The fact that those brakes have scored the rotors to the point of being metal-to-metal tells you that this PD really doesn't have a good maintenance budget/schedule. The other clue is that the battery is original (6 years old) and is to the point of failure. Being in police service would tend to put hard miles on the suspension (how long had that clunking noise been present?). That previous oil change must have been done at Jiffy Lube! Whoever is in charge of vehicle maintenance needs a refresher in getting proper maintenance scheduled. The Car Wizard should put together a bid to be the go-to shop for city vehicle repairs.

I would not dismiss that exhaust leak as not worth addressing. On a normal car sure but this car spends 95% of it's time idling in one spot so even a tiny exhaust leak can build up enough CO to be harmful, especially when the officer it tucked out of the way in a hiding spot where the wind might also be blocked. I'd ask the officers who use this if they ever get headaches when sitting around in the car they simply chalk up to having a bad day. My bet is that leak is the culprit Edit: I'd also think a department would have an semi-annual brake job built into the car's annual operating budget so hopefully this is a no brainer choice for them

I got a '13 pursuit at the TX highway patrol auction for my daughter, sight unseen. It did have a bad middle drive shaft bearing initially and later on I did have some control arms replaced. Other than that, its been pretty good. It does differ from a regular RT. It has a bigger radiator for long idling, bigger brakes, a more rugged 5 speed auto instead of the RT's 8 speed and an open diff.. The center console is steel. I was not a fan of dodge, but my daughter wanted to be a police officer and this was a way to get her "into" cars. It is a surprisingly good "family sedan" that happens to go fast. Its quiet, agile, very well mannered. I'd buy one new now. I'm told the chassis is similar to the Mercedes E class. We got it with 160k. It has 195k or so now. Doesn't smoke. Starts every time. My dad had a shop where he also serviced city cruisers. It isn’t the miles that’s the problem on these vehicles, it’s the idle time, or in other words, the amount of time they sit still with the car running. He said that most of the police officers are not trained to step on the gas once every couple of minutes and rev the engine up a little so that the oil pressure goes up in order to get oil to the top side of the engine. As a result, the engines go through a ton of and wear even though they’re not moving at all. Yes, when they are moving, they’re being driven most of the time like race cars or like four-wheel-drive vehicles. But the bulk of the problem is the amount of time the car sits running in a low idle.

The Model 3's are much quicker, police say their driving shifts are only about 100mi, the Tesla's Brembo brakes last 3-4 times as long due to regen, and there is zero powertrain maintenance. And an adequate maintenance record would show who exactly screwed the pooch with that oil filter. Sure, don't spend 4 grand for those repairs. Lets spend 40k for a replacement cruiser. Now THAT's government spending.

It astounds me that NOBODY on KZbin can say “anyway” any more. It’s always “anyways” now, which until maybe three years ago I heard very rarely as a sort of extremely lame jocular variation on “anyway.” Now (at least on KZbin videos) “anyways” is normal and “anyway” very rare. There’s probably a scholarly paper in studying this change.

If you're obeying the law, you don't need to worry about what color the police car is. Sneaky police cars are good because they make sure you're behaving when you think no one's watching. That town is a notorious ticket trap but I've never had an issue there because I always obey traffic laws.

Depends on the locale, the integrity of the department, etc. Most of the time, I think it makes a whole lot of sense to be stealthy, especially when the officers have to constantly be looking over their shoulders. If you want to catch bad guys, it's better not to stand out, and we all count on law enforcement to keep things peaceful and safe. When we all speed, we know the risks, and we should accept them. That said, there are some locales and departments who are absolutely brutal, camping out where a speed limit goes from 55 to 25 or something ridiculous. When I'm traveling out of state, I'm always extra cautious because my out of state plates make me a target. I fought a ticket once, when a 25 MPH sign was deliberately obscured by a pine tree. The judge dismissed the ticket.

The police cars used in the city I live in are very well maintained. Each vehicle gets about $15k to $20k worth of maintenance and repairs throughout it's service life. This department was just negligent or there could be budget issues too. That exhaust leak shouldn't be ignored especially on a car that's idled a lot during an officer's shift.
@williamwhite97672 ай бұрын
All of those repairs are normal repairs. It would be foolish to replace it. But, taxpayer money is free so they might replace it.
@Dave-in-MD2 ай бұрын
Ah, another expert. It all depends on the remaining life left in the vehicle. Many departments sell cars at certain milage or years so that they can recoup the resale value. There is quite a bit of science on when to sell a car and when you need to stop putting money into it. But hey, you obviously know best.
@williamwhite97672 ай бұрын
@@Dave-in-MD Yeah, it's cheaper to trade every 60,000 miles. You're correct. NOT A long time ago when I was looking at buying one at the auction, the NC highway patrol got rid of their cars at 60,000 miles. But, I don't think it was a financial decision but was to keep the patrolmen in a safer car.

Notice the speedometer says certified on it? It is because they read exactly what the speed is our civilian models are actually off a couple mph. Some people do not know this so now you do:P Next time you go buy one of those portable radars that show your speed you will see your speed is 1-2 mph slower than what it says. Our Police dept. near me misses the old Ford Crown Vics. They say the Chargers have been very expensive over the lifetime of the cars. The old Crown Vic Police interceptors were way more reliable and lasted longer. That being said the Ford Explorers have been more costly than the Chargers. They need to buy Toyota Police vehicles and would save Tax Payers a ton of money! (I know being Government agencies they only buy American brands just sayin' Toyotas would last longer). That paper towel roll on the bungies is a great idea going to do that with my wife's car. LOL
@user-pgchargerse712 ай бұрын
No Toyota sedan or SUV has the performance of a Charger or Ecoboost Explorer. And I would want my tax money going to US brands.
@JasPlun2 ай бұрын
@@user-pgchargerse71 Toyota in most cases has more US in them than domestic brands and assembled in America that argument no longer holds true. The Arkadelphia Police Department replaced some of their Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor models with Toyota Camry Hybrids to reduce costs and environmental impact. The Camry Hybrid has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that produces 200 horsepower. It can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 7.7 the Charger 0-60 is 1-2 secs faster at 5.8-6.4 secs so no its not that much faster. They use some Tundra trucks at Houston Police Dept, and North Carolina is buying Toyotas so yes they make fine Police vehicles and are about 40 grand less in purchase price, so it saves Tax payers a huge sum of money. They also save in fuel and repair costs and the Police Departments using them will tell you it has not impacted their work except saving tax dollars.
