Carving the sculptural table "Marbled Murrelets". David Groth documentary, chapter 4 of 9.

In this video segment I will be carving two myrtlewood root sections and joining them into one sculptural table. The primary concern is that the two pieces of wood are shapes that can not only be joined but compliment each other sculpturally. Note: Sometimes 'rot' in the wood adds more color. For example, Cherry that has been laying in the elements for a year or so has beautiful reddish and brown tones in the wood.

Can you explain how your kiln works? Enjoy the videos

My kiln is a big box insulated with foam core. I have two heat lamps inside the porcelain water tank of an old toilet. The heat lamps are connected to a rheostat for controlling the temperature. Also there is a greenhouse temperature gauge with the sensor in the kiln and the temperature reading outside the kiln (available from hardware stores). On top of the water tank I have two stoneware bowls that each hold approximately one gallon of water. For the first two weeks I keep the bowls refilled with water and the kiln temperature at approximately 130 degrees Fahrenheit. The next three to four weeks (depending on the thickness of wood, usually not thicker than 3-4 inches) I keep the kiln dry while maintaining the 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

hye david, so happy about this video!! :) i have some qustions about the kiln if you be willing to share some info about it... the two heat lamps, are they located at the bottom of the toilet container? in witch dirction are they situated? and if so, how does the heat spreads in the kiln? and another qustion when you fill water its regular water or hot? and last one, is it possible to dry tree trunks that are more than 3-4 inch in a kiln like that? thanks a lot for everything !!

The heat lamps face up and are located at the bottom of the toilet container. The heat seams to spread reasonably evenly and I fill the the pottery bowls with hot water. I've found that trying to dry wood thicker than 3-4 inches causes the wood to crack. Bay is particularly stable with this process and some woods will crack even at 3 inches or less.
