Oh goodness! Having safety gloves is important for myself as I sometimes loose track of where my hands are the more I focus in on my projects. While they arent 100% protection, they have made what could have been serious injuries to minor cuts just needing a bandaid

the only time i ever whittled was about 3 weeks ago, I made a little spatula for raticide paste for some traps, using a box cutter and a tiny scrap of fir from the neighbor's attic. Those 5 minutes of whittling calmed me more than any meds or meditation technique my therapist suggested. now I'm all about watching youtube and buying a knife and whittling the crap of any wood I find while imagining said wood to be my boss

It's good that you show your 'war carving' wounds. I have been carving for better than 25 years on and off, and always find new ways to get cut while carving in places I thought never existed...lol! It's not that carving is a risky thing, it's that 'human nature' of bravado takes over. Silly things when you drop your guard. I think because I take my time now and more so 'a little wiser', I don't get 'war carving' wounds as much.

About a decade ago I made a dollhouse size rocking horse for a friend. This year I bought myself whittling knives and set about trying to carve a pipe out of some wild cherry- not recommended XD. I’ve moved on to some projects with softer woods and they’ve been much nicer, and I have indeed collected my first go of cuts from errant slips. I got Beavercraft knives and did chip them up a bit on that old gnarled wild cherry, but they cut fine still so I’m happy! I just came across this very good inspirational video and wanted to share - I am not whittling at all, just thought about it and saw the Victorinox. I use the Swisschamp for 15 years or more, and used it many times for many hobbies I do. The lock on the blade (Slip Joint I think?) is VERY dangerous (Like he said, no matter how good you are) and you should think about it before trying to start with it, that it because it is readily available most of the time, and you dont know how to hold a blade (or think you know) and next up is the blade closed on you with great force and that's...that's really bad. I did get bit a few times in my life but since I got the blade snap at me because I was probably an idiot, looking at the closed knife with my finger 2mm away for its path...Damn, please be careful guys, and thank you sir for the great video.

I just jumped in blind last night. Had no idea what I wanted to make, kinda just started cutting to see what would start taking shape. I ended up with some kind of featureless cat head as the result of my first session. I'm definitely going to need to have a long watch session of these types of videos because I had no idea how to make any cut past shaving off tiny pieces.

Great and clear introduction! Thank you for this video, I'm going to start whittling with my swiss army knife and we'll see where it goes :)
