I sold these cars and it seemed there were 2 types of SVX’s. The ones that were reliable and durable and, well, the ones that gave you ulcers. They really stood out in a lot of new Subaru’s and that probably worked against them as much as it helped them. I think they were just too advanced and different for what most customers thought a Subaru was. I remember they were very comfortable, very quiet (especially with the windows down), and in bad weather they were like a billy goat, nowhere they couldn’t go. A very unique car for its time.

the SVX's 4eat automatic trans was the strongest version ever made of that design, they aren't that weak, the only ones failing are the ones who didn't respond to the torque converter recall, the 91-93 tourqe converter had problems, they disintegraded bit by bit and clogged up the high pressure lines feeding the rest of the transmission.

It's a great honor that the SVX would get its own spot on the Wizard's channel. I'm big in Subaru communities both in NY and Canada and there's always one or two of these things at meets. The community is fascinated by them. And I'm sure Subaru would make money if they introduced something similar today. But not if it's as expensive as it was back then. The communities only complaint is the auto only. The 4EAT trans has many quirks and requires perfect owners to live a long life. And it wasn't ready for the torque of this car. A 5 speed would've been incredible. Edit: About the driveshaft. I had a bad u-joint and carrier bearing on an 05 outback. 90% of the shops i contacted said it either can't be fixed or we'll give it a shot and leave you with a bill if it fails. Ended up taking it to a Subaru dealer and spent 1 grand on an entire 2 piece drive shaft because the shaft is welded after the carrier is installed and the u-joints aren't replaceable. The cost was increased by the fact that it was an Outback Sedan. Pretty rare, even here in the Northeast US. Took a week just to get the parts shipped. By comparison, my 96 Impreza had a clutch pack burn out in the trans and for the same cost and one afternoon it was torn apart and ready to go.

I got rid of it quickly and replaced it with a 1991 MR2 Turbo. That was a good choice. The SVX was a great car, a bit heavy, very comfortable inside, it ate up highway miles. I love the way these cars look. I have never seen a manually swapped SVX. If I find one for sale I may seriously consider buying it.
I have replaced a few staked in U joint's on my Subaru's. There are aftermarket replacement u-Joints which use circlips on the inside of the yoke to stay in place, and pressing or drilling out of the stakes is required, a simple process. Subaru uses the same size U-Joint as the older Toyota Highlander's, Lexus RX300 and a number of other Japanese automobiles because all these driveshafts came from a common supplier. And these SVX eat wheel bearings, its a heavy car and the bearings are undersized for the car as they are from the lighter, lower HP Legacy model. Also the variable torque distribution AWD system this uses does stress the bearings a bit more than Subaru's other AWD systems, it sends more power to the rear wheels than the typical Subaru AWD system. The wheel bearings, being press in, need great care to install them so the don't shortly fail again.

Wheel bearing noise comes from not grounding front struts to main body of the car. Difference of ground causes wheel bearings to wear sooner. After replace bad wheel bearing you need to install ground strap from front struts to body of the car. Since front struts are isolated with rubber cushions to stop the road vibration to the car. I replace my front wheel bearing three times and with ground strap added I do not have bearing problem anymore. Also transmission goes out every 75K miles.

This model was rarely seen new on a Subaru dealer's lot as they were such a departure from the rest of the Subaru line. In many ways, they were a special order from Subaru. The reason for only a portion of the side windows rolling down is the curvature in the glass. For the entire window to lower would require a much thicker door. For the time they were a very fast car with a top speed in excess of 160 mph.

The SVX was designed as an homage to the DeLorean DMC-12, as it was designed by the same engineer for Subaru, and was the flagship car for the new rounded off designs for that year. I had a Pearl White 2/91 just like the one in the video. This is a 92' as it has no airbag on the passenger side and the rear covers and the trunk lid are black with no spoiler. I had a 2/91, right in the beginning of production car. The AWD versions had the 4EAT transmission from the Nissan Pathfinder in them, which was there curse as they always broke from the heat. My front and rear had 1 extra tooth from all other years making it hard to do a proper tranny rebuild. It was a short production car in the 5 years it was out and was prone to rust in the rear wheel wells, rear wheel bearings going bad ( the car is 4200lbs ) and ate tires. It was, at the time, the most expensive and heaviest Subaru produced and was meant to be a challenger to the Nissan 300Z.

That's a sweet looking Subaru! I own a 1993 Subaru Legacy sedan (154K miles) that runs great but it is an "unpopular" spec; it's *front wheel drive with an automatic (4EAT).* AFAIK, it is the only one in my city; never seen another one. My Legacy also has automatic shoulder belts that work... too well. They're strong enough to choke you if you're not sitting back when you close the door.🤣

Did anyone notice the left and right wheels have a rotation direction? In 24 years I never had to replace a wheel bearing, let alone a drive shaft. Wheel bearing like nose can also come from the tires.

The solution to the silly universal joint problem can be found in a recycling yard under a Toyota or Daihatsu or Nissan. Actually you just use a diagrinder to remove the locking lugs press out the ujoints and fit ones that use a C clip on the cup inside the joint instead of outside . You may need to file or machine the lobes on the shaft flat so the C clip has a good contact surface that won’t push the clip off in one spot.

My Uncle had one of these for a good while; 10 years or so, maybe a bit more. I want to say it was a '96 or '97 model -- one of the later ones, definitely. Fun, sporty little car. This one is in fantastic shape, considering it's a '92 model -- really well cared for, obviously.

Have loved these since I first saw one as a teen. Part of my dream garage.
