit possibly being present. My scew knife arrived yesterday ( Thursday 2nd May ) What a beauty it is too ,little touch up on the strop and it's amazingly sharp and beautiful fine preesice cuts ,glad that i watched your video. Now need to find some suitable wood to try getting a face correct. Thanks again buddy 👍 Cheers mate Les.

how much does a tree limb have to dry out before you can carve in it? If you carve in it while it is still wet will the carving split as the wood dries????
@CertifiedSunset2 ай бұрын
Depends on the wood and what season it's harvested. Hardwoods like to dry slowly, some people let them dry for 6-12 months depending on thickness. Soft woods don't often have to dry nearly as along since they tend to be porous and the water can dissipate easier. A trick I learned from my old woodshop teacher is to bury your work pieces in a bed of dry sawdust or wood shavings, it will help keep your piece from drying out too fast and splitting. It's nota 100% surefire method, but it does help from my limited experience.
@CastisV9 ай бұрын
I'm always afraid the bark of the wood will harm the knife and dull it out. Do you usually polish it up after clearing the area?
