Such helpful tips! Especially the one about adding clay to bulk up a thinner piece. This is very reminiscent of a crystal vase my grandmother had. 😍 It’s really lovely & interesting to look at with the high and low areas, and the heads entwining. Thank you! 💜💜

@@annruel1982 I tend to just go head on into a project and then work out the details as I go. I definitely need to improve on this. 💜

Hey Swan! Thank you so much!! I was inspired by something similar that I saw. I thought it might be a design which would inspire someone who has wanted to try their hand at carving cutouts to actually give it a try.

Thanks Ann! You're always full of beautiful ideas! If I may be so bold as to offer a few suggestions...I can't take credit for all, as some were given to me by a potter who does a lot of carving. When you are doing the relief carving, would it be safer to do that before you carve out the cut-out areas? And when I cut out pieces, I will often leave the pieces in until I'm done cutting all the open work, then punch them out at once. There's less chance of breaking the pieces I want to keep that way. Finally, when I cut, I angle my cuts so that the face is narrower than the back, giving the illusion of a thinner piece (I hope I'm explaining that clearly!). Anyway, your egrets are very graceful, and the piece is beautiful. I can see that with flowers poking out from under the necks as well as out the top, creating a light, airy feel to an arrangement. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Pat. Great tips for sure!! Yes you explained them very well. I understand all of what you said. You are so right about all of those. You are inspiring me to make an Intermediate Carving Cutouts video for those who want to get more intricate with their cuts.

Thank you. Your carving demos are my favorite. Suggestion: I'm playing with designs for solar lights. I found almost nothing for ceramic solar on the web. Would love to see what you do.

Thank YOU for watching Jackie. Solar lights? Tell me what direction you are going with there. Do you mean you are thinking about like ceramic holders for solar lights? I have seen something like this before. Are you thinking about carving out pieces and then putting solar lights inside them so they will shine out of the crevices? I am intrigued.

@annruel1982 I can't figure out how to send a picture. My first effort is a flattened canister with the light bulb, including the solar receptor fitting on top as if screwed in. Boring. Thinking about making your bird vase with a holder for the stake or filling it with marbles to hold the stake in place. I will have to experiment to see how far the receptor can go inside. Lowes has a number of different light bulb configuations.
