Carving oak leaves and acorns in to a leather belt

I was making a carved leather belt and felt that this was a good opportunity to make a video about how to carve oak leaves. There are many different patterns available to leather workers that feature oak leaves of all different shapes and this is only one of the ways to carve them. It is my opinion that this type of motif is so common in leather tooling because of the link between oak trees and the process of preserving hides at a tannery to produce vegetable tanned leather for carving.
I am always working on building something and try to average a KZbin video once a week. Most often leather work, but I have also posted videos on black smithing, knife making, casting, and even how I make soap. Be sure to Subscribe if you are interested in any of these topics, or just making things in general.

Your video is really amazing and helpful! I was trying to make a video about leather crafts and refer to some video clips from your video. I will cite the source so don't worry! Thanks a lot if you are ok with that.

For carving I just wet the leather with a sponge. I actually want the leather to rest until it looks like it is almost dry, but still feels cool and moist when I touch it. If it still looks soaked your tool impressions won't be as sharp, and your finished carving will look blurry and lack depth. Fully cased leather is something I do if I am shaping it, but it needs to dry for hours before it is right to carve and stamp.
