Oh goodness! Having safety gloves is important for myself as I sometimes loose track of where my hands are the more I focus in on my projects. While they arent 100% protection, they have made what could have been serious injuries to minor cuts just needing a bandaid

the only time i ever whittled was about 3 weeks ago, I made a little spatula for raticide paste for some traps, using a box cutter and a tiny scrap of fir from the neighbor's attic. Those 5 minutes of whittling calmed me more than any meds or meditation technique my therapist suggested. now I'm all about watching youtube and buying a knife and whittling the crap of any wood I find while imagining said wood to be my boss

Cheaper blades are good for beginners because they teach you how to Sharpen your tools. Sharpening is one of the most important things you can learn if you want to enjoy working with wood whether it be whittling or anything else. This is my advice for anybody who wants to start with woodwork.

I whittled a wooden coat hanger that i could place into metal holes at work and keep my jacket clean. I used pieces that chipped off pallets in the warehouse and i went through quite a few of them. Seeing this now. I’m seeing a lot of the techniques you used are very similar to what i would do and it almost came naturally with doing it so much. Just thought that was interesting.

It's good that you show your 'war carving' wounds. I have been carving for better than 25 years on and off, and always find new ways to get cut while carving in places I thought never existed...lol! It's not that carving is a risky thing, it's that 'human nature' of bravado takes over. Silly things when you drop your guard. I think because I take my time now and more so 'a little wiser', I don't get 'war carving' wounds as much.

His name was Les Visor, and he was a proud member of the Texas Woodcarver’s Guild. I love that his work is on display in at least a few places, I have a few of his works myself. Pieces of Pop.

About a decade ago I made a dollhouse size rocking horse for a friend. This year I bought myself whittling knives and set about trying to carve a pipe out of some wild cherry- not recommended XD. I’ve moved on to some projects with softer woods and they’ve been much nicer, and I have indeed collected my first go of cuts from errant slips. I got Beavercraft knives and did chip them up a bit on that old gnarled wild cherry, but they cut fine still so I’m happy! It’s a nice little pastime, thanks for the video, it helped me correct some of my mistakes before they became bad habits ^-^

Huh this is really eye opening. I've always made a distinction between whittling and carving where stuff like this is carving and whittling is just going at whatever stick is handy with your pocket knife to pass the time, so the more specialized knives and proper wood blanks are a surprise to se in a whittling video.

Howdy! I do have plans for making a dragon tutorial, however I'm struggling to make an easy to follow process for beginners. There will be a video, but I dont know when it will be yet.

@@CarvingisFun Thanks, if you’re having trouble making it easier for beginners, that’s fine. I cont make you work harder or faster ( to be honest I might not even be able to do the fox which is my favorite beginning sculpture you’ve made. Also you do work really hard on this and I don’t want to rush you)Take all the time you need, I don’t even have a knife for whittling yet so I’m not rushing anything. It’s your work so if you need time that’s fine. Love the videos man. Honestly keep up the great work, you’re amazing!

Thank you so much for this! I've been wanting to get into whittling but there aren't enough videos talking about what you need to get and do in order to get started. This was so helpful and you've earned a new subscriber :D

I just came across this very good inspirational video and wanted to share - I am not whittling at all, just thought about it and saw the Victorinox. I use the Swisschamp for 15 years or more, and used it many times for many hobbies I do. The lock on the blade (Slip Joint I think?) is VERY dangerous (Like he said, no matter how good you are) and you should think about it before trying to start with it, that it because it is readily available most of the time, and you dont know how to hold a blade (or think you know) and next up is the blade closed on you with great force and that's...that's really bad. I did get bit a few times in my life but since I got the blade snap at me because I was probably an idiot, looking at the closed knife with my finger 2mm away for its path...Damn, please be careful guys, and thank you sir for the great video.

Just got my Helvie knives in the mail. Upgraded from the beavercraft and it’s a world of difference. The thinner knife is good got mouthes and eyes. The Helvies are expensive but I’d say they are worth the money and wait.

Awesome video! I always wanted to try making something with woods but all the wood working guides are so intimidating with so many tools and such. But this video is way simpler and actually quite accessible for someone like me who doesn't have much space nor money. Thank you for great video!

I just jumped in blind last night. Had no idea what I wanted to make, kinda just started cutting to see what would start taking shape. I ended up with some kind of featureless cat head as the result of my first session. I'm definitely going to need to have a long watch session of these types of videos because I had no idea how to make any cut past shaving off tiny pieces.
