we had one same year and same color for about 18 years in our family. my father bought it as a dealer demo from a Dallas based acura dealership. it was my sisters first car, my first car and my brothers first car. it recently got totaled and it felt awful when we went to the tow yard to empty it out. seeing on this channel just flooded in memories and a tiny tear. thanks wizard, im excited to watch future videos on this!

@@JDMHaze honestly I was sold on that idea too without being able to verify it personally. Until one of my relatives got a 2003 mdx with the original transmission. It’s now at 250000+ miles with just regular maintenance it was around 180000 when they got it. I myself own one now cause I fell in love with the car. Mine is a 2005 with 228000 on the clock and still got the original transmission. So I really can’t tell if the problem is maintenance wise.

Hey Wizard check inside the glovebox/glovebox compartment. I recall Honda would put the radio code in there. Usually on the sides hidden where the blower is. Doesn't hurt to look and change the cabin filter while you're there. The only other option is give your vin to the dealership or stereo S/N to get that code. The Harley is beautiful! Mrs. Wizard would love to take the Harley out too once the weather warms up.

If you need to get the S/N of the radio just press buttons 1 and 6 simultaneously and then turn the radio on. You don't have to pull the radio out to do this as long as your Honda is 2001 or newer.

@murray1575 Yep then he can call an Acura dealer, ask for the parts department and they can look up the radio unlock code based on that serial #. I work for a Honda / Acura dealership (we do both) and get that call 10 times a day

Hey, trying my luck here but I have an 03 mdx with 300k kilometers on it and the all wheel drive doesn't work. The vtm4 light on the dash stays on all the time. Is there any easy way to fix this or I should just forget about it and drive it in 2wheel drives till car is done for? Other than that everything else is working great on the car, just redid the brakes.

The exterior appearance of it before repairs really gives it the winter beater look, I love it. Also that PS line, as a Honda owner of that era, get new o rings for sure. The original ones from the factory harden up quickly and gets air in. Sounds like a Ford PS Pump when they kick they get real bad.

I still can't believe he paid 3k for this. For a mechanic of his caliber how does he not know about the terrible history of the torque converters on these things. I bet when he gets it up to temp the tranny will do some weird things. TQ lockup happens when you drive slowly and it kills the trans prematurely. No fluid filter or maintenance change can save it. Its the tune in the computer that is required to be done so the TQ doesn't self-destruct.

I've seen people buy used X5 for that price and more, I'd trust the MDX more. I had a 2004 acura tl, those transmissions are terrible and are known for going out and being jerky, mine went out twice lol. I babied it when i had it rebuilt, it still went out on me. I regret not getting a manual transmission for that car, I would've loved it otherwise

My mix door is making noise. It's pretty easy to get to. It only makes noise when it's hot out as it was a TX car. It never gets cold there so the heater side works fine.

I bought a 2005 MDX about 3 years ago for 3500. It only had 115,000 miles on it. The paint is doing the same thing but it's had the sun and heat of AZ to help it along. The headlights are my biggest problem. Tried buffing them out and still dim. Trying not to have to replace the lenses due to funds. Just had to replace the alt/battery, ac compressor and brakes. But runs like a champ. Good in the sand as well as the snow. Gas mileage sucks but new plugs and injectors are next on my list. Have fun with both of your new rides. Love the paint job on the bike, sweet ride. 👍

Triangle is a Chinese tire brand. I have a set on my 2015 Mustang GT only because they came on the rims that I bought used from someone to have a set of winter and summer tires. They had good tread on them, practically brand new. They are really good in the dry. Actually have lots of grip. In the wet, dial it back some quite a bit.

Definitely check the glove box. Some of those had the code on the BACK of the radio chassis or the underside. The most important thing is the transmission. If its healthy, you are in great shape. They usually go around 250K. Good deal for what the Wizard needs it for.

One common issue with these is transmission fluid and coolant mixing due to a rusted out line at the bottom of the radiator. I’m sure there’s plenty of these documented but fixing it before it fails is definitely worth the money. It happened to my parents Pilot and they got lucky since it was in their driveway when it failed. If they’d been driving, they would’ve needed a new transmission.

The transmissions are common failures for these MDXs and they also tend to have parasitic draws on them. I’ll look forward to you doing those repairs If they pop up on your MDX!

I have that EXACT Acura same color and same paint peel on the front. Mine has 200k on. Houston TX car. Immaculate underneath. I changed the rear catalytic converter ant the bolts came right off. The transmissions can be a problem. I put a transmission cooler on as they run really hot. Also there are finger screens on the shift solenoid's that can plug up and make it shift erratically. They are easily accessible on the outer case. These need good Honda transmission fluid and they need it changed often. This car played yoeman duty pulled behind my diesel pusher rv for many years. Great vehicle you'll love it.

Got 05 MDX... so reliable, hardly need anything other than regular service. Fun fact... even 2022 MDX has similar fuel mileage... no major economy improvment... I guess something to do with aerodynamic. Be sure to install transmission cooler and upgrade the power steering cooler while you are at it (usually upgraded with towing package by dealer).

I'm sooo glad you got one of these! I picked up an '06 MDX in TX for the same price (but mine had 217000mi)... Needless to say, it needs a ton of work... tires, brakes, suspension, catalytic converter... But it's not so complicated I can't work on it/figure out what's broken and the engine is solid! Can't wait to learn from the Wizard! As to the missing code, open the glove box; the code should be on the left side on a sticker on the trim.

Brother, I would check that timing belt for power steering fluid… guaranteed you will need to replace that belt if it got saturated with Power Steering Fluid. Secondly, oil from the flywheel cover indicates a Rear Main Seal leak!

It’s just a fairly common thing you will find with Hondas. Not sure if the dealers were the ones to put the sticker in these places I listed but I worked in the car audio industry for about 10 years and many times I would find the code that way. If you can’t find the code in the car then yes you will need to give a dealer the radio serial number and if they are nice they will give you the code.

My parents had the exact same car, BUT the rear AC quit, all of the adjuster tabs on the air vents broke, the right passenger seat heater died, the engine pinged on premium, and the car had more vague steering than a 1970 Ford LTD! So, after suffering 5 years and 60,000 miles they gladly traded it in on a 2003 Prius which they kept a trouble-free 8 years longer. I notice that you have some of the same issues.

I recently had the occasion to look one over, out of curiosity, of the same year model but it was a "dove gray" color. That particular vehicle had almost 200,000 miles on it but had been garage kept by its original owner and dealer serviced only. Sale price? $12,500.00 FIRM! You stole your truck! The used pickup/SUV market is out of control here in the Southeast with a decent "beater" often selling for almost new, for any given model year, prices. Thankfully The Lovely Bride and I purchased the '05 Chevy Colorado Z71 4X4 crew cab, 3.5L 5cyl, LS that I utilize for hunting and fishing trips before the market went totally fool!

I just bought a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer with 154k miles.for 600$. All its needed was a battery and a power steering line. Paint is 100%. No dents and the interior is spotless. Never been smoked in.

I love the car Wizard! The economic climate is so intimidating that even my cheap purchase of an audi a4 for 4k was better alternative than purchasing from dealers. I put 5k in it to get it up to specs it was still cheaper than going to the dealer. I am a gear head though and don't recommend it if you are going to dealers or European shops. I also watch plenty of DIY videos as well! The only thing I bought from Audi was a dip stick for 50 bucks. Went to Audi just to see how much they would charge for their fluid services and they range from 1600 dollars and up. They call them service packages and honestly dont even trust them to do the work. I think all the work I did to it would be upwards to 10 to 15k to get remarkable performance. Keep up the good work Car wizard love your videos! ❤

Some years back I took my '91 Fatboy to a show/swap meet. I met a guy who worked at the Harley custom shop and built the original '90 Grey Ghost. It was supposed to be a one year only build. I just bought a 05' MDX for $4k a month ago with absolutely nothing wrong with it besides needing an oil change. It does have over 200k miles but runs and drives perfectly. The AWD (VTM-4) will get you out of any situation. You'll like your new ride Wizard.

Triangle started with transport tires. They are a Chinese brand. They moved into passenger cars a few years ago too. They are cheap tires but half decent. Every year I put a set of cheap snows on my car so I have a new set every year. This year using Haida and they are fantastic for cheap tires. Tons of traction and don't get stuck in even 10" deep snow like we've had a couple times here in Ontario this year.

I'd buy it for 3k. That is the transmission and transfer case that made it into the 06-08 Pilot and 06 and up Ridgeline. Not as bad as the 03-05 Pilot or Odyssey. As long as you do drain and fill of transmission and VTM every 30k, they'll last. 143k on the clock, plenty of life in that thing. Likely replace sway bar end links, and compliance bushings are probably toast if it is chewing up tires. Oil pan leaking on that side is rare, usually it is the oil pump leaking on the other side, which usually happens around 200k.

I purchased my 03 MDX with a blown trans at 165k from my customer , 2300 to rebuild trans , now have 212k miles and have replaced control arms droplinks Kyb struts shocks pads front and rear twice, tires twice, evap repair was difficult to diagnose as it has two ! canisters and two vent valves and two purge valves one of the most complicated evap syestems youl ever diagnose.It gets 24-28 mpg highway, be sure to check timing belt and motor mounts every! 90k.

The heat some mdx cars have dual fans if one fan fails the other stays working how you tell is easy crank on the heat full blast with the fan on if your fan blows full throttle right away the 2nd fan isn't working because the 2nd fan usually has a regulator that controls voltage to the second fan hince the jet engine sound when it fails no big problem and usually isn't worth fixing unless you want a challenge

@@arrgorndenethor Premature Clutch lockup from the TQ will self destruct it. No fluid filter change can save it only a good tuner who can make the TQ not lockup early. It may reduce your mpg but atleast you wont slip all the time.

At the 8 minute mark it's mentioned that it has a navigation system. If that's the case you might notice the clock will be running 1 hour fast, and there's nothing you can do, it's a bug that supposedly will fix itself in August. Something about not having enough memory so on January 1, 2022 everything Honda/Acura with a navigation system from around 2003 to 2012 moved 1 hour ahead.

never ever had a problem with my ‘04 MDX. been in my family since new and taken well care for. only had a few issues. -power steering pump failed (replaced) -developed rough idle, fixed by cleaning MAF sensor -ac/heat blower fan makes the worst sound ever if you turn it up past the 2nd or 3rd position -rear suspension sucks 183,300 miles on it as of today. strong engine strong transmission and extremely reliable.

Recommend (once the car is warm), you floor it from a slow roll (10-15 mph) and see if the trans slips. 1st gear sprag clutch was a common issue on these and will manifest itself by the car kicking down into first and the revs going to the moon with no increase in vehicle speed.

I had a 2009 that lasted 269k miles and a car crash is what actually got it off the roads. I loved that 3.7 VTec engine. It got replaced with her cousin a 2016 Pilot, I still miss the Acura, it was a very nice and fun SUV to drive, and that pick up acceleration... 😢 I miss it

you've got a pretty decent example of old reliable Honda. There was one major issue, only one, but very annoying - transmission. But I believe that all of them were repaired already, and additional cooler should be installed by now on all remaining MDXes.

Be sure to check for rust where the rear subframe bolts to the unibody. It's a common problem, most prevalent on the drivers side. Affects all 1st generation MDXs (01-06) and Pilots (03-08) that have been subjected to salty winters.

At 11:20 time stamp, wizard points to rear A/C lines. The steel clamp 5 inches forward where the lines go inside to the rear evaporator rusted and swelled, piercing the line, causing a R134 leak on my 2005. Change that clamp!

I love seeing how used cheap car prices are back in the US. It's so refreshing to see cars like this at this price as compared to seeing late 80s Isuzu Troopers everywhere for 6,000 USD here in South America and they all have abour 400,000 kilometers, not sure about that in miles. I think CRVs from this time period go for about 11,000 USD where I live. At least there's cheap little Daewoo cars you can buy used and cheap Ladas.

MDX is decent, the transmission had issues. Radio you might want to try holding the power button in for a few minutes

Currently driving an 03 with 196k on it. Did a strut/shock replacement and a full bushing update .Biggest improvement was a 3x3 trans flush ( $46 for fluids, $75 for my mechanic to do the labor). added Lucas on final pass. drives like new. Great vehicle!

I have about 230,000 on my 2007 RDX. I snapped a CV joint but otherwise just scheduled maintenance. My son took it to college in Colorado mountains. A set of snow tires makes it a beast in the snow. He loves it. The stock sound system is really nice too. I broke the beauty cover on the engine so I just left it out. Unfortunately he slid sideways into a pole trying to avoid a deer. He was ready to scrap it but I told him to act like a broke college student. A sledge hammer to the fender got I off the tire. He had to tape the rear window and door permanently shut. Now he loves it even more because he isn't afraid of damaging it

Crazy in sweden too, used car prices are up 20-40% in one year alone. There's barely any good used vehicles for a reasonable price anymore, the used car dealers are fighting over them. Car dealers either say you can get their demo vehicle for 0% off or wait one year for your new car.

Had a 2006 MDX myself. Great car in the winter, but had an issue with the heating. Heater core flushed, changed radiator, blend door actuators, thermostat, heater control valve just to name a few, couldn't get good heat. It was time to sell it. Just bypass the radiator and run a standalone trans cooler. Also, remove the Bluetooth module, they are known for being the source of parasitic draw.

Hi car wizard i work in a Acura dealership, if you still continue to have oil leaks, the most common oil leak on these mdxs is from the oil pump but it would only need a reseal so it would be up to you to replace the whole pump but in reality it would just need a reseal but also, if you need the radio code I can look it up by having your vin number and the serial number of your radio but usually they have the code on the side of the glove box

Check the cam chain tensioners on your Fat Boy. The early twin cam engines had spring tensioners and they need to be checked at 20k. When they break the broken parts clog up the oil return and often cause major engine damage.

Have a 2004 MDX, brought it new...and now have 247k miles on it. Have replaced the timing belt 2x and the front tie rods etc..in the last few weeks...still runs like a top...save a few dings and scratches.

@Car Wizard a lot of the times there is a sticker or label on the inside of the glove box that has the stereo code you need. A lot of the times when you open the glove compartment it’s on the left on the side.

I bought the 05 oddysey for 3k with 190k, made it to 270k, cost me brakes, ac compressor, 2 sets tires, radiator, cv axles, power steering pump, alternator, starter. Never fixed the catylitic converters because it was 1600. Probably all in all 6500 in it for 70,000 miles, stranded on the road a few times and some added problems on some trips. The motor was impressive how new it felt power wise up until the end.

You can avoid having to reset the computer system at battery change with jumpers connected to another power source to keep the system lit. It obviously won't draw extra power unless a short is present in the system before the fuses.

Pry the center stack bezel off with a trim remover (all held by clips) and remove the bracket around the radio/screen (4 Philips screws) and you can read the radio serial number from looking top down. Then just google "Acura radio code" and go to the official Acura radio code site and enter the required info. Takes less than ten minutes.

I have a 2004 Acura MDX. 210,000 miles. It's a front wheel drive car. I live in Seattle and took my family skiing every weekend, no issues (good tires needed). We would go skiing in Whistler and the road there was always snow packed. This car is 18 years old and my son uses it at college. What a great car it has been for us. Smooth ride and great comfort. Long road trips to South Dakota every other year. I bought this car in 2006 with 21,000K. My wife wanted a Cadillac Escalade. I told her I would rather walk than that junk on wheels!

The 2003 Acura MDX was a great purchase from the Car Wizard. He needed a vehicle to get through the rest of winter and I think that he will keep it for a while. The newer MDX's are very expensive and they have numerous amount of problems, compared to the older ones. Anyway, I am hoping that the Car Wizard will do a buy this, not that video for Subaru, Mazda or Mitsubishi sooner or later.

I had a 2003 Acura MDX back in the day. Same color too; I thought it might be mine! (but slight trim differences) Wizard mentioned the navigation system. Despite the large screen, there is no navigation included. Infotainment systems started around 2010. You can get the code from manufacturer if you have the VIN and serial #; that you can find by taking out the radio. Greta video, cannot wait to see Wizard ride the Harley!

Recently bought myself an 02 Impala LS with the 3800 Series and 86,000 miles for $3,000. Had to replace the torque mounts which was cheap, but otherwise everything works great including the heated seats!
