The fact that those brakes have scored the rotors to the point of being metal-to-metal tells you that this PD really doesn't have a good maintenance budget/schedule. The other clue is that the battery is original (6 years old) and is to the point of failure. Being in police service would tend to put hard miles on the suspension (how long had that clunking noise been present?). That previous oil change must have been done at Jiffy Lube! Whoever is in charge of vehicle maintenance needs a refresher in getting proper maintenance scheduled. The Car Wizard should put together a bid to be the go-to shop for city vehicle repairs.

I would not dismiss that exhaust leak as not worth addressing. On a normal car sure but this car spends 95% of it's time idling in one spot so even a tiny exhaust leak can build up enough CO to be harmful, especially when the officer it tucked out of the way in a hiding spot where the wind might also be blocked. I'd ask the officers who use this if they ever get headaches when sitting around in the car they simply chalk up to having a bad day. My bet is that leak is the culprit Edit: I'd also think a department would have an semi-annual brake job built into the car's annual operating budget so hopefully this is a no brainer choice for them

I got a '13 pursuit at the TX highway patrol auction for my daughter, sight unseen. It did have a bad middle drive shaft bearing initially and later on I did have some control arms replaced. Other than that, its been pretty good. It does differ from a regular RT. It has a bigger radiator for long idling, bigger brakes, a more rugged 5 speed auto instead of the RT's 8 speed and an open diff.. The center console is steel. I was not a fan of dodge, but my daughter wanted to be a police officer and this was a way to get her "into" cars. It is a surprisingly good "family sedan" that happens to go fast. Its quiet, agile, very well mannered. I'd buy one new now. I'm told the chassis is similar to the Mercedes E class. We got it with 160k. It has 195k or so now. Doesn't smoke. Starts every time. No fuss at all.

My dad had a shop where he also serviced city cruisers. It isn’t the miles that’s the problem on these vehicles, it’s the idle time, or in other words, the amount of time they sit still with the car running. He said that most of the police officers are not trained to step on the gas once every couple of minutes and rev the engine up a little so that the oil pressure goes up in order to get oil to the top side of the engine. As a result, the engines go through a ton of and wear even though they’re not moving at all. Yes, when they are moving, they’re being driven most of the time like race cars or like four-wheel-drive vehicles. But the bulk of the problem is the amount of time the car sits running in a low idle.

Detective's cars from all over the country. We had a blast playing cops and robbers on the parking lot until one fella returns his car for the night and says "Hey bud. Listen. Any time these lights are activated, it sends video back to the precinct. Fooling around is fun and all, I get it. But just keep that in mind." It put all of our shenanigans to a screeching halt. That's why most departments opt for V6 Dodge's, instead of the V8's. Less powerful, but more reliable. Like they say, you can't outrun a Motorola. Not hating on Dodge, but even their police interceptors have bad quality control problems. This one was made before 2020, so it's not as bad. Ford and Chevy make the better pursuit vehicles. Best ones being the Explorer, and Tahoe. More space, and decent power. Nothing will come close to the Crown Vic's reliability though. Some Crown Vics did have weak transmissions, but it would still find a way to take you from point a to b.

Halstead's Dodge dealership is apparently no better than my local dealership. They wanted, $!,000 + fees and taxes to do the shocks on my Jeep Rubicon. (I spent less than $300 for OEM shocks and 1.5 hours of my time with a floor jack.) $440 for rear brakes. ($55 for ceramic and 1/2 hour of my time with a floor jack.) $440 for differential gear oil swap. (It had just been done and they claimed it was black with metal shavings in it. Not true.) Every time they touch one of my vehicles they try to scam me with something, ie "Required AC filter replacement, $75". Get out! "Your Jeep Wave oil change is not really free, it's $98." Pound sand! I'm betting all the dealerships are now doing crap like this. Good on the PD for checking elsewhere.

Well, the first problem is that its a Dodge. The Indiana State Police are having issues with the Durango pursuit vehicles they bought. Almost a third of the 200+ they bought are out of service. There's a reason that most police departments use, or are switching to, Ford PPV Explorers or, as I've seen out west, the Chevy Tahoe. Our 2020 5.7 Awd had 187,000 hard highway miles before it was canned for mileage. Engine never gave us an issue. Trans was replaced at 120K. Front axles replaced probably 3 times each side which is super common on highway cars (pulling into/out of U turns). Keep in mind the highway cars probably go from 0-100-0 multiple times a day for enforcement and responding to calls. Really impressive how much stress the 5.7s took without complaint. 2021 and newer AWD chargers are V6s which is why we kept the V8 as long as possible.

These things with the 5.7 are wicked fast for cop cars. 150 MPH speed limited, but without it it'll do 165 easy. Still a little slower than the civilian cars with their limiters removed, those will do about 170 due to lower ride height and shorter gearing courtesy of having three more forward ratios than the cop cars.

Many urban police departments are moving to Tesla Model 3's now because of the high cost and frequent maintenance on the Dodges. The Model 3's are much quicker, police say their driving shifts are only about 100mi, the Tesla's Brembo brakes last 3-4 times as long due to regen, and there is zero powertrain maintenance. Battery longevity is not a concern because police departments generally swap out cars every 100k miles anyway.

You'd think that Tesla might take a gamble on setting up a line for an interceptor model with a tougher interior, beefed up suspension, and maybe a little extra ground clearance, etc. They'd have to do some marketing and hands-on demos to win over departments, though. The maintenance cost is absolutely killer on those when something goes wrong, since Tesla has almost a complete monopoly on parts. If Tesla changed their business model for government vehicles, they'd probably do alright.

Some require approval for each item, some require approval beyond a certain dollar amount, others will keep a boneyard and supply parts for repair off previously totaled vehicles, and even if municipalities use the same upfitter, there are stark differences in configuration and documentation.

Depends on the locale, the integrity of the department, etc. Most of the time, I think it makes a whole lot of sense to be stealthy, especially when the officers have to constantly be looking over their shoulders. If you want to catch bad guys, it's better not to stand out, and we all count on law enforcement to keep things peaceful and safe. When we all speed, we know the risks, and we should accept them. That said, there are some locales and departments who are absolutely brutal, camping out where a speed limit goes from 55 to 25 or something ridiculous. When I'm traveling out of state, I'm always extra cautious because my out of state plates make me a target. I fought a ticket once, when a 25 MPH sign was deliberately obscured by a pine tree. The judge dismissed the ticket.
